Chris Reay, senior producer station sound at BBC Radio 2, just told me they still haven't chosen the new producer for the overall sound of R2.
The station still is in the process of commissioning and choosing the right party to produce the new station image. As you could read here on JM a few months ago, the BBC published an open briefing for production companies and asked to create a short demo that reflects the philosophy of the station.
The pitch was closed february 11th. I am very curious who pitched for this big client. Does anyone know?
Cheers!
April 2, 2011 at 4:49 pm #78387IainJohnstonMemberIts always said that “decisions made by committees are the worst way of ever deciding anything – the best way to make solid, fast and reliable decisions is to have a dictator in charge, with sole authority to decide, act, and get things done“(albeit a benign dictator, with plenty of deep knowledge & expertise in their subject)!
Wonder what Johnny Beerling must think of this post-Ross/Brand era of Radio Two jingle “commissioning“!!!
:^)April 2, 2011 at 4:57 pm #78388MarcMannetjeAgreed. Radiomakers just do their job on intuition, feeling, gut. You instantly recognize a good jingle. At least, I hope so…
It's the same with the Jack-format. Even though anyone with a bit of a musical feel would say the format wasn't really a format and just grew because it offered an alternative, hundreds of radio companies turned oldies stations into Jack. At radio companies guys in suits decide. But they don't understand the core, the DNA of radio anymore.
I can't tell if this is the case at the BBC, and to be honest I can only judge when I hear the new package. Let's hope for the best!
April 2, 2011 at 11:44 pm #78393mumossI'd still like to know what happened to the supposed new Newsbeat imaging for Radio 1. Was supposed to go on-air September last year, went through the whole commissioning process, but no sign of it yet…
April 3, 2011 at 7:58 am #78396GrahamCollinsHopefully someone at R1 has questioned the point of wasting money on new Newsbeat imaging. The beds all sound pretty much the same and are usually played so far back in the mix it's just a noise. The only difference being the attitude of the VO.

As far as I'm aware there's nothing in the brief that says when they want them on air; I think it'll much more likely be July or August (maybe later) – but don't quote me on that one!
