Hi All,
There has been a lot of talk on the forums recently, mostly from newbie collectors, about not being able to get hold of packages to start their collection with or that there’s not many new packages becoming available. This can be true at quiet periods of the year when people are busy with work or on vacation. So just keep in there. I’ve found the last few months quiet, but I still managed to add almost 30 new packages to my list last week.
Everytime you log on here you see a lot of people browsing, and probably downloading things, but it’s always the same people who post. And those people usually have large collections because they didn’t give up collecting when nobody would trade with them or give them jingles free-gratis. Some advice to newbies, which has been said time-and-time again on the forums but they don’t listen – don’t keep requesting things. Offer what you have too and provide links to it or post it on the download section. And generally, some stuff never becomes available (Radio 1 etc) to all of us and others time it’s just not out there on the trading circuit!
To help some newbies out I’m willing to provide any 4 packages from my list (http://www.paulmcgrath.info/jingles/) to anyone who wants them, for nothing in return. In the case of newbies – hopefully this will help you get started and build up your collection. Or in the case of fellow collectors – this is your chance to get stuff from me!! Have a look at my list and email me with what you want – paul.mcgrath@gmail.com. I am only going to trade via MP3 so all packages will have to be downloaded from my server. I don’t have the time to post things out.
In doing this I hope some other collectors will follow suit too…

May 9, 2006 at 2:43 am #27488DavidHemsleyI don’t trade anymore – I just give.
Just dubbed all the 150 Alfasound demo’s I had for someone. Didn’t mind – just send the DVD to put it on and pay the postage . . . .easy.
In fact I might make my entire collection available on DVD’s one day – for free.
Maybe if we all swapped like that the world would be a happier place

As he’s said, after a while, you want to help out with collectors that are starting out,so the best way is to be open with your collection as much as you can – BUT within reason.
Many fellow collectors are asked to embargo material they have recieved. I know this annoys certain posters to this site as I’ve seen many times the line “THEY’VE got it and THEY won’t give it to me”,but many packages are gained on trust and do come with certain conditions attached. Believe me,it’s as frustrating for the collector who owns it being unable to release it to others as the person who’s wanting it for their collection, but normally it’s due to copyright issues, release only to staff at the station that it originates from etc, so please don’t “go off on one” if a colleague is unable to help.
I try to engender the “what’s mine is yours” policy when it comes to my collection and wish I could get more of it online, but time constraints and lack of available webspace stops me from doing so. However,if I can ever help out with something,I’ll try to..
Happy collecting!

I really hope that’s not the case That’s just not like us.
If you’ve had problems with one or two collectors, there are nearly 7500 others from which to choose. There are many generous folk among us ‘madders, and a private request to the right person will almost always get a better response than a public post.
The best way to build your collection is to form personal relationships with collectors on this board. That’s why most everyone’s jingle lists contain the same stuff. However, part of the “Web of Trust” (if there still is such a thing) is that when you are given something and asked not to trade it, you don’t trade it – plain and simple.

Please email me oliverhouldsworth@yahoo.co.uk and i can forward you a copy of my collection.Same for anyone who would like a copy.
May 9, 2006 at 5:24 pm #27501JingleMad2005This is a fantastic idea Paul. It will give people the chance to get packages that people want and best of all get more people interested in Jingle collecting.
I’ve been collecting jingles for about a year now and I find it hard to jingles that aren’t commercially avalible. I know that you have to start somewhere but it is hard for newbies to offer anything to experienced collectors as they already have post stuff (e.g David Barras, Pete Wilson to name a few) who are great collectors but I have trouble offering anything in return.
Thanks for everything that the site has given me so far, long may it continue!

May 9, 2006 at 5:52 pm #27502upsweepMemberthe offer is great, and thanx very much to all who post stuff here , i can’t say i want to own every jingle out there (so would not be classed a serious collector). Having said that i look at the site at least 3 to 4 times a day!
I obviously love the jingles i know which are generally BBC National and my local IR (love hearing some of the variations / resings used across the globe).
its a great jesture the seroius enthusiasts make here, i personally have only been around here for about 4 months – and busy surfing around the net have got a healthy collection, i never thought i would own. I have uploaded a few which i thought ppl would like, and will continue to contribute as & when i can.
For sure i will check out the lists of those who are willing to help us budding collectors – thanx again
May 21, 2006 at 6:51 pm #27533NickySMemberI have to agree a lot with BigDave … it’s also an attitude thing for me. Some requests are along the lines of you’ve got it so give it to me type things rather than a polite request or as you say a building up of a relationship so that you trust them. I have happily dubbed the Radio One CDs that have been going for silly prices on Ebay for many people in the past for – and in most cases not even asked for the postage. I will often get hold of something that I think other people might like and just send them a copy … sometimes I get something in return, sometimes not, but that’s not why I send them. Yes I have some stuff in my collection that – as BigDave said – I can’t just give out to everyone for various reasons but I will always be honest and say that. I think it is also a trust thing – I have been given stuff by some of the well known posters on this site and promised not to pass it on and I don’t – or I always ask first as sometimes it’s a time issue and enough time has passed to allow things to be passed on. I appreciate how hard it is for new collectors but to be honest those of us who are old enough to remember life without the internet know that it was damn site harder in the old days than it is now and some of the newbies who always just post saying ‘have you got this and have you got that’ might like to remember that every now and then.
