Steve England talks about his career on the pirate ships… and of course jingles. A really good listen, made by old boss David Lloyd

Steve was very kind to me as a young collector, I remember the first cassettes he sent me in the post (I still have them)- Nonstop Power, Hot KIIS, On the Coast and On Target. I did a days work experience and came home with some JAM box cards (I still have them!)- Warp Factor, Best Show, Future Flow etc. Years later in 95 I was lucky enough to join David at Alfasound to watch some Lincs FM packages being recorded and when David left to join the Radio Authority I got to select the packages in 97 and 99- I was having the time of my life.

The interview manages to answer a fair few questions posed on this very site, Re: Muff Murfin and David Arnold.

An hour well spent, and rather sweet in places.

            Thanks for posting Duncan.

I first met Steve when I was at Metro – not face to face – but via a landline booked to send ONE commercial from Manchester to Newcastle. The ‘GPO’ said you had to book a minimum of 1 hour (!) so we spent the other 59 minutes talking/ sending PAMS jingles back and forth to each other!

He was amazed I’d got PAMS jingles for Metro ~ I was amazed at his (already) impressive knowledge and jingle collection. He thought I was Dutch because of the ‘Groat’ surname.

When I put an audition tape into Colin ‘Wally’ Walters at Piccadilly in 1976 Steve told me I’d ‘got the job’ even BEFORE the interview, as Colin ‘loved the tape’. Which by the way was me doing a Radio 1 format – with PAMS jingles, as I had not got the first Radio 1 JAM at that stage. I believe Steve was the first person in Britain to get a copy of Priority One?

To go full circle – I’m STILL getting early JAM as we bought this LogoSet classic last year! It works BRILLIANTLY with a variety of song tempos.
