BBC iPlayer so effectively geo-blocking as it will check the home address of login-er to see if UK TV licence holder.

The jingle on Radio Today is S2Blue with JAM’s Spirit of New England cut 10 – the edit they’ve done sounds very clunky,
but as I’ve got that one as a Personal Cut it IS quite a challenging one to digitally edit to shorter versions without a bit of
imagination – and they way they’ve sung the emphasis on the Double-You-Bee-Zee Bost-on logo is a bit odd…

Probably doing what they’ve been asked no doubt but at least it wasn’t a 70s/80s Heaven kind of resing. BBC Somerset were also using some Spirit of New England bed too.

Agreed Len….at first I did kind of struggle to hear what was being sung….shame considering the harmony was good

Len, Ian… when I originally posted above, I’d said much the same as you both, but I TONED-down my comment to:-

as at first I’d not made out the wording properly either, I’d picked up on the “…SETis” mis-emphasis
– but its TWO words Simon! Sometimes “slurring” 2 sylables together CAN work; but ask any Scot about
whats called the “glottal stop” in speech structure!

Its a wee bit …clumsy… to be polite!

To be fair, they’ll probably only be playing them for a short while around the anniversary (surely?…), and
S2Blue are a wee bit cheaper than getting JMW to do them.

By the way, on some past Personal Cuts orders (and not just by JMW, who really WILL be honest about such matters),
I’ve certainly been “steered away” from intended “here’s how I wan’t my wording to fit” the track, or to have a suggested
(and successful) tweak to make things work in better.

In one instance, what I wanted for a classic PAMS non-series cut was so un-singable to JMW’s ears that I cancelled it.
There was no point in me “forcing” the words into the part of the melody/track in the way that was “inside my head”.
Fortunately I came back another day for something different!

I know that its often said “it must be what the client wanted then”, but as has been said on this Forum in the past,
many station PDs (or their modern equivalent) nowadays have no musical or production background and don’t understand
what makes a jingle “tick”, and that’s where the long-experienced minds of jingle people like JMW and his counterparts
“across town” KNOW how to make these “6-second songs” work :^)

Spot on Iain. To be honest though I’ve even heard some TM and JAM jingles in the past sung with lyrics that didn’t match the notes. I remember Jon Wolfert saying on GEM AM that Len was one of the better one’s when it came to having jingles resung

JMW always naturally recommends to “do the phrasing like the demo” basically. Dave Nightingale’s “Donner Kebabs”
version of a Best Show cut is still a damn good example of utterly daft lyrics that are a spot-on “fit”

But nothing wrong with a small tweak or two – I’ve found JAM stuff is often cleverer than is at first obvious
– there’s always a wee bit of headroom e.g. for a half-note in front which can take another syllable, or the
“station name” 3-chord pads (usually at the end of cut) can “carry” all sorts of wording well.
e.g. On the New York 97 cut I linked to on 2 recent threads, I was able to fit in an ” Its A…” into the lyric
at the existing melody – I’m sure “Bee Bee Cee Som-er-set” and “is” at 7 sylables could have been sho’ed-in
to the “WBZ” 5-sylable track a bit more creatively than “70sHeaven” style “slurring”.

Anyway, we’ll probably find that the rest of the material for the anniversary will sound just fine!
