Dutch jingle production house Pure Jingles won the competition for defining the new sound of BBC Radio 1. ‘Pushing the Envelope’ is the name of the new on air package that will be updated every three months.
According to http://www.jingleweb.nl over 25 producers pitched for the job.

April 17, 2012 at 4:25 pm #83681MarkSMemberThanks for the update Marc…
This Company produces some excellent jingles – love the material they did for 3 FM, Radio Regenbogen and Kronehit – well done Pure jingles.April 17, 2012 at 5:40 pm #83684IainJohnstonMember“over 25 producers pitched for the job”
I wonder if that included McCasso???

You know me so well Rik
Rather more importantly is Chris Moyles going to ‘love them’ ? I suspect not? And take away his daily audience and the station’s figures collapse.. During his fill-in afternoon shows recently the JAM jingles ‘flew again’… like Concorde.. magnificent…
Too much of it is indulgent presenters playing music that is ‘hip’ but too diverse/obscure to keep people tuned-in for very long.
John Peel rarely used the Dallas jingles, and I don’t think these will ‘fit’ with many of the 10 or so ‘pseudo John Peels’ they now give short esoteric shows to.. at obsure hours…
The Dutch company followed the ‘brief’ well, these are not exactly hard to make?
April 18, 2012 at 1:07 am #83695simon_t123MemberI think the cuts are on target for what R1 was after … not a patch on the good ‘ol days mind but for R1 having read the pitch these are pretty much spot on … I’m wondering tho’ why this kind of imaging was put out to pitch in the first place, surely after hearing some of the in-house creations of fellow JM’ers such as Messers Bethell & Hirst from various JM podcasts this kind of imaging is what you’d expect your own in-house creative producers to be busying themselves with ? You’d pitch out surely for sung ID’s, not sweepers and stagers, a few chords into a sonic logo also can’t possibly be beyond the realms of R1 as seeing a picture of their 90’s prod studio showed the latest digital editing even then plus several keyboards and midi gear, so things must have only evolved since the 90’s & licence fee money could have been saved here by giving the R1 production staffers the task & a few months to get it done ?
There’s only at launch a set number of cuts also, that’s severely limiting usage surely ? It’s an updating package also but you’d have to wonder why R1 didn’t buy the imaging FX on CD and get on with it, sounds like they supplied the raw station voice as it is, unless this is all one big out-sourcing project ?
I guess this COULD have been a good time for R1 to get in some sung imaging in the modern style, Brandy or … well something like Brandy lols, not sure which sung imaging companies would suit R1 at the moment, but theres room for some sung ID’s there, the Vibe / Music4 stuff of it’s time was IMHO a class product.
April 18, 2012 at 2:30 am #83696amigoMemberI’m with Simon-t123. This could all have been produced in-house and saved a lot of money. Must have taken Brandy a while to put together, but am I the only one struggling to hear the musical identity in this package?

April 18, 2012 at 10:18 am #83707IainJohnstonMemberDavid – are you really going to send me “Jingle Sp&m” ?!?!?! Aaaaarrrggghhh!
April 18, 2012 at 4:38 pm #83713gameswizardMemberAm I allowed to say crap? Calling them things jingles is a gross misuse of the word.

I doubt very much that Chris will have these other than for the usual news/sport elements. His Music4 stuff has always been separate from the main package, just like the chart show is.
April 18, 2012 at 5:25 pm #83716UKJinglesMemberThank God for Chris Moyles!
PURE JINGLES…yeah right…..more like PURE VOICEOVERS (with crap effects)
Definition of the word “Jingle”
N “a catchy and rhythmic verse,song, etc”
I rest my case your honourApril 18, 2012 at 5:52 pm #83718MarcMannetjeGuys that is not 100% fair! I think BBC Radio 1 had a really clear briefing, and it wasn’t saying ‘full orchestrated melodic little songs’. It is not MY style but when it works for a modern cutting edge radio station that is exploring the boundaries of todays hitmusic, why not?
These are from Pure and a bit more… musical:
Pure Compilation by MarcWiersApril 18, 2012 at 5:57 pm #83720RobinBlamiresNailed mate. The Pure jingles are to help the station move along and give a distinct identity, not to please collectors who yearn for the older stuff.
April 18, 2012 at 6:11 pm #83723UKJinglesMemberMy point is you can’t call them Jingles…..Pure or whatever…
They are Voiceovers!
Yes after 10am I do turn over from Radio One to Radio Two!April 18, 2012 at 8:45 pm #83729DavidHemsleyMust be 20 years since I last tuned into Radio One.
April 18, 2012 at 10:47 pm #83735DevawebMemberBut they don’t call them jingles, they call them idents. It doesn’t matter that the company has the word jingles in it. They used to print TV listings in the Radio Times, after all, and the Carphone Warehouse will sell you a phone even if you don’t have a car.

May 2, 2012 at 10:07 pm #83898ratnobMemberListened with interest; not exactly humming them …
May 2, 2012 at 10:22 pm #83899mbMemberhmmmm they outsourced doing some idents. A good producer could have done something similar in house. I can’t help but think they are ceatively a bit dull, but then so was Ra – Dee – Ohhhh – One. I don’t like this style of imaging.
May 2, 2012 at 10:41 pm #83903GrahamCollinsI haven’t bothered to listen. I just know they’ll make me cross and want stay up half the night ranting on about how awful they are on some obscure hobbyist’s forum…….
May 7, 2012 at 5:12 pm #84023tom_hI think this style of imaging works well.
I can’t exactly imagine Radio 1 having sung jingles now, especially with how modern music has ‘developed’, they fit the station sound well. It’s just a shame they also coincided with the new voiceovers on the news jingles which sound crap.
Does anybody know who made the new chart imaging? (sorry if this has already been mentioned).
