The 1987 package is a composite. Most of the package is made up of resings from KZZP (also released in '87 for the station in Phoenix,AZ),but in there are cuts from Good Time Radio,Playin' Favourites,Red Hot and Warp Factor to name just a few…
The very first JAM custom Radio 1 had was “Music Now” in 1982,but both the '84 & '87 packages were composites, with One FM being the next custom being ordered in 1989,and going to air in 1990.

Thanks for that, Bigdave. I had a feeling it was a composite, but wasn't sure -I've never heard the KZZP cuts.
Is any of the KZZP package online anywhere?

Not forgettin Fresh KIIS and Rockin' For America. One of the punchiest and fun packages produced for Radio 1!

Thanks a lot for that, Barras! Gorgeous stuff. Do JAM offer personal cuts for that package, does anyone know?
And thanks for the mention of the other packages, Robin. Somehow I'd managed to miss listening to those ones! Heard them now, though.

Yeah KZZP is on the package index on the JAM website
July 17, 2007 at 7:43 pm #31406Bigdave
And for your musical delight,John, here's the demo of KZZP from JAM ! – 4.3mb

A useless fact about the 1987 package is that Jon Wolfert aimed for the sessions to be the first recorded at Parkdale Drive. However, due to the delays in building the new JAM studio complex, the vocal sessions were done at January Sound.
This picture from the JAM website shows the vocal group behind the package….
(left-to-right) Kay Sharpe, John Hooper, Chris Kershaw, Cheryl Cleavinger, Mike Collier, Radio 1's Johnny Beerling holding Melissa Wolfert (age 3), Radio 1's Dave Atkey and Jon Wolfert.
Just been listening to the whole of the '87 stuff tonight – great vocals, memorable cuts, and of course, the JAM seal of quality.A classic !

That is absolutely brilliant, Bigdave! Thanks a lot. Such a wonderful package. If I can ever save up enough money, I'm going to have to get some resings for some podcasts I'm involved with. It's a tie between this and Turbo Z as my favourite package, I think.
Last request then – I don't want to just sit here and ask for stuff, but I can't resist this one – could anyone upload the 87 Radio 1 package? I've got a copy here, but it's a pretty bad quality one, unfortunately.

I've got it here – but it's encoded at 320kbs and would mean a 44mb upload – quite a hefty file! – plus the 1988 add ons.
I can snail mail it otherwise,if you want me to pm me.

I have always wondered why a number of cuts are missing from the 1987 package.
Amongst these are the following…'The UK Top 40 In Stereo Fm Britain's Favourite Radio 1' (resing of 'The Official Top 40…')
'Top 30 Album Chart With Gary Davies On Radio 1' (resing of 'Much More Music Across The UK Britain's Favourite Radio 1'')
'Top 30 Album Chart On Radio 1' (resing of 'For You And Me Britain's Favourite Radio 1' and 'Stereo FM Britain's Favourite Radio 1')
They don't appear on the 1988 add on package either.Well not my copy anyway.
!lol

Ah, Steve England may have sent a few copies out of On Target without the cuts resung for Radio 1. I may have a complete copy somewhere.

That would be great as the Demo I have after the intro all the cuts run one after another but the Radio 1 cut is not on itRegards

Having listened to these a bit more, what I find weird is that I much prefer the Radio 1 resings to the original KZZP versions. (Although I love the KZZP versions as well.) The words seem to fit better, and the vocals seem more… rounded. I don't know much about that kind of thing – but is it a larger group, or something?

John, I sat through many sessions at JAM, (and also at TM for our early PAMS for GEM) and can comment on this. It's all to do with 'session magic'. Some days the sessions just take off and FLY…. and it just sounds BETTER.To start with I believe that if the client is in the booth the singers just get more involved in the sessions. Between cuts they invariably start comparing lives since they last met (they've worked together for decades..) As much as they love singing, it's very repetitive so in the middle of a 3 hour session they may flag slightly. I used to ask at that stage to go into the booth to do pics, or make some encouraging comments over the talkback
One key thing is that I always chatted with them between sessions, so they knew a little more about the station they were singing for. This also meant I got to know many of the singers ~ Chris Kershaw who wrote so many good cuts over the decades, (Radio 1 ‘Pied Piper’ and ‘Simple and Free’!) Abby, Judy and Kay who are just a delight, and Jim and Abby about their singing with Vocal Majority.
On newer packages the singers are still getting to know the cuts, and just seem to concentrate more and put 'zest' into their singing. On a composite package (which we always did for Trent/GEM) we were switching to different styles, and varied lyrics, every 20 minutes or so, so different singers took lead (we used Abby for FM, Jackie for AM) and this invigorated the sessions. Today’s jingles seem to HAVE to have the SAME lyrics on every cut ~ goodness knows why ?!
Two factors that probably do not apply now ~ I was fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time in Dallas so we were not under so much pressure, not many of today’s radio execs could devote 14 days to producing jingles for just 4 stations? Finally, we had already flown Jackie Dickson, Johnny & Debbie Hooper and Mike Collier into Britain for 3 Trent/Leicester Sound packages before 1988 so they were friends, and I guess ‘singing for friends’ helps a lot!

Memberwell I did put this together in May 2005. I took a Radio 1 jingle and another version of it for another station and mixed them together to come up with an alternative version to both.
It is in the download section here
