      From today’s Tom Taylor NOW e-mail newsletter:

      Greg Clancy caps a rise from “first-call” jingle singer in Dallas – meaning he was very good – to music director, then creative director, by now being named General Manager of TM Studios. That’s the Dial Global-owned jingle, imaging and music company based in Dallas, with staffers in Valencia, CA and Denver. Greg picks up the affiliate management and operations oversight functions from Chris Long, who’s the EVP of Advertising Sales for parent Dial Global. DG’s President of Programming Kirk Stirland says “Greg has really shown us he’s got vision and a plan to move us forward.”

          well, no matter what, this is a wonderful promotion for him. good luck to him!

            TM Studios have reinvented themselves the past couple of years and the product coming out of their doors recently has been strong.

                Firstly, I am absolutely delighted for Greg ( CONGRATULATIONS), and also for TM; despite various re-incarnations (including the Century 21 years) it still carries on creating jingles of the highest quality. I can testify to that, as over the last year Greg has written/ re-created the vocal parts for some ‘hard to re-create jingles’ I very esoterically decided I ‘must have’. A Dr. Don Rose acapella (audio below) and a re-sing of a mono William B. Tanner ‘Now Sound’ cut, both with NONE of the original singers, but vocally stunning. Plus of course the mammoth ‘ Chicago Song’ which is on JM…

                However, whilst mildly sarcastic comments like “I presume that he will only able to sing at JAM now in his lunchbreak” are taken in the spirit they were intended in, I suspect (having met and worked with Greg at JAM in the early 1990s) he might not be so happy with comments like, “the stuff ive heard out of there lately is better than anything else from texas. theyre positioned to be the new big gun from big “D”.”

                The fact is that there have ALWAYS been several ‘big guns’ in Dallas over the decades, who whilst in ‘competition’, respect each other, socialise together, and acknowledge each others product. When I bought the ‘Chicago song’ from TM Jon Wolfert at JAM made very kind complimentary comments about it in a private email to me.

                Greg and his father Jim are both ‘gentlemen’ in every sense, a part of the fabric of the Dallas jingle business, and of course were ‘mainstays’ at JAM. At some of our Trent/GEM-AM sessions Greg was in the ‘boy’ group when Chris K. was directing the vocal group, and Jon was engineering the session ~ THAT is perfection.

                Over the years various radio station have gone back and forth between JAM and TM (and a few other notable Dallas companies/ writers) and it’s this GROUP strength that gives this city its ‘fame’ to us small bunch of anoraks/ devotees who believe DALLAS has been and still is THE place for great sung identification.

                Greg’s appointment is indeed great for TM, which has a superb catalogue, but I’m sure he greatly respects the vast catalogue not far away on Parkdale Drive. And as regards “I presume that he will only able to sing at JAM now in his lunchbreak” I do not believe Greg sings there now as he clearly has a lot on his plate. But remember it’s only a few years since ‘the TM’ himself, Tom Merriman, worked with Jon on JAM’s ‘Top News” package…. a superb result of DALLAS TEAMWORK.

                  well, to be more detailed, i expect something new, some excitement out of dallas soon. nothing has come out of that area for the past 5 years or more, other than 45 year old resings.
                  and that my friend is why washington area studios have been so busy.

                      Well Bob that’s arguable (I’ll leave that to others). But it relates more to the fact that very little has happened musically for 15 years for radio to reflect/ EVOLVE with, than the skills of those great people at JAM, TM and other parts of the ‘Big D’ ?

                      Radio cannot evolve when music is static ?

                      The synthetic music of manufactured artists who need auto-tune and who have never even written a song is not much to inspire new jingle styles? If you review the 60s, 70s and 80s at least artists evolved n a t u r a l l y….. We had the long-term skills of Lennon-McCartney, King-Goffin, Gene Pitney, Mann-Weil, Jagger-Richards, Brian Wilson, John-Taupin, and of course Bacharach & David !

                      I DO feel sorry for both the listeners and radio programmers of 2013 as they have so little of QUALITY, or that is ‘Musical’ to use? We can hardly blame the jingle industry for this? And as audio posts on here show those JAM ‘Z’ cuts (for example) are proving to be TIMELESS, and work perfectly decades later for many of today’s stations.

                      My copy was off an old ‘Cruisin’ album from aeons ago…. LOVE IT ! Listening to airchecks of Dr. Don, he was SUCH a talented warm presenter, it makes me wish I was 25 again, and could have spent all my ‘career’ just as a dj, and not have to go off to Manchester or Dallas to make those pesky jingles for everyone else on the station!

                      But THANK GOODNESS I WAS doing that before there were any jingle companies in Washington; I doubt if anoraks will be nostalgic about THEIR product in 45 years time ?

                        Well, let’s be fair here: while you may not like today’s pop music (this isn’t my favorite era of music either though I do like some of it), it’s what today’s younger listeners want, and programmers of CHR and AC formats have to cater to it. And the imaging has to fit alongside it.

                        TM have done a great job of keeping their sound up to the times, and they come off as a very contemporary jingle outfit these days, while still also being able to produce the classic Dallas sound as evidenced by Len’s cuts. JAM, by comparison, has stuck a bit more to their traditional production values and seem to thrive on their library, though the New & Now package is a step towards a more modernized direction.

                        But really, I think both companies have very talented people working for them and produce quality product that I’m sure their clients are always satisfied with. Same goes for other Dallas companies like Radioscape and Zone (though apparently the latter is based in Phoenix now?). There’s no need for comparison.

                                Well this topic is fast evolving into script material for a new sit-com abut radio stations!

                                BGR – You better copyright ‘it’s still lipstick on a pig’, or some unscrupulous person will have it sung on a Z100 cut!

                                That seems a fair summation. I like ‘New & Now’ it’s ‘classy’. And I hope some young PD’s recognise it potentially has long longer life-expectancy than these screaming synthetic sonic logos from other companies!
