This is really sad news. I first found out as a result of a Twitter from Geoff Barton. Although I am not as active as half of you on Jinglemad and no where near as active as David was I still feel a loss. Ive never met him but like all of us here he shared a love of a hobby that not many outsiders understand so when someone from this…….unusual group passes it hits us all. He was very knowledgable on JAM and shared some fine audio over the years I have been a member. He’ll be a loss to us all but more importantly to his friends and family, especially at this time of year.
December 11, 2012 at 12:37 am #87456jinglejoeMemberShocked! So sad indeed. Always a gentleman.
What a damper on this holiday season.
Rest in peace, Dave.
joe cDecember 11, 2012 at 1:28 pm #87463MikeHowardI never met David, but am shocked and saddened by this terrible news.
My deepest thoughts and prayers are with his family.–Mike
December 11, 2012 at 2:21 pm #87464JelleMemberWe too are very sad that David passed away. We traded some jingles from the early nineties ’till recently and he really triggered the love for jingles – it is a shock his life has ended so suddenly. He will be missed by a lot us. Warm memories! Thank you, David.
Jelle Boonstra & Benno Roozen (Society of Radiojingles and themes)December 11, 2012 at 3:57 pm #87465Rik ScottI’ve just logged on for the first time in a while and this news has just stopped me in my tracks.
Like everyone else on here I’ve traded jingles with David and looked forward
to receiving some little treats in the post. I hope he received the same amount of pleasure with the stuff I sent him.
You’ll be missed.
RikDecember 12, 2012 at 12:05 am #87472jlehmannI also never met David, or directly communicated with him much, but I always enjoyed his great contributions to this board. May he rest in peace.
December 12, 2012 at 4:02 am #87475craigrussell100Terrible news…I only traded with David a couple of times this year, but he was a legend on this site and in the jingle world as well. I have an email with Jon Wollfert I need to respond too about jingles we just received at the station today. I will pass the sad news on to him if he hasnt already seen it here. Too young too soon…
December 12, 2012 at 3:48 pm #87484wiggersEverything I wanted to say, has already been said. R.I.P.
December 12, 2012 at 4:46 pm #87486bulger23It’s been a while since I’ve been here to contribute or partake in the great jingle discussions, and sadly I log on to find a true gem to the world of radio is gone. Moreover, a family man. It was never my fortune to see David in person, but I got to know him on here and through countless emails, as many of you have, and his conversations were amazing. We traded many jingles back and forth for a while and it was he who finally helped me save some jingles from an old cart. Thank you David, for what you brought to this world. It was a true honor. No doubt we will meet some day and be able to enjoy more of those hits between the hits. God bless to his family and closest friends.
December 13, 2012 at 6:10 am #87491TaterStudWow. I felt like somebody took all of the air out of the room when I read this.
David, although never meeting face to face, was a good friend in this little world that we all share. His contributions to the our community (and the world) are immeasurable.

December 13, 2012 at 8:35 pm #87495ratnobMemberDavid’s funeral is tomorrow:
4th December 2012
BARRAS (Hebburn, formerly of South Shields) Suddenly on, December 4th, aged 49 years, David. A very loving partner of Carol. Doting dad of Jack. Much loved son of Lydia and the late Gordon. Deeply loved brother and brother-in-law of Angela and Mark. Special Big Uncle D of Tamar, Rachel and Dan. Will be sadly missed by all his loving family. Family and friends to meet at South Shields Crematorium on, Friday December 14th at 1.00 pm. Family flowers only, donations in lieu of flowers to Cancer Research. A collection will be made after the service, David will be resting at Peter Johnson Funerals, 108 Imeary Street.December 13, 2012 at 11:35 pm #87500tyty21shocked? yes! i’m proud to have known dave as a jingle fan, in fact, i have, and still deem him a DHD, die-hard dallas fan. usually, i’d be the one who’d keep him and all of us jam fans in the know of any new stations that are using jam, and he’d gladly roll a few hours worth of material. we did e-mail, i remember telling him what fun it would be to meet in person. i’d fly out to london if he’d pick me up at heathro, if he came to LA, i’d pick him up at either LAX or union station. i even said it would be fun to do the drive from LA to vegas, just the guys, and we’d most likely listen to jingles all the way there! it’s gonna be hard to believe, but there’s nobody to fill his shoes, but i’d gladly take second. from one jam fan to another, i will try to keep the barras legacy going, if you guys would help out!
