Sorry if I’m late with this but I see that Jam has posted the new DRC NEW DIRECTION DEMO CUT BY CUT.
July 2, 2013 at 12:37 am #90585dianablanton1984Memberhttp://www.jingles.com/jam/radioids/demodl-RightDirection.php
Just saw that tonight…. impressive package!
July 2, 2013 at 3:27 am #90589mjb1124MemberNice to see this package posted, and to see a good old-fashioned demo presentation with some words from the PD. In my opinion, going with JAM is indeed the “Right Direction” for Classic Hits stations. This package builds on the sound of the CBS-FM packages that are still popular, while incorporating the styles from the late 70’s and 80’s songs that stations are now focusing on. It’s evolution, not revolution.
Of course, it’s a bit ironic that JAM would release this package now, since DRC-FM seems to have significantly cut back on jingle usage in the last week or so, while also adding 90’s songs to the playlist . I’m a child of the 90’s, but I still feel like it’s too soon, especially considering how well the station’s been doing recently. And cutting back jingles on a Classic Hits station is never a good thing IMO. But hey, at least Ron Sedaille is still hot-rockin’ with his Z cuts.
Curiously, on the cut-by-cut presentation, cut 13 (my favorite) is the “Another Big D Request” version, while the demo presentation and lyric sheet feature the “Another Saturday Night Request – on Big D!” version. Both have been used on the air – the former during the daily “Drive at Five”, and the later during Ron Sedaille’s mayhem.
July 2, 2013 at 6:08 am #90594MarcMannetjeGreat cuts, great placing of instruments. It seems hard to create a connection between obvious oldies cuts (brass, big voice vocals) and a 80s feel (more electronic instrumentation, sound fxs), but this package does it alright. I saw DRC has a stunning 9% market share, very well done for this format!
July 2, 2013 at 11:51 am #90599LenGroatAgain JAM show that they can pull out ALL the Stops…. everytime! What a greatbrightsharp, vocally clear package!
Cuts 5-10 just SiNg and ZiNg …Superb tracks..
And I love the incisive vocal group sound
These are nearly all shorter than the supposedly ‘modern’ jingles made by certain other companies, so get back to music sooner… and without 3 tons of eEcChHoO at the end….
Congratulations to the team at DRC FM for being open-minded and adventurous with their jingles – and Jon and the JAM team…
July 2, 2013 at 7:54 pm #90607muffyStill sounding great …
July 3, 2013 at 9:03 pm #90618Jeffrey T. MasonMemberAm I the only one who notices the retooled “Music Maker” cuts? That’s the Sundance package from the 70’s that JAM continued to syndicate, most notably for WCAU-FM in Philadelphia.
July 3, 2013 at 9:36 pm #90619GrahamCollinsVery, very nice, I like this package a lot. Ron Sedaille playing the request bed incessantly alerted me to the fact that there might be some new JAM on air at Big D.
The thing is this was in February 2012!
Same applies to Pacific Coast. This package aired in February 2011 but has only recently appeared on the JAM website.
Maybe Jon will explain whether this is broadly contractual or otherwise…..

Interesting. I’ve never heard that package before – which cuts are based on that one, and could you (or anyone else) post some examples? Thanks!

