This could be a fun discussion…let’s say the boss walks in with a check for a 20 cut package from JAM and the following guidelines:

      * all the jingles have to be from the classic Z100 packages (Flamethrower, Red Hit, Skywave, Turbo Z, Warp Factor, Z Force, Z World, Z+)
      * One TOH cut only
      * One weather cut only
      * Three specialty cuts (morning show, request, winner, PSA, etc.)
      * The remaining 15 have to be regular cuts

      Which cuts do you choose?

I’d tell the boss we need a larger budget to get all of them!

i would try to explain to the boss that the disco era has passed……

the cash resource would be more wisely used another way.

If that was the case, then I could easily pick 20 of the more rock-leaning cuts from the Z packages.

Really, the cuts I’d pick would depend on the sound and era we were going for, but if it was just a matter of personal favorites:

            Specialty:
            Turbo Z cut 10 (TOH)
            Warp Factor cut 24 (weather)
            Warp Factor cut 16 (morning)
            Warp Factor cut 21 (promo)
Turbo Z cut 15 (specialty show)

            Others:
            Flame Thrower cuts 4, 6, 11
            Warp Factor cuts 3, 7
            Skywave cuts 2, 7
            Turbo Z cut 4, 16
            Z Force cut 10 (sorry Diana B)
            Z World cuts 9, 14
            Z+ cuts 1, 7, 13

If you don’t want to play don’t, but standing at the side of the playground shouting is never attractive

Yeah, for the record, this is as obnoxious and tiresome as the non-stop shots at ReelWorld by other people. Don’t be that guy.

heeehee, but those obnoxious shouts are winning.

and, reel isn’t paying the mortgage off with resing crumbs
                  just saying.

but if this is merely a playground game? well…..go for it.

“Fantasy [ insert topic ]” is a fun part of any and many kinds of hobby forum.

So Gentlemen, can you please keep it that way and kindly let Brian’s topic be explored in the spirit it was intended!

I’m glad you are not choosing jingles for MY station! Your brief posts, with no capital letters (sloppy), likening the Z packages to ‘the disco era’ are ephemeral and a joke. It’s called ‘English’ , please type it with the respect it deserves – or we’ll take it back !

Why do you even bother contributing to a site where Reelworld’s material is largely noticeable for its ABSENCE?

The JAM Z100 packages are full of fun/sharpness/ ‘transitions’ and life – the shouts/ FX /sono add an energy and VARIETY you will not find in Reelworld cuts. They work brilliantly into uptempo and medium tempo pop from the 50s 60s 70s AND 80s….

Ok, joining in the fun, I had a scan through all the packages. This is what I came up with. Tried to vary the selection with short stabs and longer cuts.

TURBO Z, Cut 5 Cut 10 TOH, Cut 19 Xmas, Cut 20 Ramp sweep, Cut 21 Fast to Slow.
                        Z FORCE, Cut 2 , Cut 4, Cut 12, Cut 13, Cut 17 Morning Show
Z WORLD , Cut 1, Cut 14 Slow to Fast
                        Z + , Cut 4 Long. Cut 7, Cut 13 Short
WARP FACTOR, Cut 2, Cut 24 Weather
                        RED HOT, Cut 15
FLAME THROWER, Cut 8, Cut 9

After listening to demos of all the Z100 packages, I can honestly say that I can’t cherry-pick just 20 cuts based on Brian’s suggestions. I can say though that Z Force cut 10 is NOT on my jingle ordering list anytime soon.

I am leaning towards The Flame Thrower and Turbo Z as packages I would order the cuts from, though.

Okay, here’s what I would do. Since no one said that a cut that was originally intended as a morning show or a jock jingle could not be used for a regular jingle instead, I’ve kinda worked around that. :>) I’ve put an asterisk so I can explain what I did.

                            “Flame Thrower”: cuts 2*, 4, 6, & 8.
                            “Warp Factor“: cuts 2, 4, 8, 9, 14a*, & 24 (weather bed).
“Skywave”: cuts 7 & 10 (top of the hour)
                            “Turbo Z”: cuts 4, 5, 8, 10* (music sweep kicker specialty cut), 13* (specially cut-station promo/PSA bed) and 26 (morning show/promo bed)
“Z Force”: cuts 5 & 6 (because, let’s face it, you need to transition from fast to slow and vice versa at some point.)

(Both Flame Thrower #2 and Warp Factor #14a can (and had been in the past) be used as general workhorse cuts. If a jock shot is needed, just use a shout mixed in place of the sung lyrics. WF Cut #14a can also be mixed as a doughnut to frontsell a song.

Repurposing Turbo Z cuts #10 and #13 was my way of getting more bang for the buck. I had heard plenty of stations using TZ cut #10 as a music sweep starter and TZ cut #13 sounds very good as a station promo/PSA bed, so use them if you have the opportunity to do so.)

                            So, how did I do?

I’m not ‘that guy’. Someone has to ‘rise’ to the ‘JAM baiter’ (nice phrase) and having been a JAM customer since ordering personal cuts in 1978 I feel qualified to comment positively on what is GREAT about the Z100 packages.. and many others, particularly when 1 person keeps digging at JAM overandoverandover….

                                :-)

Okay here are my favourite choices:-

TOTH Turbo Z Cut 10, News Z Force Cut 10, Weather Turbo Z Cut 13, Travel Skywave Cut 17, Breakfast Skywave Cut 15.
                                    Flamethrower Cuts 2 & 6, Warp Factor Cut 14, Skywave Cuts 2 & 13, Turbo z Cuts 4, 5, 12, 14, 16, 17, 20, Z Force Cut 4, Red Hot Cuts 3 & 4.

And just to be cheeky I’d add in the illusive PAMS WHTZ Z100 Contempo Cut for good measure!!!

I’d agree, I can’t cherry pick from those guidelines, not with a whole lot of good cuts from those classic Z packages. with me, can’t be done! sorry!

One of the problems with this is in my opinion, there were really two “generations” of Z-100 jingles. You have the “80s” sound that includes everything from Flamethrower to Turbo Z.

After Turbo-Z, you had a serious “90s” shift in the style of the cuts and the vocals.

It would also be appropriate to wonder, do you need a slogan line to convey. You would want to pick cuts that could best carry that slogan line.

So, there are two answers to this question…

                                            Z-100 80s STYLE:

                                            Z+ 5
                                            Z+ 6
                                            Z+ 10
                                            Z+ 11
                                            Z+ 12

Those are my picks. Again, it all depends on the message you want to convey in the cuts.
