It really is a sad day in radio.
It will take one hell of a presenter to fill Johns shoes.

It’s a very sad day in radio. I was on air when the news came through. We covered it within minutes of it being released.

John Peel is one of the guys who you expected to go on forever. Sadly that wasn’t the case. Not only have we lost a UK radio legend, we have also lost the finest broadcaster there ever was.

He was also the only member of the original Radio 1 line-up left at the station. There will be a tribute to him tonight at 11pm UK time on Radio 1.

UK Radio in general has lost one of its pioneers (be it as a brit correspondant for U.S. radio or the host of The Purfumed Garden on the Big L)

Liverpool (still recovering from Ken Bigley) has lost one of its best loved sons.

i heard the news on radio 1 on tuesday afternoon, we have lost a broadcasting legend, a great man, with a great sense of humour will be sadly missed, condolonces to his wife and children, john rest in peace

Last nights tribute was a bit of a rush job as I missed out one of his christian names.

It should’ve read John Robert Parker Ravenscroft and the fact that he was born in Heswall makes him from “The Other Side” as they say in Liverpool.

Although I was never a big fan of John Peel (The River Mersey does separate us), you had to admire him for giving airtime to artists who in the normal run of things would never be touched by the major record labels (They’re only interested in boy/girl bands with a shelf life of 1 year, if they’re lucky). And as previously said here the only lasting presenter from day 1 of R1. looking at it synically the savage cuts that Matthew Bannister made to R1 in the 90’s are now fully complete, maybe he feels proud of himself, job done—-move on, ( I’m not really bitter, aw shit yes I am). 😥

I was never a consistent listeners to his shows – I loved him but pretty much hated the music. Many times I tried listening at the top of the show only to be put off by something dreadfully tuneless about three songs in.

With a jingle slant on this I do vividly remember one programme start where he mentioned the fact that someone had written in complaining that he never played any jingles (probably a Mr Hemsley of Leeds) and that the show lacked something.

Peel promptly banged in three carts and fired off some of JAM’s best from 1987.
