Rather than confine JAM material to the 'Classic' jingles Forum, I'd like to use a classic JAM cut to illustrate what was done very well back in the 80s and 90s (by many jingle companies) but which is lacking in most of today's jingle companies:
Basically, making the MOST use of good tracks to add variety economically to a station package.
One 'lost trick' is that of the 'donut' solo lyric/half sing to give a variety of 'images' to one cut. The Radio Merseyside jingles posted recently did this well – various part lyrics over the same tracks.
It is also ECONOMICAL as the station name part is already sung, you just pay for extra solos.
Here is how I did this on a great JAM cut (WSM/WABC originally) combining a standard track with an idea from PAMS Series 28!

[UPDATE download – sorry TC / Wixy, there was a 4Shared problem but it's working NOW! ]
For all those stations who now stick to one lyric line on EVERY cut in a package, why not try something like this NEXT time? It will certainly make your station sound more INTERESTING + FUN.
Or maybe regular JM's have other opinions?
In any case it's time I uploaded something to thank all the regulars who spend hours creating montages – so you have all the master mixes of the cut!
June 9, 2009 at 1:45 pm #67529IainJohnstonMemberEXCELLENT cut that one Len – and your version(s) of it are certainly a favourite of mine, and I know of a few others too! And the “take” on the “topless bathing suit”(???!!!) cut from PAMS Series 28 does ring bells with PAMS fans.
One point – your file is downloading NOT as an MP3, and has to be renamed as one to play it – someone else had this happening with their audio posts recently too.
As for the “old trick” mentioned – I'm pleased to say that when I ordered my JAM cut a wee while back, I purposely did the same thing (by buying 2 extra sonovox solo lines sung by Jon W in the middle between the front / end group vocal parts, and thus generating two “A” & “B” main versions of the same “common” cut – and needless to say the extra mix-out possibilities that produced).
And as I've said before – with his attention to detail JMW produced them EXACTLY the way I requested. :^)

June 9, 2009 at 2:53 pm #67534BarrasCo-incidentally, I`ve just featured a resing of that cut in the montage called JAM Vault 5…
You can hear it resung for “106 WKMO” at 2.50…

June 9, 2009 at 6:12 pm #67540ratnobMemberI love that cut – one of the first jingles I really remember. Love the lyrics, vocals, track .. everything. Who are the solo vocalists, Len? Is the male Chris K?
Thanks so much for posting. You make a really good point and have provided some brilliant audio.
Trust the sun is shining (it isn't here in Suffolk)

Sounds Like Abbey Holmes and Chris K to me
June 9, 2009 at 7:43 pm #67542LenGroatThanks …
I do think this is an amazing track .. and it holds a LOT of lyric – compared say to the earlier BBC Radio 2 version
I do recall it was Abby and Chris on the solos…
It was MAGIC sitting in the booth watching this being recorded..
BTW.. Chris was always very modest about his voice, and on this it was double-tracked as that was how he wanted it… ever the perfectionist.
And yes Geoff the Sun was shining in Portugal – last week it was 35c / 96f … only 20c / 68f today (that needed a JAM weather intro !)

June 9, 2009 at 7:46 pm #67543ratnobMemberOkay, Len – enough detail, you git!
June 9, 2009 at 8:46 pm #67545ratnobMemberAlso, Len (having spent too much of the evening re-listening to these tracks), it reminds us of what a great vocal talent (let alone writer etc) Chris Kershaw was. I love his voice and miss hearing it.
June 9, 2009 at 9:22 pm #67549IainJohnstonMemberJust for reference purposes – a quick snippet of the WABC air version – and Len's “creative lyrics” GEM versions certainly let JAM develop those spine-tingling solos/harmonies into something far superior to the original version!
(PS – for anyone that doesn't understand what an “MP3 artifact” is – this bit of audio is a “good” example!)

June 10, 2009 at 4:27 am #67552ratnobMemberThanks, Wixy. I'd forgotten all about that. It's like an entirely different cut. Len's get my vote!
