There is absolutely nothing I can add that hasn’t already been said. I can relate to every story of emails being exchanged and how he helped new collectors. A true gent in every way.
My deepest sympathies to his family at what should be a special time of year.December 6, 2012 at 8:00 pm #87361GrahamCollinsI’m afraid I swore loudly when I heard this news – life just isn’t fair and the world is a lesser place without David. Generous to a tee, a fountain of knowledge and with an eye for detail. Great qualities in anyone. A truly sad day.
RIP Barras
December 6, 2012 at 8:37 pm #87362PPMI was really shocked to hear this news. I never met David but we traded material a couple of times for which I was really grateful. I say traded but the truth is I don’t think he ever asked for anything in return from me. His collection was so vast I doubt there was anything I had that he didn’t possess already.
His enthusiasm for this hobby came across in every message he posted on this site.
May he rest in peace.
December 6, 2012 at 8:42 pm #87363dianablanton1984MemberDavid Barras will be sadly missed…
December 6, 2012 at 8:47 pm #87364cosgrovebmSo saddened and shocked this morning when I opened my web browser and learned of David’s passing. I can’t put into words how generous he has been to me over the years. Always willing to go the extra mile for you. Don’t have something to trade that isn’t already in his vast collection? No problem. He’d put together a montage of cuts from a package you had a hankering for.
Being from the States, I’d often share with him a story or two about why I was interested in a particular station, or package or cut… And he was always interested and would, in return, share his knowledge about particular bits of jingle oddity.
A great loss for the jingle community and the world at large. My thoughts and prayers with his family and close friends.
b-coz
December 6, 2012 at 9:02 pm #87365MarcMannetjeDavid was one of those guys who always shared his love for jingles. My sincere condolences to his beloved ones. May you rest in piece, David…
December 6, 2012 at 9:09 pm #87366IanFThis is very sad news. I never knew David but had respect for him and his jingle knowledge. He will be missed.
My thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
December 6, 2012 at 9:11 pm #87367RobinBlamiresA fantastic contributor to the site with an unmatchable enthusiasm for radio and jingles.
Condolences to family and friends.
December 6, 2012 at 9:12 pm #87368jkthedjLike many around here, I never knew David Barras personally (Save for a time or two when I was able to trade a rare jingle package from him), but the impact of his love of jingles certainly reverberated to the four corners of the earth. I think it’s safe to say that Barras turned a lot of people (Especially those of the digital generation) on to the hobby of collecting & montaging jingles, Especially over the past few years in particular. Near the end of my most recent montage, I credited Barras (Among the other, equally dedicated collectors) as one of the people who inspired me to not only collect & compile jingles, but to also appreciate them for what they Really are; Six-second Symphonies…pieces of music that may go overlooked by many, but to the rest of us, it is a work of art that we can’t help but admire whenever we hear them.
He will be missed, but more than that, he will be greatly remembered for all he has done for us.
Godspeed, David Barras……Godspeed…
December 6, 2012 at 9:23 pm #87369GazzaSuch sad news to hear that one of the true gents of this obscure little hobby of ours is no longer with us.
Rest in peace Mr B.December 6, 2012 at 9:33 pm #87370Jeffrey T. MasonMemberNeal Bowden mentioned that David’s “best day” was his 10+ hour visit to JAM in 2004. I’m so proud and lucky to have been there with him that day. (I’m third from the left in that photo.)
While that visit to Dallas was the first time I had ever met David (or Neal) face-to-face, we had shared stories, airchecks and jingles for a number of years. What a warm and tender soul. His generosity was known across the globe! I’m know I’m not the only one who received huge packages of jingles in the mail from David – back before FTP sites were commonplace.
I am grief-stricken. As soon as I heard the news, I wanted to hear David’s voice. So, I pulled out my “Happy Birthday JAM” CD from 2004. In case you’ve never heard it, enjoy the kind and peaceful voice of a truly wonderful person. We’ll miss you, Mr, Barras!
