Now here’s a tough one. We all know how good Pams/Jams were for R1 but does anyone have a clean set of the Pepper Tanner “It’s what’s happening” series that R1(and R2) used in the late 60’s or early 70’s please? I’ve been after them for years and if someone can post them, then others may realise how good P/T were – These were just dynamite, full of energy.
R1 also had some cuts, around the same time I think, which sounded like an electronic door bell effect (naff description but I can’t think of anything else) and they had lines like “Good time, happy sound of music” and “With the soulful sound”. Does anyone have these or know what they were please. Thanks,

I have posted a few downloads and collected a few bits, but how on earth did you guys collect so much stuff pre-internet?February 11, 2005 at 6:18 pm #15256UKJinglesMemberIan wrote: I am in total awe of you guys.

February 11, 2005 at 7:23 pm #15257nigelThanks Pete and Barras – I’ll go through both your lists and will be in touch.
What’s the name of the “Doorbell” set so I know what to look for please?Do you think these are worthy of posting for all to hear?
As I read from an American on one of the trails, most jingles are from Auntie Beeb’s latter days so I guess there is a whole new audience to the earlier stuff (although those Pams ’67 cuts have been flogged to death).
I’ve been collecting for years but from first looks at the lists, I doubt if I’ve got anything you havent – I always thought Norman B had the biggest collection but I’m now begining to wonder. (and we’re not sad, just focused!).
Thanks again,
Nigel.
February 11, 2005 at 11:27 pm #15260DavidHemsleyNorman has a very small list compared to some of us.
The Pepper Tanner packjage you require is avaialble to buy from http://www.kenr.com – including the instrumental tracks.
February 12, 2005 at 3:03 am #15263TServo2049One BBC Pepper-Tanner package that has NOT shown up on a Ken R. release (and which I haven’t seen on Ken’s reference list either) is the “Easy Listening” package for Radio 2. I have never heard it…only heard of it…

“Easy Listening” was an MOR package that Tanner produced. I remember getting into a discussion with one of the local Program Directors in the early/mid-seventies about jingle companies. His comment: You’re programming Top-40 … go to PAMS; but if you want jingles for a true Middle Of The Road station… go to Pepper-Tanner. The station bought PENTHOUSE, EASY LISTENING and went on to be the pilot station for EASY GOING and another Tanner pkg. Despite the whiny voices on a lot of the P/T stuff… the MOR stuff sounded pretty good.
Somewhere around here I still have the “Easy Listening” demo in the red P/T box.

February 12, 2005 at 2:31 pm #15265UKJinglesMemberTracy is absolutely right…..
“Easy Listening” was one of the best PEPPER TANNER Packages
as was the later TANNER “Simple And Free” No Whiny voices on those like a lot of their stuff and quite a lot of todays efforts! 😆February 12, 2005 at 4:12 pm #15266ratnobMember“Simple & Free” was wonderful, one of my favourites, though it used the Dallas singers rather than the usual Memphis crowd, I seem to recall.
I’m assuming everyone has now got the “It’s What’s Happening” cuts, but if not you can download them here as a high quality 11.5MB m4a file:

EASY LISTENING utilized Memphis vocals. SIMPLE & FREE; WFIL BIG D; WLS and a few others used Dallas vocals under the Thunder Productions moniker.
The whiny voices were P/T’s trademark sound… as much as I didn’t appreciate it. The real trademark to the MOR packages was the plush orchastrations. Sometimes their mixing left a little to be desired… but that’s life. I’ll have to dig out WHYN-FM’s Easy Listening pkg and post some of the stereo cuts.
While they were purchasing Tanner for the FM… the AM was using PAMS Series 29, 32, 33, 40, a couple of PAMS Custom grids, Cuff’s Image II and PAMS 44 (and later, others). Their leadered masters are sitting on the shelf behind me. 😆

I’ll post Pepper/Tanner’s Easy Listening within the hour. In fact, I’m dumping it into CoolEdit as I type. I’m create a .mp3 and post it shortly. I had forgotten that the demo is MONO. Shame. I think I have the backing tracks around here somewhere, too. They’re also mono.

February 12, 2005 at 10:09 pm #15276ratnobMemberMeanwhile, for no reason at all except we’re in a Tanner frame of mind, here’s some country cuts for 1470 WSAN ..
February 12, 2005 at 10:32 pm #15277topcatThe demo is uploaded. We have to wait for the powers that be to review and post them. I should have just put ’em up on my server.

I’m not seeing the upload to review and approve Tracy in the waiting area. Can you please upload them again to the downlaod area or indeed to you own server if you so wish.
Thanks.

Hmmm… That’s wierd. I uploaded it to the “Classic Jingles” area. No biggie. I’ve posted the file…. Pepper/Tanner’s EASY LISTENING Demo (Mono)… on the server at:

February 13, 2005 at 5:43 pm #15283TServo2049I listened to the demo…for all the hoo-hah Tracy made about Pepper-Tanner’s “whiny” voices, this package (at least, the demo) doesn’t have them. Of course, this was one of the packages which was at least demoed with Dallas vocals. Memphis vocals WERE extremely whiny…as you can hear for yourself on the Radio 2 versions Pete posted.
Did you know that through a good part of the 60s, Pepper-Tanner operated a branch in Dallas? And that they were at one point located on Regal Row, which later housed TM for years and years? You do now…
I’ve become quite good at figuring out whether a Pepper-Tanner package is from Dallas or Memphis, as I can tell the vocal styles apart quite well. (Clue: The Dallas vocals sound like other Dallas jingles of the time. )
The Now Sound, The Fun One, Odyssey ’70, and several others were also Dallas-made packages. (Unfortunately, in the case of The Now Sound, BBC got it with Memphis singers. What a drag…)
