It’s been a bit quiet this week, so I was thinking……
We’ve had a few threads over the years focusing on how people first got interested in jingles and at the end of 2005 I released that I’d been ‘into’ jingles for over half of my life! However, the interest hasn’t always manifested itself in the same way, so I’ve come up with three rough categories below that fit my jingle interest over the years;
• Jingle Collector
• Jingle Enthusiast
• Jingle AddictWhich category best fits you? I’m sure the list is not exhaustive, indeed there could well be other categories too, perhaps ‘Jingle Intrigued’ or ‘Jingle Aware’ as a pre-requisite to being a Jingle Enthusiast.
I’m not really sure of the exact attributes of each category, however I’ve tried to chronologically describe my own jingle interest below (from age 15), with some highlights that seem relevant to each category.
Here goes……
Jingle Enthusiast (1990 – 1996)
I’d been aware of jingles since the last 80s, in particular “Radio Aire in Tune with Yorkshire” was one that I always loved from around 1987/1988. However, I only began to take a real interest around 1990/1991, when JAM packages started to become heavily syndicated in the UK. Suddenly several of the ILR stations in Yorkshire and England’s North West had very similar jingles and I was fascinated to hear different vocals over the same tracks. This was my main ‘recording off the radio’ era.Jingle Collector (1996 – 2002)
1996 was significant in my jingle career as it was the year I got hold of my first jingle CDs and cassettes, starting off with a couple of the Alfasound ID collection series! It was good to have ‘official’ recordings jingles that hadn’t been recorded over the airwaves. Purchased several of the Alfasound Cassettes in ’96 along with demo CDs from JAM, Groove Addicts (loved the BRMB jingles at the time) and Thompson Creative. The Steve England CD2 demo was probably the last ‘purchase’ of jingles I made in 1999.Jingle Enthusiast (2002 – 2004)
Retired as an ‘active’ collector in 2002 for a several reasons. Moving to a smaller place meant I had little room for loads of CDs MiniDiscs and cassettes. A bad experience with another collector (not returning stuff) made me think it wasn’t worth bothering anymore. Career changes meant I didn’t have the time to dedicate to collecting. Although I kept an active interest in the radio imaging industry I was only interested in jingles that meant something to me, in relation to radio stations that I listed to regularly, or stations that I had listened to a lot in the past.Jingle Addict (2004 – ).
As enthusiast above but a bit more extreme, almost on the point of obsession if I didn’t know where to draw the line.Had my first (and probably last) personal cut produced.
Started to occasionally get a jingle stuck in the head and end up thinking of syndications throughout the day, triggered by random events. Reelworld’s Kiss108 ’04 package is particularly bad here. It would be very embarrassing if alcohol consumption actually lead to them being sung.
Have had ramp bed jingles as a cell phone ringtones, logo stinger or shotgun jingles as a text message alert.
I’m sure all of the above phases above are synonymous with being “Jingle Mad” and I’m sure the last few years would have been a lot less fun, probably to the point of my interest fading, if it wasn’t for the presence of Jinglemad.com as a hub for the worldwide jingle community. So Thanks to the team and everyone that contributes to this site in order to make it such as success.

You missed a vitally important one – Jingle Widow
I guess the description would be…..
“partner of a Jingle Addict who puts up with the habit and occasionally takes a look at this website to try and keep up with some idea of what his/her Jingle Addict partner is so excited about and obsessed by!
Does not really take more than a passing interest in Jingles themself but for the sake of their relationship has to have some knowledge.
Has to be a very patient and long suffering person”
And that would be me

January 30, 2006 at 1:57 pm #25617topcatYou missed another important one: JINGLE PEST
This person has taken collecting to a new obsessive height:
1. He/She insist that they know everything about every producer who created the jingles… even though they’ve only been collecting for a couple of months.
2. They insist that they are a serious collector… even though their entire collection consist of .mp3 files encoded at 64 bits in mono… and/or all their stuff is archived on off-speed no bias cassettes.
3. They are self-important, and feel that it’s YOUR responsibility to give them copies of each and every tape that has even passed through your hands. Oh… and since they’re serious, they also want them on no-bias cassettes NOW.
4. They have no respect for your time. So what if you have a full-time job, run a business and have a family to support and spend time with. What do you mean you won’t be able to dub those elussive WABC jingle demos immediately. Who do you think you are?
5. They don’t understand why they should offer to reimburse you for shipping and materials. CD blanks are free and International or domestic postage is free also. Hell… I’m surprised they don’t insist on free FedEx in some cases.
6. They might have some important rare unknown jingle find to share with you. Do you need a copy of the PAMS Series 40 demo? They have a 12th generation dub where the sound is lost in the noise floor that they might be willing to share with you… despite the fact that they promissed not to give out copies.

Is there such a thing as a female jingle collector, addict, etc :
I agree with everyone on this thread…as long as we don’t end up with a jingle extremist!

January 30, 2006 at 4:13 pm #25620MartinSThanks for your replies folks….. this is looking interesting.
Jingle Pest, Jinge Widow are good ones to add to the list.
I wonder if we could complete an A-Z, starting off at Jingle Addict, through to Jingle Widow…..Y?…Z?
What about categories to encompass people that go only for certain eras (mmmm do they really exist) or just certain jingle styles?
We don’t have to confine it just to those sharing our hobby, or those that have an appreciation for finely crafted radio idenification. What about those evil Programme Directors that take over at a station and immediately prematurlely withdraw an excellent package in favour of the dreaded dull sweepers?
I have a few in mind for the female jingler, but perhaps shouldn’t post them here!

That’s a shame. I did have an idea of a jingle collecting dating agency but that is totally si-fi! Imagine a Kelly Brook lookalike wanting to get hold a Metro fm 1995! Totally dreaming now!

January 30, 2006 at 9:24 pm #25623BarrasI was watching Sky News this afternoon and they broadcast a serious piece on environmental and climate changes and how parts of the UK are going to be submerged under sea-water sooner than we think. Some professor mentioned the words “Meltdown” and I started to sing that JAM package to myself. That kind of sums it up, how it is for me…. 😉

I think we can add “The Jingle Hoarder” to the list. This type of person is most likely to say “yes I do have what you want, but I can’t give it to you”.
