Depends on the individual DJ & syle of show they wanted to produce. Jingles wouldn't ever have suited John Peel or Andy Kershaw. They presented a more serious music-orientated show rather than the more “fun” poppy stuff.
It's more significant really, considering the current climate of radio (in my opinion), that there can be such differences. Commercial radio has little to differentiate one from another really nowadays, but the BBC still has a certain amount of character-led programming, for better or worse!
Bob Harris wouldn't suit jingles in excess either, it's the Rosko types who can play with them and use them to an advantage, all about the individual presentation styles, but I certainly got the impression that Bob was/is a radio fan. I remember a particular show he did about radio (especially US radio) with extracts when he joined Radio 210 in Reading back in the late 70's & took over the Oldies show from Mike Read.

I once heard Peely play three JAM jingles back to back just to prove someone wrong who'd written in saying he never played any !
We all know why Radio 2 have managed to eek out their current jingles for over ten years – because they hardly ever play any apart from the news in, travel bed and TOH jock ID's !

I airchecked John Peel playing his show-starter JAM name-check jingle…I believe this is the only airing it had.

The great John Peel lives on in my car with the 1466 aircheck cassette tapes I have of him.

Ha! It probably was the only time it was used on John's show. Bet he loved those jingles in a twee kind of way really!!
Safe to say the only other time it would have ever been on air was in the Jingle show montage at 5am in the morning.