December 6, 2012 at 9:41 pm #87371SpoonsThere’s not much more I can add to what has already been brilliantly said. But David’s contribution to this site has been immense.
He was one of the guys who would surprise you with an email out of the blue with a link to a full package which you ‘might just be interested in’
So generous and knowledgable about this crazy little world of ours.
Jeffrey – thanks for posting the JAM 30th CD track. I am honoured to have appeared on such a landmark CD alongside someone as influential as Barras.
Thoughts with his family – such a sad loss. We will miss his enthusiasm and knowledge massively.
December 6, 2012 at 9:53 pm #87373Harry.TSo sad to hear of David’s passing, I don’t be around the site that often, but when I have posted in the past one of the first to reply would have been David so you will be sadly missed.
Gods speed David.Thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
December 6, 2012 at 11:04 pm #87374LenGroatIt’s a wonderful tribute to David that in just a few hours there are 38 posts here… it’s also very sad as it makes us realise that one week someone is here, the next week they may be gone…. it emphasises my belief that we MUST always live for ‘now’.
I sent his family a copy of this topic and his sister Angela has replied already:
“Please say a big thank you to everyone in the Jingle world who’s written such lovely tributes to David. We are deeply touched.
We are all still numbed by what’s happened and will miss Dave so much. Thanks again.”
David lived his ‘jingle dream’ fully, for many years, even spending hours at THE place that is most special to many of us, something that was unimaginable way back in 1975. His ‘jingle life’ went right back to the start of commercial radio in Britain, and he never lost touch with me after my Metro days. I shall miss his fervent enthusiasm on here but I hope between us all we can keep this site he loved so much as interesting and busy as he always made it….
December 7, 2012 at 12:23 am #87375StarbrelzMemberDavid was the first JMer I traded with. Wish I knew him better. My condolences to his family & friends.
December 7, 2012 at 12:46 am #87377ejjeffMemberIt’s a truly sad day in jingle land. I too traded with David a few times over the last few years. Those of us in the jingle world share a passion that others outside will never understand. I’m glad we had the chance to share the camaraderie with David.
December 7, 2012 at 3:07 am #87378rock_n_richieMemberEven though David and I e-mailed just a few times and traded jingles as well, I was always amazed by his list of jingles that he sent me, you could tell he had a passion for jingles…. Sad to hear of his passing.. Condolences to his family.
December 7, 2012 at 4:15 pm #87380pvankleiMemberThat is very sad news of David’s passing.
David was a very nice person and always willing to help with trading jingles.
My condolences to family and friends.Peter

December 7, 2012 at 6:27 pm #87385star tetleyA wonderful jingle enthusiast who will be sadly missed. RIP.
December 7, 2012 at 7:06 pm #87386tophour_brianMemberI only traded with David a couple times, but he was incredibly generous and I always knew that if there was a jingle out there, David probably had it. A sad day, to be sure. Rest well, sir.
December 7, 2012 at 7:51 pm #87387OnyxPaulMemberWhat a shock, such sad news. David was such a considerate and generous guy and will be greatly missed. My sincere condolences to his family & loved ones.
December 7, 2012 at 8:22 pm #87388AdminI have just received the details of David’s funeral :
1pm Friday 14th December at South Shields Crematorium.
http://www.southtyneside.info/article/11359/crematoriumI know it’s not possible for most JingleMad members to attend, but everybody is welcome.
December 7, 2012 at 8:42 pm #87389UKJinglesMemberI am totally shocked at this SAD News…..
David and I started Trading back in the Early 1990’s (Via cassette and typewriter!) and even up to this year if I had a question about Jingles he could normally give me the answer and of course the ongoing debate over the “E- Word” (Embargoed!)
I’m going to miss you David but I hope the Choir of Angels are singing your name up there!!God Bless You,
Pete Wilson
