It is really NICE to hear all this. I really enjoyed using the WNIC-packages in the 90s, especially because the cuts worked like jingles but almost all sounded like little songs.
We introduced It's Nice in our market through a big on and off air campaign – the ratings went from 27 to 34% instantly. The station I used them for (Radio Noord Waar Je Groningen Hoort) had a station name ánd a pay-off that rhymed, like the original lyrics from 100.3/WNIC did. To our listeners it seemed as if we created those little songs ourselves – I never had a better compatibility between original American jingles and a Dutch translation.
Here are 2 songs:

Jonno,
As I scrolled through my archives, I found these mixouts we used as stand alones:
[1] tag from weathercut, could be Very Nice though, with voice sample,
[2] dj shout and shortened version from cut 'makes your workday go by faster',
[3] beginning and end mixed together from morningsong (sunshine travels millions of miles…),
[4] aca and mix out from traffic bed followed by our time signal and news…Have a really nice day!

By the way, WNIC had great ratings last summer: 4.1% 13+ over de past 3 months, the best non-christmas ratings in a long time. With JAM-jingles…

I had 4 cuts from “it's Nice” re-sung for an RSL back in 1997 (we were on-air when Dianna died) – here they are, including the full voiced TOH!

MemberRemember those from the Steve England demo – never realised that it was an RSL rather than full-time – you must have had a great jingle budget to be able to get those for an RSL!

MemberAuthorRobin,
Thanks for posting those they sound great!March 11, 2008 at 4:41 pm #57339Glenna
MemberIs there any other stations using the song.
Or in the past used it?March 11, 2008 at 9:32 pm #57356rsimpkins

The local station at the time was very bland and we wanted to shake things up a bit – so I spent considerably more than I should have just to make a bit of an impression!

also, when the jingles were recorded, as I was working in a post-production facility, I dialled in to JAM on ISDN 128k Stereo and “produced” the package in London, with a couple of jingle fan friends there too! I still have a DAT of the entire session. If anyone wants to hear it I'll dub it in and post it!

The session tape sure would interest me, along with a couple of other production guys that pop in and say hello here from time to time.
Thanks for making the offer.

MemberWould also welcome getting to hear the session tape Robin!
These are the “dug out of the box in the attic” things in the background that make Jinglemad much more than just a plain discussion Forum!

MemberAuthorRobin,
I'll echo Sean and Iain's comments… material like your session tape provides great insight into the behind the scenes world of jingle production and I'm sure will be of interest to many on here. Thanks for all your contributions so far!March 12, 2008 at 11:35 am #57383IainJohnston
MemberAs indeed echoed on Robin's other Threads too – quality stuff!
(I still have a session “out-take” from the KenR PAMS Series 31 Personal Cut done for me several years
ago – but even TC thinks thats a “train wreck” so probably better that one stays “Embargoed” I think!)March 12, 2008 at 1:23 pm #57390rsimpkins
you asked for it, so here it is. The JAM studio session recorded for Dorset Coast FM on 23rd June 1997.
WARNING! a lot of the speech is very low level (background recording from the studio mics) so if you turn your speakers up and they start to sing you may spend the rest of the day picking bits of speaker cone out of your face
oh, and it's nice and big.

…and that's why you bring the file up in Adobe Audition to correct the levels. I value my eardrums!

MemberNot often we get a FORTY_SEVEN_MINUTE long Audio Post in these here parts!
Fascinating stuff – and some excellent(?!) out-of-tune “practice runs” of the vocals too!
Something that I've noticed before – JAM obviously have OTHER stations' vocals on the track stack
during a session (e.g. “Dorset Coast FM, DEARBORN, DETROIT”). Do they maybe just have the ones
from the original custom commissioning client's session (WNIC in this case) maybe as “reference”
vocals, or more? Just curious!Cracking post though Robin, thanks for that!

Thanks Robin. I must admit that I probably spend more time listening to sessions rather than the final mixes!

I guess so. There's the famous Pirate FM jingle that ends with “Pirate FM – South West – in Buffalo” on an Alfasound demo.

MemberOriginal vocals probs on the Master Reel etc. Mix outs are done by muting parts of a track. Perhaps JAM re-singers have packages dubbed onto CD without vocals ?

i love every single cut of the its nice package.

MemberFascinating – for us plebs, this is like stepping into another world. Great to hear Mr W in command – and also Chris Kershaw in the studio. Does anyone know what he's doing these days?
