I just came across this in a link the 'Full Station Package – October 2007'I am AMAZED that the BBC are spending public money on such AWFUL synth material.
a mixture of simple tracks, drum machine rhythms…
…. and clearly based on the BBC tv News theme…
It must be a VERY dull station to listen to… What a waste of time and money….
in the 'old days' we'd call it 'library music' and it was FREE !
Surely SOMEONE can put the FUN back into radio? Newcastle wasa FUN place when I was there…
February 17, 2008 at 7:39 am #56673upsweepMemberI agree with you Len, you look at the majority of newer Local BBC Radio packages, have gone down a similar route, just bits of music, there are some exceptions i.e steve england ,some bespoke packages also a few IQ Beats packages sound great for Local BBC
I wonder if thats just to attract thier catchment listener, not sure but others, but my Local BBC Radio Kent – i dont know anyone in my age group (40) who makes it their preferred choice, but my parents love it!
i think BBC London is aimed at a younger audience, from the bits i have heard & the imaging seems to reflect that
Is it the same for other BBC Locals ?! – what is thier audience, im guessing most are aimed @ the older audience – members let me know the dianamics of the Local BBC Output
February 17, 2008 at 11:26 am #56678mumossI enjoy some of the older Music 4 packages for local stations – the BBC London package sounds great to me, for instance. Sure, it's not sung jingles – but I think it's good, strong imaging, that stuck in my head from the moment I heard it.
But some of Music 4's more recent packages for BBC local radio aren't great. In fact, I don't like a lot of their packages these days – I hated the One Network cuts. The one person they still do good things for is Chris Moyles (presumably because he gets in there and *makes* them do good stuff) – and even then, his recent packages don't sound as good to me as they usually do. It's a shame.
February 17, 2008 at 12:28 pm #56682InfernoI think the Music 4 Newcastle and WM packages suck big time. Sounds like they were composed on a Casio keyboard by someone who was drunk! I really hope BBC WM get better jingles this year. Even Les Ross hates them. However Music 4 did a brill job for Radio Cambridgeshire. Much better effort from them. I do agree also that Steve England, Bespoke and IQ Beats do a great job for the BBC Locals. And lets not forget Wicked Productions that do Radio Leicester's jingles. They aint too bad either!
February 17, 2008 at 12:46 pm #56683MartinSI have to agree. The more recent music 4 packages don't seem to quite have the production detail of some of the early Vibe Music Imaging material. The Pulse package around 1997/8 was truly refreshing.
Would a re-sing of the current BBC Radio Manchester jingles from IQ Beats would been any good for BBC Radio Newcastle, or is it to Manchester/North West influenced?
February 17, 2008 at 5:18 pm #56692PaulI've heard on the grapevine that some BBC Local station is to get a new custom package soon. No word on the station or the producers… just that something new is on the way!
February 17, 2008 at 8:44 pm #56699malexanderThe Stuff on the website of music 4 is only a snip of what they station actually gets, they get 100's of mixouts and elememts and the on air ones are not those that are on the site.
February 19, 2008 at 10:28 am #56750simon_t123MemberS2Blue have produced an excellent set of packages for a number of BBC Locals, the local radio branding has gone but been replaced by common sounding instrumentation in the packages.
Wise Buddah had made a package for BBC Derby but for some reason thats yet to make an appearance on-air.
Music4's package for BBC Tees is ok, WM & Newcastle however … is not ok ! Cambridgeshire & Devon is a good package although the Cambridgeshire instrumentals are awash with Devon musical logo's which does sound out of place. Only their sung ID's have a Cambridgeshire logo.
I guess the quailty of BBC local imaging must come down to money ? IQ Beats quoted a hefty UK price for a non-commercial resing recently £500 a pop ! And in recent times of tight BBC purse strings you must surely get what you pay for !
