The Galaxy Bristol TOTH (1990) came from TM’s Dallas Power which was the same one that was on air at Horizon Radio (1989).

The original Galaxy cut was sung in Worcester at Standard Sound, but it wasn’t exactly the best sing ever. If you’ve heard the cut, you’ll know what I mean. However I believe it was later resung in Dallas.

I think you are refering to the extended bed from Dallas Power Cut #17 made by TM Communications.

It was syndicated for Horizon Radio and Galaxy Radio, through Muff Murfin, whilst Chiltern Radio and Northants Radio used a 1989 composite including The Amazing FM & Synchronism. This was joined in 1990 by a Full Force resing for the AM split – Supergold.

The original Dallas Power resings for Galaxy Radio were sung in Worcester, though they were sung again in Dallas. By late 1991 the Chiltern Network went to JAM and had their legendary custom package for The Hot FM. Despite resings of this JAM package featuring the ‘Hotter Mix’ for (The All New) Horizon Radio, Galaxy (and come to think of it Horizon) still used their ‘Dallas Power’ top of the hour, this continued with the launch of the regional Galaxy 101 despite having a nice Alfasound/Jam custom package before the demise of the Chiltern Network.

Did 97.2 FM also have the awesome Paul McKenna voice overs or was Bristol home to Mr Van Dyke?

There does’nt seem to be any pre-101 audio clips around anywhere and I have heard on good authority that Galaxy Radio 97.2 was a really great soundin’ little station before it went regional.

It was also a far cry from the station it took over…FTP. I remember hearing FTP using a mixture of voices including the late Bill Mitchell. I seemed to remember they also had a nice sung jingle package as well. Its such a shame FTP was short lived, like many of the other IBA Incremental stations.

Galaxy used a few of the Charlie Van Dyke sweeps in its Hot FM days, including at one stage when part of a sweep was at the end of the Top of Hour sequence (Dallas Power Cut #17). What was really weird was that Galaxy still used a couple of FTP cuts, including an instrumental going into the local news bulletin in its early days.

I think when FTP became Galaxy, they used Paul Pheer’s voice….I could be wrong though, he used to present at Wiltshire Radio/GWR during the eighties. Plus there was an American V/O that was used across the whole Chiltern Network.

Galaxy wasn’t a bad station and didn’t resemble in anyway the later regional station and the Chrysalis version. Galaxy used to take network programming at differing times or joined up with Severn Sound. Maybe because the ‘Promise of Performance’ was different and involved a lot of black music/focused programming from the FTP days, which gradually changed to dance music.

Did it share Emma Scott’s Music Jam with Horizon, weekdays 12-2pm? and did Steve Power (networked) ever appear on it?

Was the TOTH tagged with “Bristol’s Weather….” or did they go for Avon or something like that. Horizon always used “Buckinghamshire’s Weather…” as opposed to just “Milton Keynes…

It was definately ‘Bristol’s weather’ or for a brief period ‘Bristol’s Weatherfax’ in line with the rest of the network. Or the jock voiced over the top when the weather had a sponsor credit.

I don’t think they ever mentioned Avon, GWR did for a while referring to part of their broadcast area as ‘Bristol & Avon’.

Was there ever any station only straplines or phrases on 97.2 – Horizon used to belt out stuff like “Milton Keynes Music Machine” and “Buckinghamshire’s Number One Hit Music Station”……

Was the 97.2 TOTH the Patrick Allen one about The Bristol Broadcasting Company……….

Am I right in my dates that The Hot FM brand was changed around 1992 to The Hotter Mix…. the same time The New GWR FM launched ‘The Better Music Mix’ strap….?
