. . . . when jingle collecting was fun, and we did silly things to get our jingles :)

In the days before the net, I used to write out my entire collection on reams of A4 paper and mail it out. God that was a headache!

I once remember seeing an advert in a magazine from a certain Mr Barras. I replied and we’ve been in contact ever since!

Ahhh yes the good old days……
My list used to be typed on my old Amstrad “Home Computer”
I think Michael Bolton still owns a copy of it (all 30 pages)!!!
Anyway here’s my old mucker Paul Beasley Talking about the new Radio WM Jingles On-Air back in 1988.

My first list that was sent out was copied on a ditto machine (thank you, grade school). Anyone remember them?

Like many people I was totally unaware of jingle collecting before I found out about it on the net and I would imagine that some of the most succesfull ones who have been at it for at least 15 years must have some good contacts.

This is probably a good excuse to thank a certain Nicky Schiller for starting off my collection with an MD of the Invicta FM Century 21 package which I thought was a great introduction into the jingle collecting phase. My only regret is that I haven’t been able to find any new packages to trade with him because he has made a great contribution to my collection in addition to the other members here who I have been lucky enough to trade with.

What you would do is write your list (or whatever) on a sheet of paper attached to a heavy inked paper (like carbon paper). You would then peel the sheet from the backing. What you typed/wrote would be backwards on the reverse of the paper in heavy ink. That was put on a drum, which was rolled through a machine containing alcohol, which would release some of the ink to the sheet that was pressed against it. A more painful process than photocopying, but in those days… photocopiers were about the size of volkswagon and expensive to operate.

Perfect explanation of the mimeograph (ditto) machine, TC

But you forgot to mention the pleasant chemical smell of a fresh mimeograph. I remember entire classrooms holding test papers up to their faces to inhale the aroma. 8)

Ah right, we called them “duplicators” over here.

I had many lists duplicated in the good old days – not jingle ones though.

And let’s not forget that stylish shade of blue/purple print! And, how many ditto machines printed clearly? It was ALWAYS somewhat blurred.

                            Oh Yes!

Before ‘Tipex’ there was a healthy amount of duplicator sheet sniffers!

I always remember them being called ‘Gestetners’ at my school.

Yes of course . . . Gestetner was the brand name! It all comes flooding back . . . .

My mum works at a school and they’ve still got BOTH theirs. One is electric and one you have to turn the handle manually!!

How does this relate to jingles again?!?

I deleted my original post somehow :? Luckily, I’ve been able to retrieve it from my internet history, so here it goes again:

Fortunately (or unfortunately I’m not sure) I have never known life collecting before the internet. In fact it was the good old net that started me off collecting seriously as aposed to merely recording ‘off-air’. You see I never even realised they’re were people as daft as me until I joined one of those jingle mailing lists on Yahoo or it’s predecessor in around 1998. I can still remember the delight of getting hold of my first full package – Radio 1 1992. The internet as been a great source for getting into contact with other collectors, the best of course, being this site!

Began ‘collecting’ jingles the way many of us started (recording off radio) from turn of 80s/90s through until mid 90s.

First had access to internet at Uni in mid 1990s – which at that time was still exciting as it was still a path to discovery rather than a sea of downloadable material. This lead me to the Alfasound website and ultimately to my first two (of many) Alfasound Collectors cassettes/CDs. These were my first “proper” recordings of jingles.

Have most of the historic stuff I want now, however if it wasn’t for the internet demos then I guess I would still be willing to pay £20 a time for the non industry privilege of listening to “demo” CDs of the new stuff I like!
