Old Buzz FM jingles from TM

So, I listened to some good Buzz FM jingles on JMR, and that got me thinking.
What TM jingle package did they use back then?

  • Buzz FM had the following (roughly) during it's life as far as I remember.

Buzz FM began broadcasting to Birmingham on 102.4 FM at 8am on Monday 14th May 1990.
Signing off and giving way to Choice FM on January 1, 1995.

During that time, Buzz went through several styles as the management and ownership changed. (To say the least)

    Jingles history:

Buzz FM ( David Arnold custom)
Buzz FM ( MMI / Standard Sound - Package - shared with Jazz FM - not sure which came first)
Buzz FM ( JAM Composite )
Buzz FM - Reused the BUZZ/JAZZ package
Buzz FM - Resing of clyde 1 MMI/SS package with some of the above cuts

I still have a cassette dubbed for me by the station, circa 1994, which was in the SMG (Clyde)
ownership era, and includes some of the Rosko v/o items, and an aircheck.
Basically was the 1992(?) and 1994(?) MMI/Standard Sound packages.
And damn good they were too!

A good wee station in its day ("wee" because of the flea-powered TX that was all they were permitted by the IBA!)

Edit:- quick question - the Jazz FM items - I know they used the news-in, but were there vocal cuts?

Iain - who did this package? Love it! There was a short song too - do you have it?

My understanding is that Muff Murfin did the cuts "in association" with then-TM, and
since Clyde "controlled" Buzz by then many cuts were used on both.

The other package is partly longer cuts, and (IMPO) not as "punchy" as the "Clyde" ones.

Clyde had a LOT of MMI/SS customs for years post-EMIson, and I'm still looking for better
quality dubs of them even to this day.
After MMI, Clyde had their excellent JAM 1993 composite.

(I know that there's other people on JM that have a much better insight into the history of the
    Buzz material than I do!)

I worked at Buzz FM as Commercial Producer and did a lot of the imaging production from just before launch early 1990 to early 1992. So this was during the use of, Buzz FM ( David Arnold custom) and Buzz FM ( MMI Package - shared with Jazz FM).

The David Arnold custom was with Century21. It was the launch package, the cuts were quite dull but very nice vocals (a montage of the cuts, I include here).

The MMI package (The Rhythm of The City) came after the first of many station buy-outs. Rob Jones commissioned it and I was led to believe (and seem to remember) the vocals were recorded at TM. The package was soon after re-sung for Jazz FM, which was then owned by the same holding company as Buzz FM. I did all of the post production on these jingles for Buzz & Jazz FM (the master DATs came back pretty raw & basic). The tracks were pretty good, the vocals were a bit ‘gritty’ for my liking.

I left just before the third owners came, it was a very troubled station.

Tony, Iain is correct this is a MMI/TM custom package from 1991 - its available on MPF Basics 32 (and yes, it includes the mini song)

  • Just as follow up - are the Jazz FM versions extant anywhere?

(I briefly airchecked the station back in that era while in London, but didn't hear anything sung, just the TOH)

Thanks for the information, Mark. Very interesting info.
  • I'd like to hear the Jazz FM versions as well. I only ever heard the news ID when I was in London visiting.
