Metro Radio in the mid 1970s had a “loop” recording with the voice of James Whale giving station identity. This was played out overnight night and if I recall correctly, was heard about every 2 minutes or so. Metro Radio in the early days would closedown at 2am and then start broadcasting again at 6am. Here`s the closedown audio recorded off-air.

BBC Radio 2 used to open with this joyful little jingle through the 70's and early 80's.

I preferred the one the one that Radio 2 used prior to that (early to mid 70's). It's been posted here before I'm sure, but here is the “Hands upon the Clock” jingle “not forgetting those of you in tune with your BBC local radio station”!

MemberNice to hear both of these again. Takes me back to when I'd wake up early just to hear jingles at the crack of dawn – long before anyone thought about 24-hour stations in the UK.

I'd forgotten that BBC Radio 5 used to close down. This was a closedown jingle they used but don't know the year, would be sometime around 1994/95 I suspect.

More likely to be pre-1994 as 5 Live launched in early 1994.

I found this at the MHP Private Parts
a mid 90's start-up from BBC Radio Ulster
Unusually, the station had been taking 5 Live overnight

Viking Radio closedown jingle from the Cath Baxter launch package.
Just how it should be. A classic.http://jinglemad.com/e107_files/public/1203715739_1027_FT43760_viking_closedown.mp3 filename:1203715739_1027_FT43760_viking_closedown.mp3

The instrumental version of the Viking Radio closedown song was rarely used.

Here's the Radio Luxembourg opener used during the 1980s.

Do you also have the FM and Shortwave midnight opener with Mike Knight's voiceover and the 3am closedown announcement with Bob Stewart's voiceover too? R.Luxembourg used to put the English Service at midnight UK time(1am CET)onto RTL's Hosingen FM tx relay carrying 88.9/92.5 and 97.0Mhz FM stereo in Luxembourg and surrounding areas and onto RTL's Junglinster SW tx relay carrying 49.26m(6090kHz) Shortwave at 50kW omnidirectional beam for international listeners round the world. During the day,SW and FM would carry the French German and Luxembourgeois languages.

MemberApologies for the quality – ref purposes only – its from a very old reel tape aircheck…

(Considering that surely stations have to pay a royalty for each “play” of “records”, for
many smaller stations can it really be worth staying on-air between midnight and 6am
even with voice-tracking/automation?)March 11, 2008 at 5:39 pm #57343Bory

Yes it is. They also did an opening announcement at 12midnight UK for the start of the English service on FM locally in Luxembourg and surrounding areas and on SW 49.26m 6090kHz.
It went
“Radio Luxembourg 208metres/1440kilohertz medium wave, now also on 3 FM frequencies in Europe and around the world on 49.26metres Shortwave. Wherever you are Radio Luxembourg is right there with you!(Station of the 80's radio luxembourg!)”March 15, 2008 at 9:01 am #57518CompostCORNER

My first post as I probably don't have anything you guys don't already have.
Here's the rather lively and upbeat Viking Radio start-up.

Re-post…(as link above has expired)
Metro Radio in the 1970s used to play this recording of James Whale`s voice during the night – probably a cart left on play as this message would playout every 2 minutes or so…
