      Hi

Just wanted to share with you this video I put together a few months back.

This is a little snapshot into what went into Steve Wright's new main theme mix. Of course this does not document all the pre-production, but mainly show's the session players involved on the cut here in New York.

Also it gives you a chance to hear the theme almost in the clear!

      Enjoy!

          great video.
no doubt steve'll just use it as talkover bed.
shame considering all the work that goes into making it and you'll probably never get to hear it fully on air.

I just love that theme. Cool rework AJ and however it gets used, listeners will know (subconsciously) after hearing just 8 notes where they are tuned, which is what effective branding is all about.

Now, do you do a “personal cut” version?

And where's the Steve Wright CD of his 80's stuff ???????? ; ) I've been standing in the queue here for decades!

                Love it.
At the risk of sounding greedy … got any videos of vocal tracks too?

Thanks for all your positive comments. If you hate it say so too!

The story behind that “theme” is that it was a bunch of tracks that I mixed for Steve when he was just about to do the infamous Radio 1 morning shift. I did only one mix-down of it and then he picked it to use as his sig. I really had no idea he would still be using it this far on and to be honest I don't think I liked it at the time or I would have done a lot of versions.

So to answer Sean and David: I am also going for the record of the longest ever CD in the making!! But seriously, I have recently been re-mastering a lot of old material for this very idea and it takes many hours of “downtime” which is rare now. Now that we have offices on both sides of the atlantic and that fact that I am now in the business of producing CD's for Music Candy, it's really not far off guys. New website first and then that.

                  Thanks again

By the way, my personal favourite all time idents are by Anita Kerr. She had a vocal quality which I haven't heard since. Added to that is the fact that she did all her own arrangements and was obviously heavily jazz influenced.

Now thats a Jingle… No cut and paste in a bedroom mix …

Love it! What a great theme. To be fair to Steve, he talks over the start, but often leaves a lot in the clear just before the top of the hour.

Most of the time Steve does use it in the clear and is also using a lot of the litte sub-mixes from the new version, though of course he is still opening the show with the old version. I am more of a fan of the newer mix mostly because it sound's more comtemporary considering it's a big stringy theme with French horn as the lead instrument.

Finally, I have to say that even if I thought it was going to be a just a “talkover bed” I would have still put the same effort into it because when there's a budget for all those musicians, you're definitely going to be doing more than 1 cut.

Oh and apologies to Jonathan Maron, the bass player, I didin't have any footage of him playing on it :-S He won't care anyway!
