I’ve been playing around with ProTools and have come up with possibly the most comprehensive montage available online of Radio York jingles from the fantastic David Arnold 1988 custom package.
The sound quality varies, and a couple of the mixes are a little dodgy, on account of the fact that (a) I’ve taken the IDs from various sources and (b) some of ’em were already mixed together. I’ve re-ordered everything too, so that each cut and its mixouts flows in a more structured order… news/traffic/sports/general IDs/beds/oldies jingles… in that order.
It’s (almost) the entire package complete with the recently uploaded news and traffic cuts (thanks to Stuart Barrett for supplying ’em and David Hemsley for hosting them on jingleark.co.uk).
Interesting facts: the package was commissioned by Chris Choi (now ITN Consumer Affairs Correspondent), who worked at Radio York prior to joining Radio Leeds as Programme Organiser (where he commissioned the excellent WMCA/Z100/etc resings for them). Rumour has it that the package was written by a North Yorkshire-based composer, produced in the UK by David Arnold Music and sung in the States by the world-famous Dallas vocal group. However, rather than booking them through Century 21, who DA was representing, he apparently booked them via JAM… odd! Another rumour circulating at the time was Radio 1’s desire to have the traffic cut for themselves, but Radio York said “no… we’re keeping it”! As an aside, whilst Radio York never received any complaints re their news jingle, when Radio Leeds aired their 1990 news ident featuring a recorded time signal, then-MD John Jefferson scrapped it after a listener whinged about it being played out at the wrong time… some people have too much time on their hands!
Download the 192kbps MP3 (a large 20 meg file!!) from http://www.danakers.homechoice.co.uk
Finally, if you haven’t yet heard the UK versions of the IQ Beats demos (recently distributed to stations all across Europe), you can hear them at http://www.danakers.co.uk. Packages I was lucky enough to produce demos for include The Wireless Group, BBC Radio Leeds and WKTU New York… shame they’ve gone back to Reelworld. Hmpfh!
Enjoy!

MemberNice One Dan……
Good Quality as well (192 k)
The JAM Dallas Vocals have always given that little bit more nicer sound than all the other Dallas companies……..
What is Jon’s secret??
Is it as tight a secret as the recipe for Coca Cola? 😆July 12, 2005 at 4:42 am #16733danjamesuk
Thanks Vince, Pete… glad you enjoyed ’em.
Pete, I see what you mean about the vocals – JAM vocals are very rich; it’s all down to the production though. They use the same singers as TM Century. TMCI produced some great vocals in their time too, but when the Century 21 merge happened, things became a little flat. Obviously there are exceptions, but if you listen to some of the earlier TM Century cuts (resings especially), you’ll hear the vocals have been mixed down in mono, which (apparently) helps to disguise any inaccuracies in the singing!

David BarrasThe main Mercury package was actually 1984 with add-ons being produced in 1992.

I would say it sounds like Steve England
July 18, 2005 at 12:00 pm #16784danjamesuk
Can’t imagine it would be Steve. The package had nothing to do with him, as it was bought through David Arnold, with vocals produced in Dallas by JAM. Bizarre, considering he was still representing Century 21 at the time!

Did you know that a few of the early Carlin production CD’s have old David Arnold tracks on them – A few that spring to mind come from GWR’s 85 pkg, Radio West and Humbersides 84 set, and Cumbria’s 88 pkg! oh and a shortened version of the Invicta 84 theme!
Another point of interest (perhaps) is that BBC Newcastles 89 Jam pkg was sorted through David Arnold (before the alfasound/jam collaboration).

Yes I asked Steve england about this and he told me
Sounds like a nice package – and it sounds like David’s tracks – not sure if the tracks were recorded in Dallas – many of them seem to be based on old Pams cuts (like the smooth sailing cut). David did do a couple of packages at JAM before Jon decided to do a deal with me.
