I was pleasantly surprised to hear some newly sung JAM jingles on 98.1 W251BY/WPTY-HD2 in Long Island NY, which just started the process of rebranding from “Oldies 98” to “Big [Hits] 98.1”. The new jingles are resings of the WCBS-FM Do It Again package. (The previous jingles, which are still in use for the time being, came from JAM’s ’70s WABC and WLS packages.) Personal cuts still seem to be on hiatus, but it’s good to know they’re at least still doing jingles for terrestrial radio.

Great news!! They’re actually airing a “from this to this promo” showcasing the new rebranding and new jingles.

Here’s a story about it from yesterday: https://radioinsight.com/headlines/229600/big-rebranding-in-process-on-long-island/

As of right now, to my knowledge, there aren’t any recordings online.

Had a listen online (yes, NO geo-blocking!) to “The Wiseman” on breakfast.

Seemed to be just a few jingles, and highly repeat rate, especially his cut.
Could burn those out exceedingly quickly.

However the weather cut and the “Beep Beep Yeah” traffic (shades of BBC R1 in 1976) sounded fine.

I’ve noticed other stations have been rebranded to the same..Oldies 98.1 or Big 98.1
Listening to the former WOGL Philadelphia via VPN..to hear some jingles (Hopefully)

I, too got to listen online- if you liked the Oldies 98 Jingles (which weren’t bad), then these are basically the same “melody” (with the exception of “Big Hits” instead of “Oldies” as the “identifier”)–correct terminology ? I will say the audio stream was of a rather “murky” quality, but that’s an “audio” issue.

                      You mean this, right?
(Edit: There’s more than just one of these promos, so if I want to record all of them, it’s going to take a lot of effort, because these comes on after a legal ID and a short ad break.)

hope you have an Audio Program to “clean up” that “murky” audio…

Not really – the old ones were based on the WABC logo, while these new ones use the CBS-FM logo as heard in the Do It Again package (and based on the Drake “KHJ Los Angeles” melody).

As for WOGL’s “Big” name change… they weren’t using any jingles from what I’ve heard. They didn’t have any for the last few months of the “98.1 WOGL” branding either. Music is also different (newer) from what the Long Island station is playing.

Did anyone notice how W251BY/WPTY-HD2 is using an extended version of Positron #15?

I originally thought this was a special edit made by JAM, but I’m pretty sure someone at the station cut out the middle, shifted it up one semitone, and then spliced it all together. Very creative and rare to see these days.

Using a tag-only version from another station, I made the same edit and (poorly) tagged on the (over-processed) end of the on-air ‘Oldies 98’ version to demonstrate what I am talking about. In theory, you could make this loop go on forever if you wanted to…

I was talking about WOGL Philadelphia (now also “Big 98.1”), not the Long Island station we’re mainly discussing here, when I said I wasn’t hearing any jingles. WOGL hasn’t been “Oldies” for a long time – of course, when they were, one of the jingle packages they used is the same one that Long Island’s “Big” is using now. And when they were just branding by the call letters, they used some of the same cuts that Long Island’s “Oldies 98” had/has.

I have heard some of the “extended” versions of Positron jingles – they certainly get points for creativity there. Not sure how well I think they work, but that might just be because I’m so used to the jingles as they normally are. Funny enough, this reminds me of how on one of Jon’s recent shows, he revealed that some of the first WLS jingles (Class Action and Pro/Mod packages) had previously unheard instrumental jams (no pun intended) leading up to what you hear on the demo.
