A rarity indeed; a pirate radio ‘summer of love’ day in Holland saw a local station OB using cart machines, and even a clip of an old (Radio Wun… ) ReeMeemmmBerrrrs jingle!
September 11, 2012 at 1:45 pm #86371bobgreenradioMemberand why not? i put together a ‘new’ studio 2 summers ago that was a giant step backward. after a little digging and a lot of time on the phone i discovered BE the parent of spotmaster and other brands had a fair quantity of new old stock. i bought 4 QRK 12C tables, 2 BE 5300 3 deck cart machines, an 8 rotary pot board, qrk-preamps, etc.
yes len, we built a brand new, with new equipment, studio of the golden years of top 40. the audio processing was all modern, and the mics were the ev re20 and shure sm7, but we used a tube buffer and reverb to warm it all up.
we had the very texture and sound from the era of good music radio….the hollies never sounded better!
carts are wonderful. they also, we discovered, cut down of false starts and wrong tracks being fired.September 11, 2012 at 1:57 pm #86372pvrakkingLen, the video you refer at is shot in Museum Rock-Art where the Summer of Love 1967 is held. Every year there is an event in Rock-Art to remember August 31st, 1974.
In Rock Art they have on display the old on-shore and off-shore studio of Radio Veronica with the original equipment. During special occasions this is used.September 11, 2012 at 9:21 pm #86375BarrasLen, nice to see cart machines in use in this digital world of clicking a mouse or touching a PC screen to get the jingles on-the-air. I see they`re also using Disc Cart which I used for three weeks when on-air and when the studio was being re-built. Obviously the sound quality of Disc Cart on playout is professional but the day-to-day use of the actual Disc Carts is a broadcast nightmare. I used to find them on the studio floor and someone used one as a drinks coaster. One jock had the bright idea though of pre-recording his commercial breaks from Disc Cart onto DAT, so when he went into an ad-break, he just hit the DAT play button, sat back and drank his coffee, whereas, the rest of us were fumbling about trying to find the right Disc Carts for the commercial breaks.
Keep carts aliveā¦