JAM – The Music Maker / Right Direction Comparison by Jeffrey T. Mason
July 4, 2013 at 12:35 am #90626bobgreenradioMemberno jeffrey, youre not the only one that noticed the rehash of the old package they ‘bought’ (not produced), but why bother pointing it out? several folks here have on blinders and so it goes.
its clear to me there are no ‘stops’ left to pull out. tired is tired & old.
the rest of the people that listened to it, however, have a clue to whats going on and an ear. (yawn)
July 4, 2013 at 2:00 am #90627Jeffrey T. MasonMemberBob, I wasn’t condemning them as you are. Now, I’m sorry I gave you the avenue to do so.
VERY few people remember “The Music Maker.” It’s been years since anyone has aired it. I think those 3 cuts sound quite fresh along with the rest of this new package.
July 4, 2013 at 3:35 am #90629mjb1124MemberThanks Jeffro for posting the Sundance originals. It’s funny, when I first heard those three DRC cuts, I thought sounded like a throwback to the mid-70’s era of jingles. I guess it was no coincidence. I think JAM did a great job remixing those Sundance cuts to fit today’s Classic Hits radio, and am glad they’re finding things to do with that library. It’s not like nobody’s ever repackaged old material before – TM had “Overture Remastered” and the Jack FM version of You for instance.
Besides, the other 13 cuts are brand-new. And they may not be to everyone’s preference, but the PD was clearly pleased with them, and they sure didn’t hurt the ratings. Me, I think they’re perfectly suited to stations playing a mix of 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s hits in the 2010’s. But hey, as the kids these days say, “haters gonna hate”.
July 8, 2013 at 11:49 am #90693simon_t123MemberI don’t think there’s an issue with updating the 70’s era cuts for DRC, after all what’s more authentic for launching into 70’s era songs on DRC … than an authentic 70’s era jingle !!! I’d imagine the true cost of a fully custom package to be prohibitive to most stations, it was pointed out to me once that DRC was not in a huge market itself not I believe the market leader so perhaps issues of cost mean some ‘recycling’ ? I’m sure there’s no hidden or sinister selling of old as new as with the likes of Ron @ DRC there’s a wealth of jingle knowledge to have realised ! This is just a great way of refreshing some truly authentic jingles, what’s great is that the lyrics sound soooo much better, I’m not a fan of the early JAM vocals … the modern sound is of course fantastic
There’s also perhaps a chance #4 #8 & #11 are not in use @ DRC ? and like the one or two extra cuts appearing on the ‘Pacific Coast’ demo that have not been used by KOST, they are just extra jingles brought in to create a more marketable package ?
Elsewhere on JM we’ve spotted a fair number of recycled, updated & re-versioned jingles from the 90’s featuring in demo’s for packages in the past few years, some of those cuts were JAM / Top Format creations no longer in use in the Europe market & so I guess free to have been added to recent, appropriate packages from JAM …
July 9, 2013 at 12:55 am #90699radioboy949I would love to hear JAM remix MANY of their old packages. This is a great example of how retro tracks with modern production can contemporize old and new and bring a fresh and progressive, even HIP sound to a format playing old music, with jingles that sound relevant not only between the songs but in today’s radio. Bravo Jon Wolfert and WDRC!
July 9, 2013 at 12:55 am #90700BigdaveSo what if they have? If it’s giving a nod to a classic cut of the past, then so much better.
Top Gold by Top Format has a number of a cuts that borrow heavily from the sound of such packages as Jet Set through to The Textures, and remember this…?
July 9, 2013 at 1:13 am #90701BigdaveI should say re the above..see if you can spot the link to Fun Vibrations at 1.15

The cut was called “Colorsonic” Dave.
July 9, 2013 at 4:40 am #90706loujosephsOften as a program director you would go back to older jingles that you couldn’t run when you first started with a station because the music you played didn’t work with the jingles. Now it does..so you re do an earlier package. Or in some cases when the jingles were on the air everywhere but in your market you could go back and say hey no one ever had TM here so..lets do a grab bag of tm stuff. That in a nutshell is why folks do this

That’s a logical theory, but I actually have heard all three of these cuts used on-air at DRC-FM. And I agree with radioboy949, I’d love to hear more remixes like this.
July 10, 2013 at 3:31 am #90715radioboy949Think about it. Hip hop samples a lot of 70s jazz fusion, adds scratches, phases and such. Has for twenty years. It changed the game. JAM owns the tracks to 70s jingles and can CREATIVELY do the same with their OWN jingles, add fresh, contemporary vocals, and repackage forty year old packages to today’s radio. I think it’s genius!
July 11, 2013 at 2:07 am #90734jlehmannUnfortunately with the recent changes at DRC-FM, including adding 90s music, they’re rarely using these jingles anymore. The TOH cut is gone completely.
Edit: Sorry, I see this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I guess I’ll still express my displeasure for them (almost) dropping the jingles.
July 12, 2013 at 1:32 am #90738LamontTroop212The TOH Jingles was from “Right Direction” From JAM Creative productions here is proof:http://www.jingles.com/jam/radioids/demodl-RightDirection.php
