I get variations of this question often, but it's impossible to answer concisely. I evaluate jingles on so many levels that I have different favorites in different categories, such as:

Jingles that remind me of a certain place and time because I heard them on the air.
Jingles that are great musically and/or lyrically, whether I ever heard them used or not.
Jingles that I'm proud of because I wrote them, or JAM did them, and I thought they turned out well.
Jingles that are cleverly adapted in syndication with new lyrics or melodies.
Jingles that work really well on the air.
Jingles which were fun to work on, and remind me of the people involved in the project.
And so on, and so on…

See, there's no good short answer.

Which PAMS works are your favorites?

In general, I'd say the prime of PAMS was Series 27-34. The writing and production was very original, and the musical talent of the singers and musicians was top notch. But there are so many other PAMS cuts and packages that I like that this is a hopeless question!

What JAM jingles are you most proud of?

Which of your children do you love the most? See, it's an impossible question. If you've ever heard the “20 Years in 20 Minutes” montage on our 20th anniversary CD, I can tell you that I hand-picked every jingle on there. So you know that I'm proud of all of those. But there are different reasons for each. Some are just sung and mixed really well. Some were for clients we enjoyed and respected. Some bring back memories of the actual sessions, and the process of creating the jingles. And so on. I think that some of our best work over the years was always for BBC Radio 1 and 2 because everyone put 110% effort into those projects. But there are so many more cuts I could add to this list… it would fill several CDs. And then you'd need liner notes to tell you what I like about each one!

Are there any jingles produced by other companies that you consider to be top notch?

Of course there are. In some other thread I've talked about my deep admiration for the material written in the '70s by Dick Hamilton for companies like Heller and TM. And the amazing LA vocal group used on those packages, and on some JAM packages in the 80s. In a “just for listening” way, those are some of my favorites. But again, there are so many cuts from producers worldwide that are excellent that it's impossible to pick just a few.

You didn't ask whether there are any PAMS or JAM jingles which I don't particularly like. That I can answer: Yes, of course! Everyone's going to have favorites and least favorites in every package, and I'm no exception to that.

So there's my non-answer answer to your question. Aren't you sorry you asked? ;)

It still provides an interesting thread of discussion. I think I can speak for all of us that we really appreciate you participating in this board, and that we appreciate your work even more.

              Thanks Jon.

Hi Mr. Jon, that was really interesting to know. I'd like to ask which non-English jingle package is one of your favorites? I mean, JAM have sung for Spanish and Asian stations and so on. Which one was your most memorable?

I knew that was going to happen.

Posted this part of an interview with Jon in “Barras Montages” several years ago which features Jon talking about his favourite non-JAM jingles. I believe the interviewer is John Quincy, a radio personality in the states. When I first heard this interview in the 1990s I didn`t really appreciate the Hugh Heller jingles, however, since then I have collected several demos and packages by Hugh Heller and his jingle compositions are superb to listen to, some interesting use of harmonies with an “off-the-wall” sound to the usual jingle sound.

                      At least I'm consistent!
