Pirate Johnnie Walker is a new weekly show for BBC Radio 2.
http://www.jinglemad.com/request.php?3276
The show is set on a fictitious pirate vessel named the Rock ‘N’ Roll, sailing somewhere in the North Sea (although Johnnie is actually sitting in a comfortable Radio 2 studio on dry land!).
Playing hits from 1955 to 1975 – much of it on the original vinyl – Pirate Johnnie Walker transports Radio 2 listeners back to the days of pirate radio in the ‘60s and ‘70s…
Wise Buddah Jingles & Music Imaging were commissioned to provide the jingles for the show in the style and the sound of the late 60’s. Producer/composer Jem Godfrey approached the challenge by initially studying the production components of that era.

It's not a bad effort as far as it goes, but it sounds a bit cheap. Why not just get resings of some PAMS classics?

February 12, 2009 at 7:53 am #65055mumossYes, sorry, thanks for uploading it!
Actually, these are growing on me slightly, I must admit…
February 12, 2009 at 7:58 am #65057InfernoAs far as I'm aware S2Blue have done some PAMS resings for Johnnie Walker.
Oh, talking about S2Blue, the BBC Radio Lancashire package is in demo form and not in the usual media player. Individual cuts are set out and you put your cursor over the required cut and keep it there until the jingle is finished. I have to say I love this package and the vocals are very good.

Agree with you John…
What I find bizarre is that these jingles are trying to sound like JAM/PAMS, even the female voice on them sounds like Trella Hart !
Nevertheless, thanks for posting them Martin.

February 12, 2009 at 9:04 am #65059RobinBlamiresI really like them, good to hear Wise Buddah making clever use of the Groove Addicts Radio 2 logo which makes things more coherent.

I think the point is as a lot of stations in the UK still use re sings of the old PAMS Jingles
as BBC Radio 2 is a national station they needed to have jingles for the show in the style and the sound of the late 60’s which other stations are not playing !February 12, 2009 at 2:41 pm #65070BarrasMartin Lester wrote:

I guess the average radio listener will not know the difference between S2Blue/PAMS or Wise Buddah/PAMS or even CPMG/PAMS but us “Jinglemadders” can quite plainly hear the difference in quality compared to JAM/PAMS !

February 12, 2009 at 3:06 pm #65071RobinBlamiresSteady now! Although I think in terms of vocal sound the Wise Buddah vocals are nicer than S2Blue.
I wrote on my blog earlier that I thought they sounded like an obscure female American vocal group “The Roches”.
If anyone's seen “One On 1” or listened to Gary Davies in the 80s, he used their version of the Hallelujah Chorus as a sting to denote a correct answer on The Day To Day Challenge.
It's a nice distinctive touch using custom tracks rather than just old doctored PAMS jingles on their own.
February 13, 2009 at 3:30 pm #65103mumossI'm just listening to the actual show now – which is brilliant – and they're using old PAMS jingles, too. Edited, maybe, but still. Which makes me a lot more well disposed towards this.
Still think it sounds a bit cheap – I miss the lushness of the PAMS tracks – but it's not bad. And yes, the use of the Radio 2 logo is excellent. Wish we could have had some custom JAM tracks instead – obviously, they would have been by far the best at capturing the sound – but a nice enough pastiche.
