Many thanks for posting the early Minster montage David. It certainly brought back some good memories for me from around 92/93 when I worked over in York. The Warren Moore years!

I did have a load of airchecks from this era but sadly they were ‘lost’ a couple of house moves back, so not heard some of those for a few years. Fab to hear ’em again!

Just a point regarding the jingle at :42 in the montage “Playing Favourites all weekend Long …M-M-Minster FM!” When I first heard the JAM Hot KIIS demo (about 4 years after the Minster cuts were first played on air) I realised that there was something strange about this one… it’s actually a hybrid jingle, starting off in Hot KIIS cut 6 and ending in Hot KIIS cut 1!

At one point I did think it was a ‘making use of the demo’ type cut, however I don’t think it is, as the demo is “All summer long” and the Minster cut went “All weekend Long”. Anyone know anything about this?

And what a fab strapline that “Yorkshire’s Capital Hits” strapline was too! Interestingly it went on air three weeks before a nearby station, Radio Aire, rebranded themselves as “Yorkshire’s Best Music Mix”, with JAM’s The Beat package. I was able to hear both loud and clear!

I have the launch of Minster somewhere….and the copy of it that’s in their archive is from… me – because they lost their own!

Give me the weekend and I’ll post it here…. :D

Memories indeed. Thanks, as ever, Mr Barras.

I was working in York in those days and in fact wrote an article about radio DJs based on a few hours spent with Dave Lee who became programme director there. We listened through a pile of awful audition tapes, then I wrote the article. It was sub-edited to become a bit more dismissive than I’d intended, but you might find it of historical interest. It’s downloadable here:

Whilst on the subject of hybrid jingles, especially with reference to Minster FM, do you remember this hybrid jingle from 1994? Until I got my hands on the full package many years later, I never realised that Minster FM had never had Stay Kool cut 13 officially sung as part of the 1994 JAM composite package.

Well I’d never noticed that one before Mark, thanks for pointing it out. It actually sounds like the body of cut 13 with the end of the weather tag sing (cut 15)? Perhaps they decided that the key of cut 13’s tag was wrong for “Minster FM”

On the subject of kool jingle hybrids… there’s always the famous Key103 Top Ten at Ten jingle (early 90s), with 2Kool cut 8 and a mystery ‘Key103’ accapella ending! Had an off air recording of this but can’t seem to find it now. Could never work out which legit jingle the Key103 tag came from.

Martin, for your information, and I should have mentioned it in my last post, the end Minster FM sing is from Stay Kool cut 1.

Still on the subject of Minster FM jingles, Stay Kool cut 13 was the weather jingle from the 1994 package which sang “Minster FM weather” on the intro. However, does anybody remember the “North Yorksire’s Weather” alternative intro sing? I think this must have been an add-on because it wasn’t on the 1994 package master – only the original version. If my memory serves me correct, the “North Yorkshire’s” weather version was used when they linked up with YCR.

This is the only Minster FM jingle I’m missing from my collection. :( Anybody have a copy?

Now you come to mention it Mark, the ending does sound like the end of Staykoo; cut 1, rather than the end of the cut 13 weather jingle.

I always liked the cut 13 “Minster FM Weather…. Minster FM” used from 1994 onward, sadly though I don’t remember the “North Yorkshire’s Weather” version, so can’t help you out there. Always remember the link ups having a John Wells (I think it was) voiceover “Minster FM and Yorkshire Coast Radio”.

Speaking of Minster FM weather jingles, I really liked the first weather bed they used back in 1992/93. It wasn’t a sung weather jingle as such, more a generic production bed with various voiceovers. I remember the same bed later being used used at times (’94/’95ish) on Radio Aire FM.

From conversations we’ve had in the past (Mark) I think it may be one of a set produced by Andrew White/De Wolfe in early 90s. Anyone remember it? Really upbeat, with a suburb ‘outro’ ending.

In fact… (knew I’d heard it more recently)… it’s the one we hear a snippet of in the catchy Hodgey JD3 sweepers, towards middle of montatge at http://www.jinglemad.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=892&title=JingleMad%20Jingle%20Day%202005%20Imaging%5Dtake%20a%20listen%20here

Interesting stuff Geoff. I actually remember meeting Mike Watson from KCBC (referred to in the article) when a mate of mine was doing swing work there. He was truly chuffed to get his first proper radio gig. Mind you, the only thing I remember about him was that he used to called Lionel Richie “Rich Tea” and crack a poor gag about him liking biscuits!