RIP, good guy!December 14, 2012 at 10:01 am #87503LenGroatGeoff thank you for the details which I was very sad to read.
I’d like to make a donation to Cancer in David’s memory and I wonder if it would be nice if those who also wanted to made it together so it was sent via JingleMad? I’m sure his family would appreciate that. Colin Ridley has contacted me and told me he sent a personal card to David’s mother so I’m sure we could easily arrange this via Roy?
I was also shocked to realise that David must have been just 12 when he first contacted me at Metro. I feel sad now that I never met him but I left the north-east in 1977.
It’s good to know that his deep love of the jingle business was fired-up when he was so young and gave him so much pleasure.
RIP
Len
December 14, 2012 at 11:30 am #87505mbMemberThere are days on JingleMad that are deeply saddening, The loss of the jingle greats and collectors – because like a lot of hobbies we share a passion that others don’t always get and finding someon you can have a hour long conversation with about Turbo Z cut 26 for the first time and coming out as a jingle collctor and that there ARE others.
Without being disrespectful may David rest in “Hot Rocking, flame throwing, all hit, music powered” peace.December 14, 2012 at 4:35 pm #87506Mark_PaxtonMemberI really am speechless at this sad news. It was always a pleasure to chat and trade jingles with him and the jingle community won’t be the same. I’d like to echo the sentiments of others jinglemadders – He was extremely generous, a man of his word and a total gentleman. Condolences to his loved ones and friends. Mark P
December 15, 2012 at 2:18 am #87510TServo2049I read about this and I suddenly went hot/cold. I was not expecting to read that David Barras is no longer with us. It is so sad to see him go – I’m not a big collector, but when I was more into jingles, I traded enough with him that I continuously got thanked by name up to the end.
My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and I hope that his massive collection passes into good hands who can take care of it.
December 16, 2012 at 10:55 pm #87540jr2479Wow, just terrible news. Rest in peace David. Like everyone else here, I never met David but he was most generous in trading with me when I had little to offer in return.
December 18, 2012 at 6:32 am #87546AdminI have been given permission to share a paragraph from a series of emails I’ve been having with one of David’s friends who attended the funeral.
“The family printed some of the tributes from Jinglemad in the order of service and Angela spoke with real understanding of Dave’s near obsession with Jingles and radio. The Jam song and your montage were played. That really raised a smile from me and a few others as a lot of the older mourners had a “wtf” moment!”
December 20, 2012 at 4:10 am #87570brlmediawords can not even begin to describe how i feel after reading of David’s loss. i am not active on the forums by any means, but had some email communication with David earlier this year. i am a big top of the hour jingle freak, and after some great discussions David was so kind to flood my gmail account with cuts, montages, of the sort , and I remember how kind he was, and a man so passionate about the hobby we all love so much. he will be missed dearly, but i am sure he would want all of us to continue to do what we LOVE.. continue to talk, trade, eat, sleep, and breath jingles. God bless you David..
December 20, 2012 at 9:42 am #87569kolossMemberI am absolutely gutted hearing this news. My condolences to his family;
We had been communicating in the past months and I was to send him some things that, miraculously he did not have and was interested to get. I was tied up with my business & things and he reminded me “family and work come FIRST before this jingle melarky…”
God bless David
December 20, 2012 at 6:05 pm #87572glenAmen!
December 24, 2012 at 11:58 am #87637Good Time OldieThis is so, so sad, I couldn’t believe it when I read it.
I can’t add anything to all the wonderful kind words and tributes (so many) but I felt I had to pop by and pay my respects to a very helpful, approachable, knowledgeable and generous guy who has help me so much in the past.
I can just see David and Rob T (another wonderful jinglemadder no longer with us sadly) pestering Heaven FM for a dub of it’s jingles.
Thank you and God bless Mr B, like alot of people on here, I will miss you buddy
January 7, 2013 at 3:04 am #87947Velvet_VoiceSadly, I appear to be the first to have broken the news on David’s Facebook wall of the rumour (as it was on the 6th December) of his untimely passing. We shared a great appreciation for jingles, especially JAM, and if you were looking for a top quality copy of anything jingle-related – whether audio or video, rest assured David would probably have it! You’re sadly missed David. Hopefully you’re up there basking in Heaven FM’s JAM re-sings!

January 7, 2013 at 3:06 am #87948Velvet_VoiceI seem to be the first to hear the sad news that David has passed away, I heard from a friend of his on FB.
January 7, 2013 at 3:06 am #87949Velvet_VoicePossibly me then.
