Hello jinglers,
What do you think makes a jingle good? Equally what makes one bad?
Do they have to be a good piece of music, with good vocals, or do they have to be more than that, in order to “work”? Do they only work in context or can they stand alone as a piece of “art”?
I don’t know if I’m brave enough to ask for examples!!!
Oh go on then…….are there axamples of the good the bad and the ugly out there?
Cheers,
Reg.

I’ve never heard them before!
I was expecting to hear the “frequency changeover” cuts
– but these are brill!June 1, 2006 at 7:38 pm #27558gameswizardMemberwixy1360 wrote:

…these are brill!i thought everyone had these old radio 2 jingles.i originally got them from alfasound yonks ago when they were made available to collectors.
they were on two cassettes.one tape was radio 1 and radio 2 1976 and 1978 jam demos.other tape was radio 1 and radio 2 1980 and 1982 demos.and they were on CrO2/TypeII tape.better quality 😉
up to then the id collections were only on Normal/TypeI tape 😡 😆
(i made a mistake there:the tape inside the alfasound cassette was CrO2 tape, but housed in a TypeI shell.it showed in an auto tape selector cassette deck as TypeI-the TypeII shell had extra slots-in the top-next to the erasure prevention tabs-which a TypeI shell doesnt have.so TypeII/CrO2 tape in a TypeI/Normal cassette shell gives a ‘brighter’ sound.incidentally,a TypeIV/metal tape had other slots aswell-near the top middle.).June 1, 2006 at 7:54 pm #27559DavidHemsleyLol yes – the staple of anyones collection!
But great choices there Mike . . . .

Ah… thanks Mike, I do feel daft now!
I bought over 20 Alfasound cassettes, but there are some yawning
gaps in the collection that I never got to fill before Alfa went down 😥June 2, 2006 at 8:48 am #27562BigdaveWhat are you missing Iain? I’m sure we can fill certain gaps between us re the Alfasound collection series…..

Thanks Dave!
I made a list for (can’t remember!) a few months ago of the ones I
actually have – need to find it! – either that or I tip the cassettes drawer
out on the floor and go through all the “old” stuff again! There were a couple of the proper Alfa Collection CDs I missed out
on too – like a lot of people, I bought stuff on an occasional basis
and never imagined that Alfa would close… (Clyde 1 JAM .. grrrrhh!)I’ll post back on this in a day or two, OK?
June 3, 2006 at 11:43 am #27568gameswizardMemberthis sounds quite good on decent headphones.
i been messing round with these and came up with ‘instrumentals’ of both radio 2 jingles.see what you think…

RADIO 2 ‘INSTRUMENTALS’What program did you use to do that Mike?
I remember there was a (complicated) way of doing it with Cool Edit but
never had the patience to try!June 3, 2006 at 3:58 pm #27572gameswizardMemberadobe audition i used.
open file.then in ‘edit view’ highlight the whole file by double clicking the waveform.or highlight a selected area.then Effects>Filters>Centre Channel Extractor.there’s a list of various effects inc. karaoke, accapella… to choose from.
it works with any good stereo music with mono vocals (the mono element is removed ie identical content on the left and right channels).
WAV/Lossless for best results.works good with high quality mp3’s etc…
here’s another 2 more examples:
RADIO 2 COUNTRY STYLE
RADIO 2 HOLIDAY JINGLEShere’s some examples of radio 1 1987 vocals and instrumentals.
they can be hit and miss, some sounding better than others.again,it depends on the stereo and mono content in the recording:

Regie,
Your question can be answered on a variety of levels…. but let me answer this from the radio station’s prospective. By definition, a jingle is a musical method for a radio station to identify itself. To be good, it must be memorable. The idea of identifying the station is so that the listener remembers the call letters / frequency / sell line (the best music and so on) of the station that s/he’s listening to. In this manner, the listener will be able to identify the station to ratings services (such as Arbitron in the US) and their friends (which will hopefully promote additional listenership). Also, the jingle helps obviously to differentiate the station from all of the other competitors.
In some cases, you can have the most cleverly produced package for a station… but the listeners don’t notice. In terms of the users of JingleMad and other jingle related websites, the users are conscious of jingles above and beyond the music already. So the answer to your question from the typical person here (sorry to stereotype, folks) will tend to revolve around the musical content and the usage of clever lyrics… not that there’s anything wrong with that.
In terms of advertising jingles, you can have the most memorable jingle in the world… but if it doesn’t promote sales (sell products), it’s almost irrelevent. Back in the last sixties / early seventies, Alka-Seltzer had a great promotion with the sell line “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing”. The commercial series won numerous awards. They were cute and memorable… but they didn’t sell any additional products. So, by the definition of being memorable and selling additional products… they were a failure.
Now that I’ve given you the official answers…. I like jingles that give excitement to the radio station sound. I’m partial to the PAMS product of the mid-to-late sixties, personally… and you’ll find that most here are JAM fans (based on what I’ve observed in various threads since this web site’s inception). There is no right or wrong answer to your question — and that’s why many here produce such totally diverse samplers based on their likes, loves and dislikes.
Best,
-TC in Boston
June 4, 2006 at 8:04 am #27578MarcMannetje][ the best jingle in my opinion is cut #3 from jam’s ‘uni-que’, the transition fast-slow, very good sing arrangements and the q95 audiologo very subtile at the staccato beginning of the track. q-tiful![/b]
