I think my on air days are long gone! Plus, I do not miss it at all…its fun to listen back to airchecks, but that’s about it. Yes, the re-sings on some of the NIC cuts were just to show that they were flexible to sing other ways than the way the demo was. Agree on KABX…if we would have stayed Oldies, we would have had a ball with jingles (maybe even some PAMS cuts!)
November 9, 2011 at 4:22 am #80861loujosephsI hung up my headphones in 96, still did some voice work until 2000…then was taking more time than it was worth… The only thing that would get me on the air again would be a We Rocking Reunion at WERS FM…that would be fun…
November 10, 2011 at 10:43 pm #80881ratnobMemberAuthorGary: how about my ‘morning man question’ (earlier). I assume they are the most important part of the programming jigsaw but also the most difficult for a consultant to ‘control’. How do you build the breakfast strand … ?
November 11, 2011 at 2:49 am #80883loujosephsGary has worked with some of the top morning people starting with the late Salty Brine at WPRO AM, to Dick Purtan, JP McCarthy, Joe Martelle to name but a few…and I am sure he’s got some picks for the next generation of morning superstars..

November 12, 2011 at 9:36 pm #80910garyberkInterestingly enough, in AC radio mornings are not all that important. This is especially the case in PPM markets. We are finding that AC listening starts to kick in heaviest bet 8-830am. Many of these big AC’s have surprisingly low listening in the 5-6-& 7am hours. Because of this, many AC’s here in the states are moving away from the big morning shows. At the same time, many of the “big” morning shows, are not doing well in PPM. They are either not getting renewed or being let go. Two such shows had that happen here in Detroit. As for the next generation of morning superstars, that’s a tough one. I’m sure there will be some, but they are hard to find, and I’m not confident they will come out of AC radio. Most likely, they will come from rock or CHR. LouJoe is right. I did have the chance to work with some of the greats, and I’m very glad for that..Salty was one of the best ever!
November 29, 2011 at 10:31 pm #80996loujosephsJust got back from the Caribbean radio on the Dutch Islands sucks, in Central America, Panama and Costa Rica..really bad…but hardly any jingles..no sign of JAM.

Fascinating. How the world changes. Thanks, as ever, for the insights.
On a related matter – what’s your view on Christmas programming that begins in November? Is it a guaranteed ratings winner, and how does it work – locking listeners in ready for Christmas?November 30, 2011 at 10:43 am #81000BarrasJust got back from the Caribbean radio on the Dutch Islands sucks, in Central America, Panama and Costa Rica..really bad…but hardly any jingles..no sign of JAM.
Just got back from Spain and to use your word, Spanish radio “sucks” too. I did hear some sung jingles on a CHR station, not sure which jingle company (not JAM, TM, Reelworld etc..) but all the other radio stations were using sweepers/liners.
November 30, 2011 at 11:41 am #81002MarcMannetjeDavid some stations do use sung jingles, like KISS FM and 40 Principales as I heard when I was in Barcelona last summer. You seem right about most CHR’s I hardly heard any sung ID at all…
November 30, 2011 at 11:48 am #81003BarrasSorry this is digressing from the Gary Berkowitz thread but thanks Marc, I did hear one station using an edited version of the GMT signal !
November 30, 2011 at 5:09 pm #81006loujosephsCorrect me if I am wrong but Gary had the xmas music thing long before anyone, back in 1972 going all xmas music on college station WERS…now there is not a major market in the US where you don’t find an all xmas station..Fort Lauderdale/Miami has at least three, and Jacksonville FL has two.
In the era of PPM you wonder if this scores big..December 3, 2011 at 5:47 pm #81036garyberkHere’s the bottom line on Christmas music. It is a killer ratings tactic. If you play the right list of music (and even if you don’t sometimes) it always wins, no matter what the market. As for going early, those that do go way early, sometimes get punished in ratings, but they really reap the benefits as it gets closer to Christmas. LouJoe is right. We were into Christmas music when we went to Emerson together in the 70’s! As for Christmas imaging, who does it better than Jon at Jam? No one!
December 3, 2011 at 5:50 pm #81037garyberkNote to Jammin…you are right! If we had kept KABX Oldies, it would have been Jam city! The only question is which would I have used, Positron-Logo Set, or some of the Z100 80s stuff..not sure. They both sound great on oldies-classic hits stations…WOMC here uses the Positron stuff, and K-Hits in Chicago uses Z100 cuts. Love em both!
December 3, 2011 at 6:04 pm #81039glenA JAM city sounds great!!

Whether Gary may have heard it before or not, that HAS to be a cue for Mark H to re-post his excellent JAM Personal Cuts re-sing of the Sky Radio Christmas cut!
December 5, 2011 at 6:08 am #81051tyty21right gary. that would be a hard choice, but as i think it would be, do it again/home of the hits would’ve been a good call, plus at least positron/pro-mod/class action/priority 1 would’ve done well. but if you wanted to step out the box, i think a couple of the customs from the 70’s/80’s era of WGY would’ve worked, plus demention 2, you’ve got it, backseat music, and special touch would’ve done well. those you rarely hear on-air. oh yeah, pro radio would’ve got some good use there. of course you mensioned pams, the ones you don’t hear resings for from jam are things like from series 39 and on. philadelphia story, solid rock, WAKY custom, shaft and shotgun, very rare to find on-air. another cool question, have you ever contributed checks for stations you’ve consulted/been on-air to toppy? Tophour.net to be exact. they’ve got good legals for show, plus, i know at least 1 jam check for a certain station in detroit is up there. if not, that would be a great oppertunity to here some jam legals for stations in the markets we havent heard. especially KABX and KBOQ. at least we could hear how the station sounds with a jam jingle.
