Hopefully Bruce or one of the lurkers can shed some light on whom the singers and producers are. The is a session for the defunct “Show Radio” in Albany, New York. The session was shot onto Betamax Pro to excerpt for use in their television campaign. The six tapes survived (tho the final commercial didn’t) and made their way into my hands.
I sent the tapes to a friend at NBC Burbank who was kind enough to transfer them to VHS…. then the VHS I sent to Florida and had converted to DVD so David could edit it.
I assume the older gentleman singing on the video is Ron Hicklin, as this was done at his studio. I’ll leave it to the “pros” to enlighten us. Any way you slice it… it makes for good entertainment since it’s a professional video (with some crafted editing by Mr. Hemsley).

Lurker here, I`ve compared the video to a photo that I posted a while ago on Jingle Mad and that is Ron Hicklin….
Thanks for allowing us to see this video, I still find it fascinating to see how jingles are constructed, produced and sung in the recording studio. This video is now added to my collection of jingle sessions on video, which includes:
JAM – Viking FM
JAM – Fashion fm
JAM – Jon Wolfert sonovox session
JAM – Magic 106
JAM – 30 minute video of an acapella session for an Oregon classical station
Century 21 – Trent FM
Century 21 – Sound FM
Century 21/PAMS tracks – County Sound
Alfasound – various BBC stations
Steve England & Alan Fawkes looking around Century 21 in Dallas
Metro Radio (UK) in house commercial jinglesFor any one who hasn`t seen the information I posted about Ron Hicklin and HLC, checkout page 22 (of 28) of BARRAS montages, here`s the link…

Thanks to all concerned for this great feature.
Can’t help wondering though whether it’s a staged event. The lighting is pretty good and the singers hit the mark on each take. Perhaps it’s just careful editing!?
Love being the fly on the wall at jingle sessions!!

MemberFascinating – especially the second half where we see the singers in action.
I think I might give the next feature a miss: “Paper Magic” – Origami in Action series 1, features six episodes of paper-folding action.
Thanks for posting.

Hmmm . . . according to the site, ratnob, the next feature is part three of the North-West Radio Night . . . . maybe your glasses are steamed up.

Must’ve missed it-it’s not up now. Topcat, if you send it to me I’ll take a look.

Some excellent Video over the last few weeks David…
Loved Part 3…Is there going to be a part 4 with the rest of the Jingle Quiz?
The HLC Video was good….That blonde female singer…..No chest but wow..what a fabulous voice! 😆May 29, 2006 at 12:49 pm #21073DavidHemsley
Pete: The jingle quiz was only the two questions . … the rest was radio.
BTW- the noise in the background was rudely provided by the RADIO people and NOT the jingle peeps.

I wasn’t there, but I’ll take my best guess here. The group singers look to be Gene Morford, Bob Joyce, Ron Hicklin, Debby Hall(Glenson), Edie Lehman(Boddicker) and I can’t place the other girl on the far end-perhaps Darlene Koldenhoven. The soloists look to be Paul Mirkovich and Susan Boyd(Joyce)-although when I worked with Susan in the mid 1990’s she was a redhead-but it sure looks like her. The producer is Ron Hicklin-he and his engineer (who I’ve never seen before) seem to be doing a vocal comp-bouncing the solo tracks together. It’s a really nice sounding group.
The singing shots are obviously staged for the camera-this is not live in real-time. The bass response on Gene’s voice wouldn’t be that ‘present’ 3-feet from the mic. The guys-only cut has 4-part writing on the background parts-my guess is that cut was done with the 3 guys on one mic with Gene singing bass on another, and the solo was overdubbed (then ‘performed’ the way you see it for the camera). Also, the process of singing never goes this smoothly-there are always interp and note questions on the first couple of run throughs-plus first tracks always sound a bit stark and thin until the stacks get piled on. I know from being filmed at sessions before that nobody wants any of the crap to get out-thus saving the final, polished tracks for the camera dance. However, I wasn’t there and everything here is purely speculation on my part.
One scene that brought back some major memories was watching Ron Hicklin work the faders with what we used to call ’10-Finger Automation’-working on mixing boards either pre-automation or boards on which you wouldn’t engage the automation until the final mix, as it took up two tracks of the tape (one for the basic automation and one for updating it)-you’d always save it until the end in case you needed a spare track during tracking and overdubbing. I can’t tell you how many times the middle finger on my left hand (marking the destination volume) got banged up by a fader begin pushed by my right hand at lightning speed.
Ah, the days of steam powered production…

Hey, something automatically turned the word cr*p into ‘not good’ in my last post. I thought we only had to deal with friggin’ censorship here in the US!

Look on the bright side – it used to change the word to “sausages”. Made for some rather amusing posts . . .

Don’t you think ‘bangers’ would’ve been even better?
