This site is addictive.. (goodbye eBay!) I ordered these cuts privately for Trent dj’s who each paid for their own cut.
As they all had the same vocal group on, we found that we could edit some endings (Kenny’s ‘Radio Trent stereo’) to other names so it multiplied up.
It therefore rather dominated the actual station package. This was produced by Johnny Arthey (producer of Eloise for Barry Ryan*) which I recall was ‘All you need…’ On that EVERY cut sounded like ABBA and nearly all had a thick instrumentla sound that did not ‘flow’ in to most records!
The vocalists on ‘All you need’ included Vicki Bown** and several studio singers who had been in First Class***
The 5 JAM cuts (and many variations) were on-air at least 9 years before we were officially allowed (MU regs) to use JAM !! No one said a word… They STILL sound great in 2004!
My cut was from WJJD Chicago, and the Mark Williams cut, ‘Music is the Sunshine ~ the Mark William’s Showwww’ **** was still being used by him in the West Midlands at least 12 years later!
* Marion Ryan’s son….
** Joe Brown’s late wife+
*** ‘Beach Baby’ / ‘ Bobby Dazzler’ 1974
**** Originally ‘It’s a Music Summmmer ~ on WABcccccc’
+ Sam Browns’ motherDont you just LOVE footnotes!

When Trent were getting jingles from Alfasound, it was great fun for anoraks spotting some of the influences on the cuts. I seem to recall one cut that strongly echoed a WBT “Simple and Free” jingle and a traffic or weather bed that was just like Cagney and Lacey. Now that’s what I call variety!

Well spotted! Chris Kershaw wrote and produced SAF, and the vocals / transistions / ‘fresh sound’ STILL make it one of my favourite packages. It’s really PAMS made at WBT?! Is that package known my most Anoraks today?
‘Sittin’ on the sand, with no one to hold my hand, but the Spirit of old Cape Cod keeps me company oooh Yeah… Simple & Free, WCOD’.
The Cagney and Lacey theme DID inspire the traffic bed, we had full orchestration on that. It was INCREDIBLE to watch it build in Alan Fawke’s hands ~ LOVE the tymps on it… Alfasound’s tracks were in my mind often as good as the American ones, it was just the vocal sound it was impossible to capture here, until we flew in Jackie Dixon!
The longest ‘copy/original I can recall was a ‘Three W E Eleven Hundred’ (WWWE) PAMS cut that went through being ‘261 the North East Sound, in 1974, ‘257 Radio Orwell’ was then replayed for Orwell by Emison in 1976, was then ‘Radio Trent Remembers’ by Alfasound in 1980, and we returned in 1989 to the original PAMS track for ‘GEM AM the Great East Midlands’.
Have you noticed that Saga here now refer to the area as ‘The Great East Midlands’ ??
Everythng old is new again…. !
Best wishes

Its very old – its a classic its greatAugust 13, 2004 at 12:09 pm #13783ratnobMemberAha – hadn’t realised that Chris Kershaw was involved with Simple & Free. That explains the great vocals. It remains one of my favourite packages.

I managed to get several long chats with CK at JAM… he’s totally modest, and totally talented.
He created SAF from the ground up… simple clean tracks, carried by great vocals, ideas.
Chris also did a LOT on Solid Rock 1 and 2…. Metro had cuts from both incl. the song ~ ‘Solid Rock in Seattle .. its the one thing goin’ on’….
I also was the first or second client to buy the SENSATIONAL WCBS FM ‘Do it again’ package. On holiday in NYC I heard it on air one week, it was sung in front of me 7 days later. Got extra budget to add it to an already specified package.
Surely it has THE best weather & namecheck cuts ever….? Chris was behind the rather unusual vocal sound on it, and some of the best tracks were written by the late Bob Piper (his last work I believe?)

August 15, 2004 at 8:23 pm #13793ratnobMemberI love Chris Kershaw’s writing. His country package when WAPE “went country” was great and I especially love the KNBR “Sounds Like” collection, full of long and medium songs. To me, huddled in a bleak Midlands town, it felt like the sound of California. Great stuff. Same with Simple & Free – the only WBT package I didn’t feel a teeny bit embarrassed about having.
August 15, 2004 at 9:02 pm #13794TServo2049Wait, that WAPE thing was Chris Kershaw? I always thought it was Tuesday…but I guess I was wrong…
August 15, 2004 at 9:31 pm #13795ratnobMemberYep, Chris Kershaw. Guaranteed.
