Here is a wee trip back in time as we jingle folk might say. A long, long time ago, (and I am struggling to actually place the year but it will be early 70’s), but I remember very well looking at an Ad in one of the music papers of the time – Sounds, or Record Mirror, even Melody Maker – anyway, it matters not, but the Ad was offering a ‘professionally’ sung jingle of your name. In my very early days of jingle collecting, I thought this was a great thing as I was starting to be involved in Hospital Radio at this time. Now this is decades before email and the internet, so I sent off a letter with instructions and what name I wanted sung… and a postal order (some folk might wonder what that is) for the cost of this jingle to the company concerned. I waited several weeks, but that was fine as these things I know take time. but after around five weeks, I wrote a letter to them asking how things were going with my jingle. Eventually I received a reply, again by post, to inform me that, sadly, their tape machine had broken down :-( and had been sent away for repair, so they could not complete my order. So I was given my money back, whatever the cost was, again by postal order and that was the end of that. Now, I always remember the name of the company and am just curious if any of JM’s more ‘senior’ members remember a company called H&L Jingles?. I think they were based in Manchester or Cheshire. Two other companies of that era were Manchester Mix, from whom I still have a cassette with a jingle cut on there, and East Anglian Productions run by someone called Ray Anderson if memory serves me right. I bought a lot of stuff from EAP. They used to flog a lot of PAMS stuff with the station name edited out. Years later when I heard the originals with the station name, I had been so used to hearing those edits, that I found it hard to hear the originals. Of course that was back in the time when I thought I was the only guy in the world who listened to jingles as a hobby. I soon learned.

Lets just say a LOT of EAP’s actual station package dubs away back then (overseas stations, not UK I emphasise ) came from … me.
At 5p a jingle, per dub. Whatever he flogged them on for, and how much he made, I’ve no idea.
But for me, it all paid eventually for my 2 Ferrograph Series Sevens, which now lie defunct in the garage, should anyone be interested in “breaking for spares”!

Never came across H&L, but the good old “Evans & Martin Frontal Sound” dared to try something unheard
of for UK non-broadcast / hospital radio etc at the time. And EAP 7-inch samplers (vinyl) still lurk in some
        of our collections.

Ray Anderson is STILL today behind certain “waterry wireless” activity not a million miles from Frinton,
completely legally of course with RSL and community licences, and (not sure) 648 metres (?)

I wonder whether this was B&L Studios, based in Dartford. They worked briefly as UK agents for CPMG. In fact I had some personal cuts and voice-overs produced, when I was around 16.

They were, of course, terrible. In fact, I’ll inflict them on you later. But the guy who ran the campy – Barry Charnley (I think) – was a good guy, now (I think) a professional photographer.

            Yes Geoff is right…
B and L DJ Studios were based in Bexleyheath, Kent and ran by Barry Charnley and back in the late 1970’s (early 1980’s) was the only way to get “American Sung” Personalised Jingles…They were sung by Ben Freedman’s “Buffalo Singers” (Which I believe were also Ken R’s “Northcoast” Singers?)
Also Dave Langer Creative Services was involved as well…

Hi folks. Definitley H and L Jingles. I was sure they were around Cheshire area, but I might have just made that up. I remember the ‘promo’ tape that I received from them. I think the guy who made it had a cold and I’ m sure he recorded the voice over in his toilet. No idea where that tape is now. It was the jingle that was never made. I must let you hear the Manchester Mix jingle once I work out how take it off a cassette.

“once I work out how take it off a cassette”

Ron – Output jack from cassette deck to audio in on PC; plus any reasonable audio editor, free or otherwise,
such as Magix Audio Cleaning Lab (my personal prference) or even the notorious Cool Edit Pro bootleg or
                its modern equivalents.
Don’t use WIndows sound recorder – utter junk.

Or if stuck…send me it in a jiffy bag!

PS – Geoff/Pete – I STILL have a couple of Barry Charnley’s “PAMS” demo cassettes lurking here somewhere :^)

Thanks Ron. A useful reminder of how deprived we were in our UK craving for great jingles.

Which is why some of us deprived souls started writing off to stations in other countries to mooch
3&3/4 and 7.5 IPS dubs of things other than the tiny amount of ex-pirate stations & ex-R1 stuff
that endlessly circulated here – and long before the legendary “Bob Dinan” appeared on the scene ;^)

[ …and who was this Wolfert character in the States doing the same as us…? without us knowing :^) ]
