I've just been up in the Midlands for a few days and spent some time in the car listening to Mercia and I have to say how different this station sounds now.The presentation is really relaxed and the jingles really do work – although the WB website has jingles just sung as “Coventry” , the on-air versions say “Coventry and Warwickshire”.
I agree on the Mercia jingles.. I made a couple of trips up the M40/M42 in recent months, and they certainly jumped out of the car radio and sounded bright and energetic and fitting in well with the music/presentation.
December 3, 2010 at 10:27 pm #76647LenGroat.. The Radio Trent 'wake' .. !
If you are having a 'wake' to mark the 'passing' of the Radio Trent name after 35 years, what better place than Nottingham Castle…
Organised by David Lloyd (right in the first picture) and Paul Robey, who between them have worked on or managed over 20 stations – from LBC to Galaxy, from BRMB to BBC Radio Nottingham, Leicester Sound to Lincs FM, Saga, Smooth…. BUT they admit that 'the' stations they loved the most were Radio Trent in the 80s, and of course GEM-AM from 1988 onwards.
Paul ran the original GEM for several years after I left in 1994, and (Orion's) David is behind the re-naming of Heart in the East Midlands to GEM!
Ironically, they staged the party the same week the tracks for the new 'GEM 106' jingles were being recorded (think Michael Buble), and that station will launch at the same time as Trent 'passes away'
Jingle conoisseurs will notice the 'Sownds Like Yu Wantto Heeeeeer' 't'shirts (repros!) The second pic includes some names you may have heard sung on Trent 1-14 jingle packages (Alfa – Jam – and one Century 21) (big) John Peters and Andy Miller… Also at the party was the large perspex Radio Trent wall sign from reception in the 1970s.
Soon that will be all that is left…

January 1, 2011 at 9:15 am #77002ah-mediaMemberHappy New Year y'all
Great to hear David doing the handover – Must dig out the original GEM launch .. IIRC he was in Victoria Park but at least he was in a warm studio this morning.
Very different jingle to the BRMB/Mercia pack – hopefully Paul Plant will add the GEM demo to the website in the week.

A significant day for British commercial radio, and British made jingles… not the least because one of the 'big bosses' believes in LOCAL radio, and is still able to broadcast…!David Lloyd (and his team) have brought back the 'Great East Midlands'..
.. and here is a MINT copy of one of the cuts from the new package

January 1, 2011 at 12:46 pm #77011ah-mediaMemberSounding great on air – I, however, would remove the “Time Tunnel on Heart” liner that was played twice this morning

January 2, 2011 at 8:23 am #77021LenGroatThanks David…
.. and thanks Iain for an interesting selection of 'other mixes' from the 1988 package. It was created from great PAMS cuts + Alan Fawkes material in that style. Alan really did love doing the semi-jazzy, 'Hanna Barbera', brassy cuts, and with the same Dallas vocal group on all the package it really blended together well.
It was Jackie Dickson doing the solo on 'Smooth Sailing' … great memories.
Oooh, and listen to the jingle at 3.22 !
“Great music, in the Great East Midlands ~ GEM ~ AM”

“Great music, for the Great East Midlands ~ GEM ~ 106”
January 2, 2011 at 3:03 pm #77024IainJohnstonMemberLen – I've still not found that particular GEM-AM item you'd enquired about – but I'm now realising just how many CDs of GEM/Trent/LS material I actually have here!

Reference the lyrics/logo for the 'new' GEM jingles … listen to this !http://www.4shared.com/audio/a7bQtt6T/GEM_package_1_-_GMITGEM.html
And now sing 'Great Music for the Great East Midlands ~ GEM ~ 106' over this track !
http://www.4shared.com/audio/7pKpORdZ/GEM_package_1_-_GMITGEM-track.html
On a secondary note, listen again to this it is a 100% Alan Fawkes/ Alfa track that we wrote, not based on anything, superbly played in Manchester, with of course a re-created PAMS vocal group with Jackie Dickson on lead.

January 11, 2011 at 11:14 pm #77107mbMemberThe jingles are up on the WB site and sounding great.
cut 6 is my favourite lthough I think cut 9 is very very similar to one of the Wyvern / Beacon cuts more a rework than new jingle.
Have to say the Orion packages are all very nice, upbeat, feel good jingle.January 12, 2011 at 12:16 am #77109BarrasThanks for letting us know the jingles are on-line Michael and I agree with you, cut #06 is my favourite too. BTW is cut #01 “ramp” a Kylie Minogue music bed ? – overall though, they sound great…
January 12, 2011 at 12:21 am #77110m_hodgeyMemberYeah, thanks for the pointer Michael about the GEM package being online. Interesting that cut 5 of the ramps is a full instrumental though; surely that must be a mistake!
