        Grrrrrrrrrreat memories for me!

I was a big, big fan of Whaley on Red Rose and Aire in the late 80s. Do It Yourself Dedications, the 11 o'clock warning, Alice the cleaner, Rodney in Preston, Kathryn the phone operator… FAB show.

I've got many of those jingles somewhere in the studio upstairs… they were on the end of the tape of the Wrap It Up For Christmas song he did.

Strangely, the 'He's the most famous man in the whole world ever and he's right here, a mega-star in his own right, legend of our time…' cut had a line edited out for that tape. The on-air version had the line 'and he really knows how to handle a woman… and he's here' on it.

        Nice post David!

What memories… I remember lyricing the PAMS Night Owls jingle in 1974….

To this day I don't know who sang on our PAMS 74 / 75 sets but I believe several of the key original singers had already left by then, as PAMS (sadly) crumbled…

But it does sound like Jackie Dickson on the Night Owls cut ?

Shortly after Metro started, one night James and I jumped into my yellow Fiat 128 Rally (seemed very cool then !) to drive to the edge of Metro's broadcast arrea..

          ………we drove………… and drove…. and drove……

Then it hit us we were on a BIG station…

James is a truly nice guy, and a GREAT, original communicator… Quite a few of today's music stations could benefit from gettng someone like him..

Strange coincidence in a way this….back in 1980, a certain Len Groat sent me, and a more experienced colleague on the first IBA radio course down in London, hosted by Bill Crozier, and old “cardboard shoes” Kieth Skues.
Also present were a couple of guys from Metro, Mark Seaman, and……James Whale! Amongst the many hilarious things we got up to, possibly the one i can post here is when we were all in the car on the way to the course, and came across some roadworks. James ordered Mark to stop whilst he pulled onboard one of the traffic cones, and at the next set of traffic lights, urged the driver in the car to our left, who was signalling to go left, to wind down his window, he duly did, only to find the traffic cone being hurled into his car as we sped away!
Nice to know radio was in capable hands back then!
