BBC Radio 1 - "Remember When..." JAM Jingle - 1980.

Does anyone know if the jingle "Remember when you heard this song many years ago" from Radio 1's 1980 package was ever resung for any other stations?
Of all the jingles/montages I've heard over the years, I don't recall ever hearing a resing of it.
Also, was it from any particular JAM package? Or was it a one-off custom for Radio 1?
Thanks.

  • At last a bloody good question worthy of this site gameswizard AND it concerns Jingles......👍
I've got no idea of the answer but still a bloody good question nevertheless! 😂

According to the Master Tape Log for Radio 1's 1980 JAM composite package, the cut in question is “WAKY/10”, but I can’t say that I’ve ever heard the original WAKY version.
  • Thanks Pete :)
And thanks Mark for where the cut originates B)
It would be nice to here the WAKY cut &/or other resings.
  • Hi,
Here are the two versions of the cut. I believe it was from the Tri Star package – but happy to be corrected. :)

  • Just found something on an old Barras file - WAKY - JAM Tri-Star ???
  • Mark!
You've beaten me to it by seconds!

I'd just extracted it from a David Barras "WAKY versus Radio One " comparison montage.
For reference, I'll put the original audio up in a moment - audio quality is..."reference only".

Noting that the R1 version has moog "twiddly bits" to the Radio One logo, and "less brass" than the WAKY.
But no doubt, somewhere "out there" there will be / have been all the mixout versions...

Edit:- on the JAM website, the TriStar package is "Call" to even hear the demo.
    Hmmmm

    Thanks both MarkS & Iain.

    Hmmmm
I previously noticed "CALL" when looking over the demos listed.
11 currently have "CALL" where the blue arrow should be.
I also wonder why those demos are not available to hear...
  • Hodgey...
Is this the (WAKY) demo, deep in your website?

  • Yes, good question gameswizard and a satisfying answer. I occasionally hear the Tri-Star demo when I'm in the car but didn't spot that

The Tri-Star demo on (JAM 4) is an unnarrated demo including 9 cuts, but doesn't include “WAKY/10”.

The "Radio 1 Song 1980" cut is included in the demo though, which is "WAKY/16".

This makes me think that not all the WAKY '79 custom cuts made it to the "Tri-Star" package, unless it was only a "pre-demo" on (JAM 4) and the demo was later expanded?
  • According to the JAM website - ‘There is another way’ - also known as: ‘The JAM Album’ and ‘Tasty Stuff’ featured cuts from the Tri-Star package for WAKY. However, it was originally an LP and the entire album was transferred to CD from the original master tape. Because there was a limit to how much audio you could put on an LP in 1979, the JAM Album did not contain the complete versions of the demos listed.

Found this MP3 of a 16-cut, un-narrated, in-the-clear demo of TriStar on a backup drive.
The cut under discussion IS on this demo. Its the 13th item.

    My file is datestamped 2009.

NB - if Jon W should want this removed from here, no problem
(...its not like I've posted anything lately that has been "removed because of...." !!! o:) )
  • Nice one, Iain, Thank you :)
  • You're welcome, GW !
    :)
  • Does anybody have complete demo?
  • Anyone who has the JAM album from 1979 will have this demo - it's on side 2

That is true, except it isn’t the full demo as most of the demos were reduced to only the narrated presentation section or not all of the cuts in the package were played so that a wider spectrum of package demos fitted onto side 2 of the LP.

The jingle was on the JAM 1980 package.
  • After all this mayhem..It was actually mentioned in the very first post on this thread that it was "from Radio 1's 1980 package" 🤔
