Yes, it was heard on 106, from June 1998, replacing the jingles that the station had launched with (as Radio 106 FM) in September 1997. These had been rehashed when the station was renamed Century in April 1998.
I've got some examples of the Denver package somewhere, I'll dig some tapes out tomorrow!

MemberNot got any tapes but I definitely remember Century 106 East Mids having the same jingles. It comes in loud and clear in Wolverhampton! Their Breakfast was resung as 'Astley in the morning'. Aren't some of these cuts being used on The Severn in Shrewsbury now?
I always thought the Radio 106 Alfasound jingles were very good for their time. I was quite disapointed when it went Century.

MemberI'm the first to admit there's some large gaps in my Jingle Collecting “History”
– but I didn't know that Radio 106 ever had jingles never mind ALfa!All I ever heard was a test transmission I picked up while passing through the area years ago – and it seemed to be for a “classical music” format! Or was that going to be something completely different?

MemberSorry! – I'm talking total cobblers!
Found the “106” audio in an Archive folder – it wasn't “106” but “101.6” – but for “historical interest”
here's the “air-byte”, and note the “logo” of the piece of classical music used as an instrumental jingle!http://www.4shared.com/file/30781082/6c6b72ae/Wixy1360-Radio101point6-NOT-106.html
This particular station/RSL/trial must pre-date the Classic FM national network – my file is datestamped as 1992

MemberI think you have something very rare there. I think that's a pre national 'test' version of Classic broadcast just from Sutton Coldfield identing itself as Radio 101.6. I'm sure I've read about it somewhere before.
I think the Radio 106 ALfa cuts were released on that Steve England ALfa 1997 CD that was out for a short time that had the last few things that Alfasound ever made. I may have it wrong but was the last thing they ever released for Wessex FM?

MemberThanks for the info about “101.6” Andy.
Its from one of my old “Summer Holiday” aircheck cassettes – lots of small snippets of stations I'd made on taking the family on holiday, in those days usually down to the south coast of England – with loads of good ILR stations to listen to (and sometimes quickly record while in motorway services car parks!) on the way up/down the A1/M1 or M5/M6 etc.
Nowadays – they all sound the same – and we go straight to the Continent from Scotland by ferry – but I still tape the locals stations in France, etc!

Cheers for the replies, so it seems 106 did indeed air the custom package. If anyone's any samples I'd love to hear them. In fact if they started airing them in June '98 then that's before 105 in the North West had even launched. Here's a few later JAM cuts I've found for Century 106 ('99ish?)

Vaguely related this – what's the most recent *custom* package JAM has done for a UK station? Surely it's not as long ago as the Century 1998 package, is it?

Don't quote me though. I thought the latest UK custom in that vein was for Saga FM. That's getting on for four years ago now and Saga FM doesn't exist.

I think it was the other way around, the Century packages were 100% JAM as shown on the CD cover below.
The SAGA packages were (I think) a joint project, with Steve England tracks, and JAM vocals. Though they did also have a few JAM re-sings.
The Century packages probably were the last 100% JAM custom in the UK. The Magic network's “Make It Magic” used JAM vocals, as did BBC Essex in 2003. Can't think of any others…
The MNA stations are using re-sings of some of the cuts yes, though when I've listened on-line they don't seem to be used very well. The top of hour on one of the stations seems hacked up.
