September 23, 2015 at 9:10 pm #98516UKJinglesMemberAuthorOh no! (searches the cupboard for Pampers in anticipation tee hee)
I managed to get through last Saturday Evening without any “accidents” So I’m anticipating the 10th October will be fine………..
September 23, 2015 at 9:22 pm #98517JAM / PAMSMemberI’m not going to tell you which cuts are in the new batch, because I think it’s more fun for a package to reveal itself in real time. But just for the record, here is how these new Radio 2 jingles came about:
Several months ago Chris Reay from Radio 2 contacted us to say they wanted to add some more Pick Of The Pops jingles to the show, and asked if I could recommend any classic Radio 1 cuts which would work with the new lyrics (“Tony Blackburn”, “Pick of the Pops”, “Radio 2” etc.) So out of the hundreds of Radio 1 cuts we’ve done I selected about 15 possibilities, and sent mp3 files of them along with the proposed new lyrics back to Radio 2. After a few weeks of consideration (I’m not sure who was involved in the “considering”), they came back liking 4 of my suggestions and adding 1 cut which wasn’t on my original list. We would have liked to do more than 5 cuts, but even that seemed to be difficult for them budget-wise. Both Tony Blackburn and Chris listened in online as we sang the jingles a few weeks ago, but no major changes were made. It was nice to chat with Tony again for a few moments (he really does enjoy his jingles!)
So what you’re going to hear in a few weeks time are mostly cuts I suggested with lyrics I wrote (not that there are many lyrics to write on these!). We spent our usual amount of “BBC extra time and care” on these (old habits are hard to break), and I think they are up to our usual high Radio 1 & 2 JAM standards. What is surreal to me is to hear jingles which are firmly burned into my mind as Radio 1 cuts now being sung for Radio 2. That’s the kind of thing we would have done as a joke back in the 80s, when those cuts wouldn’t have fit Radio 2 at all. It makes perfect sense now, and it works, but it’s just a bit bizarre. -j
September 24, 2015 at 10:01 am #98519DuncanNewmarchMemberThe jingle fairy has just emailed. BRILLIANT. I wonder which one Jon didn’t pick? Love the fact that after all these years, we’re STILL excited to hear them.
September 24, 2015 at 11:29 am #98520gameswizardMemberA fascinating insight, Jon.
I cant wait to hear these new POTP jinglesSeptember 24, 2015 at 8:03 pm #98524JAM / PAMSMemberI neglected to mention that many of the logistics were worked out by Simon at S2Blue. Thanks, Simon!
I wonder which one Jon didn’t pick?
Perhaps I was a bit conservative in my estimation of how much fun Radio 2 wanted to have with these, so they added the most “outrageous” one.
September 24, 2015 at 10:05 pm #98526GrahamCollinsHaha, nice one Jon. I wonder watt one it could be !
September 24, 2015 at 10:40 pm #98527DuncanNewmarchMemberI’ve thought about it a billion times!! Don’t worry, these poor puns will make sense on Saturday
September 25, 2015 at 4:51 pm #98531UKJinglesMemberAuthorSo…You lucky Boys who have heard these new cuts……..Is the “Sonovox” cut included in the five new cuts (or is this as well as…)
I’m trying to think which JAM Radio One “Sonovox” cut it could be:-?September 26, 2015 at 2:30 pm #98533Sean MartinMemberI can only think of one that had slogan and calls to carry the Radio 2 lyrics . .
Was it from Into The Music?
(Sono) On 275 and 285
(Group) Radio 1September 26, 2015 at 2:41 pm #98534PKMemberSurely it wasn’t the ex Radio 1 Class Action jingle our friend Jeffrey T Mason has on Jeffro Radio with the lyric “It’s Better Than Sex” instead of Across The Nation lol?
September 26, 2015 at 3:51 pm #98535UKJinglesMemberAuthorOk..Let’s play a game and try to guess which Packages these five new cuts are going to come from…….We’ve got 2 weeks!
I’m guessing All “Radio One FM” era cuts (but it would be nice to hear a KZZP cut sung for Radio Two though!)September 26, 2015 at 8:36 pm #98539davewHere we go gang you can see them but cant hear them just yet
Cheers
Dave
September 26, 2015 at 10:38 pm #98541IainJohnstonJudging by some of the “units of ERP”-related hints above, a certain “Radio 1’s staggered migration to FM” cut might appear to be at least one of them – you KNOW you can “hear it in your head”!
As for the sono – (Group) “Across the UK, (sono) Radio (band hit) One” could be worth an each-way bet?
September 26, 2015 at 11:15 pm #98542LenGroatDo you mean THIS cut Iain ??
September 27, 2015 at 5:53 pm #98549IainJohnstonThat’s the one Len – you’ll have to tell Tony B that he can’t use it “in your market”!!!
Sean’s suggestion sounds good too – but why does Jon’s “Outrageous” ring a bell with something once done (in sono) for Trent FM? red herring probably…
There have been the rumours for a long time that Tony wanted 1970s-era cuts for the next top-ups, but general thoughts on here seem to be about 80s/90s JAM?
(PS – no-one has “leaked” me any audio of the new cuts, but it’ll be a treat to hear them on the October 10th :^) )
September 27, 2015 at 6:52 pm #98550UKJinglesMemberAuthorSide tracking my own thread this time……….
Does anyone knows who pays for the Jingles on POTP?
As it’s an Unique Production (Noel Edmonds Company?) Does that mean the BBC don’t actually pay for them or hiring Tony Blackburn, etc…
Just curious how it works…September 27, 2015 at 9:32 pm #98553IainJohnstonPete, as an incredibly small shareholder in what is the reverse-takeover entity that is UBC/Unique (7Digital) today, I wonder if I could find a way of finding out?
(Mr Edmonds hasn’t been an active director for many years; Simon Cole (once upon a time at Piccadilly Radio in Manchester) runs the show still, and I think fellow original member Tim Blackmore (ditto Capital) is still involved)
I wonder if I (technically) “own” a tiny fraction of the “licence” for Tony B to play those JAM cuts on air !?!?!?

Just curious how it works…Radio 2 Pay AFAIK – hence the relatively tight budget its amazing how those jingle hating, JAM hating people at radio 2 do it – then again maybe they are neither of those two thing either despite being painted so occasionally by some.
October 8, 2015 at 9:14 pm #98605UKJinglesMemberAuthorI will also go for a cut from the Radio One 1978 Package!

@35m46s into his latest periscope video, Tony (accidentally) played part of one of his new jingles.
It’s a resing of “Across the nation… 275 and 285… Radio 1”October 9, 2015 at 9:21 am #98614UKJinglesMemberAuthorI will also go for a cut from the Radio One 1978 Package!

Why am I so excited over FIVE new Jingles?
Maybe it reminds me of the great times in the past (Sept 1976, Sept 1978, Sept 1980, Sept 1982 (Eh..maybe not 1982!) waiting to hear the New Sound of Radio One (and Radio Two) -
