I had the day off work today and popped Hallam FM on in the morning; to be honnest I haven’t listened to Hallam in ages! I don’t know if anyone else out there has heard, but some of the imaging used on “Michelle’s School Years” show features retro Hallam FM JAM jingles!

For instance, this morning the “School Year” in question was 1996, so one of the idents I heard featured a sample of a cut from the 1995 “Metroline” package. The liner used on the ident in question says “When we used to sound like this”, then the jingle sample comes in before the liner continues with “and you were listening to this”. The next song is then launched. A few weeks ago whilst listening to the same show I heard an “All Hits All Day” cut from the 1991 JAM package. I will have to listen again for when the featured year is 1997 or 1998 to see if a TM Century cut is used. Unfortunately though, I don’t think they go back into the 70’s and 80’s with the show!!!

To give you an idea of what Hallam are doing with the “School Years” imaging, here is a short montage I have compiled of the imaging used on the show today:

Nice also to hear some alternate versions of the Reelworld jingles. I notice a lot of the presenters now have their own sings on some of the jingles. Wonder if Reelworld will add them to the site soon?

Northants 96 do something similar as well – I was listening the other morning and they used an old Hot FM jingle during their 9am retro hour feature. Sounded cool!

Would Hallam have to get permission from JAM or whatever to re-use cuts in this way well beyond the end of their leasing Contract period? or maybe just a quick nod from Steve England?

It'll also be interesting if the octagon ones pop up.

I'm sure that they've received permission and have learned after what happened when Jon Wolfert painfully had to tell Chris Moyles to pull the plug a few years ago on R1.

            If they haven't,naughty but nice.

That's great Mark – cheers for sharing. I have so many fond memories of listening to Hallam FM with their JAM jingles through early/mid 1990s.

How nice to hear that Metroline cut again – shame they really didn't go to town and read the weather over the bed that preceeds it :-) ! Bet it's interesting to hear the JAM jingles in contrast to the current Reelword cuts. I sometimes really forget how powerful the JAM stuff sounded on air on UK CHR stations.

Regarding the alternate Reelworld Hallam FM sings appearing on the site. I'd really like to see that happen too. I've always like the “Big drive home” versions.

Thinking about it though, Key 103 have had many alternate sings from the start (Toolan in Morning, Top Ten at Ten, Key to Manc's Weekend) and sadlly none of those have ever appeared on the site. Such a shame, as to me it demostrates how flexible the package can be and how lyrics can potentially be re-sung differently for prospective syndication clients.

Yes – it would be nice to hear the Hallam FM 1997 TM Century Package again. And, of course those rather odd jingles that came after that, that sang all the frequencies and TBM strapline! Are they the Octagon cuts that freq-ky mentions?

Here it is…for what it's worth

http://www.mediamax.com/davetheblade/Hosted/8sidestoHallam.mp3 – *Please note dead link – will try and find file and will try to repost!*

As you can hear, the stuff for Hallam (with the exception of the News cut) felt a little bit of place with the music they were playing but according to one ex Hallam DJ,was made to sound different to what they'd had before based on the remit of the PD at the time.

If you go to Octagon's website,it shows that they were responsible for the Key 103 1997 TOTH – one of the great cuts of the 90's. What a shame they couldn't find the ability to stretch to something like that over the Pennines ,because a package like the Key stuff would have been top stuff on Hallam !

                  Those were spectacularly rotten!
I'm sure there are those who will disagree, but would somebody please bring back JAM to UK radio.

Thanks for posting those Octagon cuts Dave. It's the second one that vividly sticks in my memory. In fact, I can remember where I was stood the first time I heard it play out on the 103.4 frequency – almost some 40 miles from Sheffield!

I agree – not really their best stuff really. Although I think I can almost actually hear the start of one of the Key 103 1997 cuts at the start of that first cut. And…. regarding the Key 103 1997 top of the hour – you know I love that one! Absolutely agree, shame the stuff of that calibre did not cross the short distance over the pennines!

Nice Retro Jingles, thanks for posting that Mark. Don't suppose anyone has just the backing music from that School Years one? Always like that backing music, end up humming it…..perhaps I need to up my medication.. !lol

Not quite Hallam FM, but it's neighbouring sister station, Key 103 Manchester, has an excellent hour called “Guilty Secrets”, presented by Nicksy between 18:00 and 19:00 each Saturday afternoon.

Something quite unexpected happened yesterday. Out of ad breaks, Nicksy used Key 103's historic versions of JAM Turbo Z cut 10 and JAM Hyperlink Cut 1 as ramp jingles. Very unusual. and I'm sure a one off. On each occasion he said “Well, that cetainly is a guilty secret, but I'm sure it's made someone happy”! They certainly took me by suprise, but still sounded great on air!

Not sure if he just played them off the cuff, or whether they had been requested (possibly by someone here). It was certainly a nice touch thouugh.

Nicksy filled in for Gary Philipson on the late night zoo on TFM not long beofre he got his Key 103 job. When doing that he refused to use the current TFM I Q Beat Jingles and was playing old jingles instead, news weather etc. brought back the memories. Took me back to the days when he was a proper tfm presenter on weekday afternoons.

i think he likes the old days and old jingles by the sounds of it!

Don't know how Nicksy gets away with it to be honest – agree he must like the old stuff. Didn't think the TFM IQ Beats was too bad myself – although would prefer the JAM or Simrek TFM jingles any day!

I can just about remember 'Simon Nicks' on TFM in the early/mid 90s – possibly around the time when TFM had their JAM Energy jingles. Thinking about it, the 1994 Key 103 JAM package had a few Energy cuts in common with the TFM package, so it would be nice to hear a one off airing of one of the Key103 versions!

I'm sure it is no co-insidence that Nicksy signed up to jinglemad a few days ago – maybe he got the jingles from here?

                                    Come on own up Simon!
