acording to radioinsight, instead of a spinoff, CBS Radio will merge with Entercomm. if this should happen, what will be your take on things to come on the jingle front? My thoughts: Entercomm has been a company that for the most part, likes to expand their verrying stations that use jingles, and use a range of companies. So, i’d see a station like KRTH or KOOL-FM expand to different companies. Who knows, KRTH may decide to get with TM, or KOOL maybe, just maybe they get back with Jam. only time will tell

Lawrence, all of CBS’s TV stations won’t be touched, this is only CBS’s radio division.

Well, the MSU market already got a new ownership company a few months ago, as Beasley took over the Greater Media stations. And Entercom will have nothing to do with CBS TV – essentially, CBS is getting out of the radio business.

My hunch is that there won’t be any sweeping changes at the Classic Hits stations as a result of this merger, unless they decide to release Jim Ryan from his format VP position. By the way, last I listened, KOOL wasn’t using any jingles at all. And KRTH is using sung jingles again, but I have no idea who produced them. It definitely isn’t Johnny Mann, and I don’t think it’s any of the major radio jingle players.

There will be cuts in each market and talented people will be shown the door.
In situations like this there are always job losses.

“Why would CBS Radio get purchased by Entercom?”

The owners of CBS want rid of the radio division.

So its one of these “financial devices” to allow a backwards merger/sell-off to be done in a way that
doesn’t (*cough*) necessitate bucketloads of tax having to be paid on the transferring of the assets.

For a deeper discussion of all that…
                http://www.musicradio77.com/wwwboard/messages/433753.html

As for the effects on Jingle-land – equivalents of the phrase “Every City has a (insert ‘KISS’ etc etc)”
will become even more prevalent with one package for every station in the same genre, with just
the generic “brand” name on 7 of the cuts and issued to every station regardless of the actual
call-letters, and only the TOH slightly changed with the CoL sing (if it all – just v/o the frequency
and market name?). (How many ways can even TM sing just 3 syllables as in that (excellent) video
                posted the other day?)

More and more bland “corporate” radio, more and more identikit jingles that all sound the same
as each competitor producer and as competitor stations. And UK etc stations/producers will
continue to further “ape” the States.

However, on the other hand, at least here on the east coast of Scotland, I can pick up a few
                Continental stations at night – with decent & lyric’d jingles too e.g. “#Vee-los-it-ayy”# :^)

Yup, this means that the original “Big 3” radio networks will now all be out of the radio business, at least as far as station ownership goes.

                      ok, one cant remember everything, and time takes its toll….however;
i seem to remember something called ‘viacom’ many many moons ago that held a cluster of radio stations. viacom, without reason as far as i could see, dumped, unloaded all the radio stations, wnd the new birth became entercom.
again. i could be off base here, but my memory seems to recall this happening.
viacom did not return to radio until the infinity, westinghouse deal was put together.
viacom then split the new creation to its own division, cbs.

so. if my recall is correct, viacom has a history of dumping radio. how smart is it?
not very……but, if they want out? they want out. as for entercom?
grrrrr….a real bad operation. i cant think of any market they “improved” anything in.
blood sucking money maggggggots. at entercom, there is no talent they care to keep.
ask howie carr at his new syndicated network.

Viacom and Entercom had no connection prior to this. Viacom was in the radio business (albeit not a major player) before the CBS merger, and didn’t get out of it until after the split.

actually, if you go back to the 70’s, youll be surprised to see that viacom was dumping radio and entercom was the dumpee. viacom units found their way under the crack entercom management skills…..
and yes. as i said 70’s. the westinghouse deal was much later. ‘uncle mel’ put that together, and what ‘split’? viacom still controls cbs. redstones kid had plans of doing away with cbs several months ago and calling it all viacom (again), but she seems to have gotten some friction over her plan.

I was just gonna say something about that. seems WJMK as k-hits may be moving to HD2, as the merger starts taking shape, we’ve had 4 flips and a frequency swap. KVIL and WBMP is now alternative, WJMK is classic hiphop, KSWD flipped to K-Love as they got sold to EMF, but who knows. I hope Entercomm may make a playlist tweek of some sort, cause they do have an actual oldies station in the Denver market.

Figured I’ll continue this discussion in the more relevant thread. Yes, K-Hits is gone in favor of classic hip-hop “104.3 Jams” (no connection to JAM or PAMS ) – wasn’t expecting that but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. WLS-FM will likely see a ratings bump now, but hopefully Jeffro and other K-Hits jocks find new gigs. Seems like Entercom would rather have a niche format all to themselves than play second banana in a more mainstream format, with WBMP and KVIL going from CHR to Alternative being other examples. I’m all for this approach personally, but again, hopefully those who lost jobs will land on their feet.

Will be interesting to see what happens in Boston too. Entercom traded with Beasley, giving up The Sports Hub in exchange for Magic 106.7, right in time for the latter station to go all-Christmas. And as I previously mentioned, WODS-HD2 stopped using the call letters in its branding in favor of resurrecting “Oldies 103.3”, which may hint at something being up with the main channel. I did read from some sources that *something* (other than what we already know) was changing in Boston, so it will be interesting to see what plays out.

Jim Ryan will be the Classic Hits format captain at the new company, so I wouldn’t expect much to change at the remaining former CBS Classic Hits stations. This does bring another station using JAM into the cluster, however – 94.9 WOLX in Madison, Wisconsin. They just got their Breakthrough resings earlier this year, and the Reelworld K-Hits package is already being used on iHeartMedia competitor Rewind 92.1 (WXXM), so JAM might be safe for a while.
