I've just got done listening to WLIT online this morning and there are no longer using any jingles, according to station PD Darr Davis.

Back on January 15TH, 2000 they played mostly jingles. Back to back to back until now.
      I
When this will end is beyond me, unless CC gets there act together.

So until WLIT airs jingles again I won't listen to the station again.

I'll just listen to Fresh 105.9. They play jam jingles.

But WLIT is taking the station on a head to head Battle.

      Discuss if you dare.

Sorry to hear what has happened to WLIT.Sounds like Clear Channel were on one of their cost cutting excercises as usual.
I think they were giving stations an ultimatum of stop playing jingles or sacrifice a presenter.Something that was in the pipeline from earlier this year.
As Darren Davis was responsible for Reelworlds WLIT 2007 package (according to the demo anyway),it might not have come easy for him.Especially that Cory has mentioned that they were playing back to back jingles which is something rare in this day and age.
Hopefully, jingles will return to WLIT.Sooner rather than later.

            I dout that.

Daren said WLIT was going to get LITEhouse, but decided not to.

all though WLIT reaired Christmess jingles and only those I still have my douts on WLIT reairing normal jingles.

But I have been wrong before. Remember when WUSN stopped airing the old WCTO package for 4 months and aired RW One the next month afterwerds?

That's the same for WLIT. 10 months of no jingles and it's all CC's fault!

I think we should start a canpain to bring jingles back to WLIT. Who's with me?

I apologize… I speak French and I am not totally sure about the meaning of “playing jingles back to back…”

              Could anyone clarify please?

Thierry, “back to back…”, generally means one after another (continous) , or the term as used as above i think means: predominately (lots off)

There was a radio station in the USA that played “back-to-back” radio commercials, can`t recall the call-letters (because they had no jingles – ha ! ha !) seriously though, this station played non-stop commercials 24 hours a day – I have an aircheck of this station which I think was based in Las Vegas. Furthermore, there was a radio station in the USA that had Howard Stern on-air “back-to-back”, repeating his syndicated shows 24 hours a day.

For us people (or jingle freaks) in the international jingle community, it`s bad news to hear that WLIT is no longer airing jingles.

If, at some point, you miss too much the WLIT jingles, I can post anytime some of the re-sing cuts for CJEZ-Toronto. 97,3 uses jingles “back to back” as well since I live here, at least for 7 years: http://www.4shared.com/file/63091369/3e113500/97_3_CJEZ_TOH_sept2008.html

                      Thierry,

Thank you for the EZ rock toh.

Can you post one more cut for us?

                      Weather.

                      Thank you.

I have to chime in on this. I'm pretty good friends with Darren… and he's “one of us”. He's a true jingle anorak and LOVES JAM stuff. (You may recall he was he one that bought Breakthrough for WNIC, then got a RW custom and then went back to JAM for a new WNIC custom with the original logo.) I spoke to him a while back and we talked about the fact that the jingles were going away on WLIT. He said, “It doesn't sound like any radio station I've ever programmed before… but it sure is clean and uncluttered.”

I don't think he was in favor of losing the jingles on the station, but as PPM measurement comes into play, Clear Channel is pushing Program Directors to shorten IDs, talk breaks and sweeps and eliminate the longer jingles and liners. I'm afraid you'll hear more straight segues and fewer jingles on Clear Channel stations in the future, and I'll bet that other broadcast groups will follow. It seems to make sense that with the audience measurement conducted electronically, it's not about beating the call letters or slogan into the listener so they can play the “what station did I listen to yesterday” game. The mission of today's radio station is to play LOTS of music with minimal interruption.

I am truly happy that you brought it Rob, because I was thinking of this matter a long time ago. Why would radio stations still pay for jingles (that are clearly made to identify) when, very soon, there won`t be any specific need to know the call letters? As you wrote, the audience measurement evolves to a different technology and we obviously will see serious changes within the jingle industry.

I only hope that we still have a few more years of good radio with jingles. However, I already noticed in the last 5 years a loss in the way jingles are made — in order to meet new expectations from corporates that manage radio stations all around the globe.

Perhaps jingles will eventually only remain on stations that really believe on their overall “image”, which is improved a lot better by jingles than spoken id`s.

Thanks rob for that good information.

Sounds like jingles will only be put on air if they really need to brand there overall sound.

To Thierry: Thanks for a life lesson on which we will not soon forget.

I listened to WSNE known as “93.3 Coast FM” out of Providence, RI and noticed that they are not airing any jingles, just the sweepers. There's couple TOTH clips of WSNE that was posted on Tophour website, some of them containing jingles. Their most recent package was from Jones TM until they finally dropped them.

I have not listened to its sister WWBB(B101), but I believe that they too dropped their jingles; the last being was a couple of JAM resings from their older packages. The station itself evolved into a classic rock format.

Finally, WISX, “My 106-1”, which launched in the fall of 2006 replacing Smooth Jazz WJJZ(moved to 97.5, but recently and unfortunately flipped to AC as “Now 97.5”) do not have jingles as of yet. Any jingles that will someday be played on that station is very unlikely. WISX is Rhythmic AC, their playlist is a bit similar to KTU out of NYC.

So that means that PDs will have to realize that jingles are not so important as to the overall sound of the stations. Listeners will always remember what station are they listening to and what type of music are they enjoying. Just using sweepers would be well enough for imaging.

WSNE stopped using the jingles completely sometime within the last 2 months when they re-adjusted their format to become a Hot AC again. The few jingles that they were using prior to this were from the TM Century package produced for 97.3 Coast FM in Miami.

WWBB stopped using their WPLJ, Z100, and Q95 JAM jingles less than a year after they first got them. They first hit the air in August of 2006, and they were gone by March or April of 2007, they were gone WAY too soon! This was around the time that it first became obvious that Clear Channel was no longer a fan of jingles. While they do lean classic rock now, it's not all that much different from when they were using the jingles. However, their slogan has changed since when they were using jingles. Instead of “Big Hits,” it's now “B1 With The Music.” That would be pretty tough getting sung into a jingle!

Reports about the death of jingles may be premature.

So long as people have a choice of radio stations, the programmers will want to make sure that listeners choose their station – jingles help to make them memorable. I'm just back from France where every station seemed to be using sung jingles. And as the Jingle News Monthly podcast shows, lots of other stations are doing the same.

The first long jingle some of us heard was Jam's “Where have all the jingles gone?” which lamented the death of the traditional jingle. There followed a golden age of great personality radio with an amazing reinvention of the sung jingle. Don't assume it won't be back.

                                        Yours optimistically

Where have all the jingles gone….
Could be remixed to Where have all the indepentent stations have gone to.
