Oops I've justed posted a thread about these just. Oh well, I'm sure admin will delete it. :)

Anyway, these are great with creative arrangements and some of the singing is slightly different but very good all the same. Well done Jon and co in Dallas! Great effort!

As a reminder of what we've lost, here's a quick aircheck of KOST 103.5 today:

Thanks for the aircheck Geoff. It seems astounding to me that the current KOST management have thrown away that distinctive KOST 103.5 melody that we all know and love and replaced it with this inferior bland sound. All the KOST packages produced by Jam over many years, are the best jingles ever made and are my all time favourites.

Those two packages are really nice – always moving the sound on but the KOST sound IS a signature sound and sounds great. The airchecks are awful but then Clear Channel are in the business of selling burgers they never cared about stations, imaging, staff or heritage.

Great, just what we need: Another Reelworld jingle! What's next, Love Songs Reelworld style??? :(

Sorry for the rant, guys, but I loved JAM better on KOST.

hahaha! nice, me too, a big jam fan when it came to kost. jam+kost = win! it was a match made to be! *sigh*, a year in, and i miss that signature already. nothing much to listen to here in LA.

Hey – It’s a taste thing so no one is right or wrong they just have a view.
For my part I really like a lot of Reelworld packages, big 105, Windy 100 etc awesome ground breaking sounds. We all know that the Clear Channel strategy in many areas is nothing about quality and sound but money. KOST has had hefty cutbacks in recent years to the on air staff – This is not to freshen up the sound or refocus the station but to save money. KOST could have had a more modern upbeat sound without the wreck of those jingles. A 25 year heritage sonic logo lost for a generic badly sung squawky and yes I’m going to say it – cookie cutter jingle with the call letters squeezed in with little thought. Had they had a bespoke package created from the ground up it might be better. But they sound trashy compared to the rich full sound previously. Are you really saying that those are fine examples of Reelworlds product? Do they make the station sound better? I don’t know the answer. Compared to a lot of the RW stuff unimaginative and pretty pedestrian especially compared to the cuts they replaced.
Was the JAM sound part of the problem or part of the solution for KOST – Was there even a problem? If the jingles were chosen because they were right for the format and gave the station a fresh new sound then fair point. If they were given to the station as a “here we use these now across our stations cos we did a deal” approach then a station that was one of the foremost leaders in carving out an audio identity and moody has lost a bit of the sparkle it had. My issue is they sound like a factory produced jingle the Reelworld singers could have sung 150 different version of that logo beforehand they sound bored!

My only concern here is AC stations of today still try to sell the idea to the audience that they play
Lite Favorites… but their slogan doesn't make sense anymore. For example, it sounds ridiculous on the air when I hear a jingle or DJ who says between a song of Nickelback and Pink:
                        You're listening to Toronto's Lite Favorites, 98.1 CHFI (!)

This was a wonderful idea when they were still playing James Taylor or Hall & Oates. However, today,
this is like saying: We are making a change, but we also are afraid to let you know about that…

Well time will tell if the mass clear out of air talent in a cost cuting move and replacing the hertiage imaging was a good move!

WLTW in NY tried dropping the Lite FM brand a few years ago, and the ratings plummeted. But at the same time, there doesn't seem to be any stopping the progression of the format. So we're left with a name that's inconsistent with the music. I suppose you could look at the station as being “lite” compared to what's on a CHR.

I have to admit that as well-produced as these latest KOST packages are, I'm not sure how well they fit a current AC playlist. So maybe it was time for a change in sound. I don't think going to RW was the answer though. They should've gone back to JAM for something more like Keyframes or Turn Me Up (or even had one of those packages customized to fit their logo).

To be honest, with the electric guitars, electronic fx and other new parts in the latest JAM KOST packages, they tended to lean a bit more towards modern AC than the older KOST-packages… And in any case better than Reelworld could do for the KOST heritage and sound.

I am (as a programmer and on air personality) also a fan of the RW Mix 929-set but their sound does not 'carry' the sound some stations have…

It was a KOST decison. I've heard that from both Stella Prado at KOST and the guys at Reelworld. No “deal” was done.

i'm not going to comment publicly on this other than to say that you don't know the whole story.

Again, I remind everyone that we make what we are asked to make. When we are asked.

If you want to hear a good example of a station that had been using Coast packages but now wanted something more contemporary that still keeps their established logo, listen to KEZK's brand new custom.

Jonathan is correct. There is a lot that you all do not know. I'm reading a LOT of speculation in this thread. I can't comment publicly either, but I will say that I don't buy the “music has changed” excuse that I keep seeing here and on other forums. Sometimes change is made for reasons that leave us all scratching our heads in wonder.

Again, I have no doubts that JAM could produce a modern package for KOST that gels with the current music sound while keeping the signature logo melody. (And I'll concur that at least some of the Coastin' On cuts are leaning towards that direction.) I was just playing devil's advocate here, trying to justify why the station might have felt the need to make a change. But it's definitely reassuring to know that there's more to the story.

I think it is pleasing that we actually have KOSTS's Bryan Simmons posting on this very specialist forum…

Speculation can be both good and bad…. but whatever else may be going on, JAM's jingles for KOST made it one of the very few stations actually known around the world, whereas 1000s of American radio stations don't mean a thing outside their transmitter area!

                                        THAT is an achievment….

I hope whoever is 'in charge' does not permanently 'break the magic' that is KOST

Totally agree with Len. Whatever the situation is over those 25 years JAM has produced some of the most widely used and popular soft jingles and that Coast 103.5 melody logo is very ver ymemorable.

                                              Quote from JMW:

Unless I am being very dim (quite probable), I don't think listeners outside the USA can any longer access KEZK's online stream. Certainly I couldn't. Any chance of a few audio samples here?

I tried listening online to KEZK too Geoff, but received a geo-blocking message. If any can post a few off-air samples I too am eager to hear this new JAM custom.

A proper discussion is of course if jingles should exactly sound like the songs you play (and don't stand out musically with a 7 voice vocal group) or not.

In my honest opinion jingles sound timeless because they have their own sound. At my station we still keep using the WNIC-packages from JAM because they feel like local songs instead of one day hit wonders no one knows nowadays.

I once turned to Music4 for the Capital FM series but those cuts sounded like the popular bands of that period (Travis, Nelly Furtado), and now seem outdated.

For AC: take jinles from JAM. They touch you in your heart, a feeling so important to AC radio. An emotional bond with your listeners that keeps them at your spot, keeps your ratings high and their station 'known and save'.

Spot on, Marc. I think the notion that jingles have to match the sound of the music can be misleading. It sounds good, but of course we want our jingles to stand out. A powerful vocal group that cuts through the musical sound can add something distinctive and memorable to the station sound.
