Hi TC, impressive effort and expense, but what is the thinking at MPF behind storing multi-track session tapes like this, presuming that you already have the 2-track stereo reductions or backing tracks ?

Why is the original Mona Lisa sitting in the Louvre in Paris, for those of us who’ve been there, an actually quite small thing behind a glass screen on the wall, that’s barely visible from behind the public security rail, when I could (and HAVE) bought a digital-source scanned & printed-image MOUSEMAT of it from the museum souvenir shop?
Because the ORIGINAL, and the creative work that went into it, still matters? :^)
OR… Hehheh – someday we’ll be queuing up for a re-sing and “lite” mixouts, rather than the reductions, as Personal Cuts?
(…. please, please, please….)

I live about 250 miles south of RW.
Not exactly the same.June 1, 2016 at 7:07 pm #100220Tracy CarmanMemberAuthorI just wish I lived to Dallas.
Me, too. I’m in Massachusetts… far from Dallas (but shippers deliver here all of the time)!!

Because it makes more sense than sending them to “the skip” (or the landfill, as they say here in the US). Too much stuff has been lost over the years. The only thing I dislike is the shipping bill… the customs fee… and so on and so on. It’s not a cheap adventure!

We’re working on it. Someday I’ll explain the economics of this whole thing………………
June 1, 2016 at 9:55 pm #100225GrahamCollinsThanks Tracy – I suppose it does give you complete flexibility to remix or re-work logos in the future.
Comparing a 24-track session tape to the Mona Lisa or any finished painting doesn’t really work. A better analogy would be to say that the tape is the equivalent of Leonardo’s paint-box. It’s just raw audio, flat and dry.
Until someone with considerable skill works on each track to add EQ, compression, panning and a host of possible outboard FX, then mixes it all to a stereo 2-track master you do not have anything that is listenable or could be considered finished.
June 1, 2016 at 10:17 pm #100226IanFToo much stuff has been lost over the years.
Very true. To think of the amount of audio that has been thrown out of stations worldwide over the past 40 years and more is very sad indeed
June 1, 2016 at 10:56 pm #100227mbMemberIt’s sad that in the UK the GWR group and management pretty did it much as a wholesale exercise when it took over stations – Some staff gleefully tossing out all the archives as a sign of the worthlessness of their heritage and that the GWR way was the only way! They were cultural vandals destroying hours of local audio archives and jingles!
June 2, 2016 at 12:28 am #100228michiMemberIt’s just as bad here… radio just does not appreciate its heritage. In less than 10 years, we are going to be coming up on the 100th anniversaries of some stations.. hopefully stations will take the time to remember and acknowledge their past.

Well anytime you find yourself in this neck of the woods, feel free to stop by for a tour, like several others have.
