May 26, 2015 at 10:28 am #97824scotronMemberAuthorFollowing on from Geoff Barton’s blog of his visit to Jam last year, he was lucky enough to receive his very own jingle from Jon. It was from a very rare PAMS package called Beautiful But Beautiful and Geoff described the track as ‘bewitching’. It certainly was and prompted me to eventually have my own version of the cut. I sent Geoff a preview last night, but here it for all JMers to enjoy. Love that saxaphone.
May 26, 2015 at 11:26 am #97825IainJohnstonImpressed Ron!
A 40-year-plus-old cut yet a fresh spine-tingling sound – and is that “WNBC/WIBC/etc” Heller-like logo from that era on the
original KPOL or did Jon do that “by request”?Many of us “mature collectors” know that there is a HUGE amount of classic PAMS NON-Series & Customs, especially circa
1969 through to say 1974 when PAMS could still create memorable material, that I know would provide a mine of distinctive
Personal Cuts if the tracks were “available”.Jon lists PAMS non-numbered-series etc on the website, but not what might be sing-able via JAM Personal Cuts.
Clearly it would not be practical/economical for Jon to restore & digitize analogue multi-tracks or derivatives of them, and
re-score/recreate the vocal charts just for a first-time single cut/small order Personal Cut(s) session……but I wonder if he would be willing to publicize / list what classic PAMS non-Series packages he may ALREADY have
transferred “into digital domain” in full or partly for whatever broadcast clients or others to date, that COULD be re-sung
as Personal Cuts?IJ
May 26, 2015 at 11:37 am #97827RobinBlamiresI was considering one of the tracks from “Naturally” as a future purchase. (And possibly my first ever PAMS purchase). I’m pretty certain Ratnob has had one resung from that set.
May 26, 2015 at 11:58 am #97828PKMemberWasn’t there a cut from Naturally sung for BBC Radio One?
Radio 1 particularly in the 70s had many great Non-Numberered series custom cuts from PAMS.
Along the way i’ve also seen people show interest in resings of many custom cuts JAM recorded that were never officialy in any packages or were one offs as well.
A good thread to show interest in what can often be otherwise forgotten or overlooked jingles.
May 26, 2015 at 12:18 pm #97829IainJohnstonMemberI’ve posted montages on JM on a number of occasions of PAMS Radio 1 (and 2) material from the various non-Series & customs from
the 1972-to-1974 era. I’d probably have to transfer them to S/c instead of them sitting on 4S.“Naturally” cuts appeared on R1, as did Great American Music Machine (maybe not quite correct title?), Clyde/Grabber, and all sorts of stuff.
R2 had the excellent KRLD Dallas 1970 custom, the KULF Houston (10-track in use), and even Smart Set in stereo.
Its also worth remembering that a lot of 1969-1974 era PAMS material had that “rejuvenated” and very tight new rhtym section
sound plus a no-more-Big-Band-era and funkier brass sound and solid strings, that was very different from the direction that
the (then “true Meriman”) TM sound was going in.Worth also noting that many non-Series PAMS cuts at that time seemed to be “re-scores” or “re-trackings” (10-track again?)
of ones from other clients’ “custom”s, with “similar sounding” bars (especially in long instrumental pads) yet “slightly different”.The sheer variety & number of PAMS non-Series cuts at that time was mind-boggling (…dare I compare with a very recent
UK-based station that was cheerfully trumpeting how happy they were its new “custom” that comprised (just) FOUR yes, 4) cuts!?!?)May 26, 2015 at 12:24 pm #97830IainJohnstonHaving just found that my OLD JM handle is still “alive” after all, I can now “swap posts with myself”… :^)
Anyway – should we create a completely fresh Topic PURELY for discussing classic PAMS Non-series / custom packages
/ individual cuts that we would much appreciate JMW being able to “make available” as Personal Cuts some day, rather
than us stealing Ron’s thunder from his new cut !!!May 26, 2015 at 12:52 pm #97831GrahamCollinsWhat I am only just discovering is how many PAMS Numbered Series (from 15-34) cuts were used on Radio 1 from launch that were not part of any officially bought package! PAMS apparently gave permission for the BBC to use generic edits from standard demo tapes that were sent out. Mr Blackburn in particular was a prolific user of ‘non Radio 1’ PAMS classics, often with his personal UK sung cut just bolted on.
May 26, 2015 at 1:08 pm #97832PKMemberthe (then “true Meriman”) The sheer variety & number of PAMS non-Series cuts at that time was mind-boggling (…dare I compare with a very recent

Trouble is everytime I hear them playing a jingle (as nice as it is), it sounds like exactly the same cut used out of every ad break as though they’ve only had one cut done or only using one (of the four lol!) on air which sounds more repetative than their music playlist tee hee!
May 26, 2015 at 1:45 pm #97833IainJohnstonGraham, I’ve only ever heard one or two such R1 edits – I think – on KenR CD, can’t quite remember what aired
as I was a wee bit younger than I am today back in 1967!Considering how vast the 1967 PAMS composite for Radio One was (and technically for Radio TWO for the many
“shared hours”…) you’d think there wasn’t the slightest need to “chop up” even more! And it was only a 12-month licence.PK – clearly radio is heading back to 1971/2 and legendary KCBQ San Diego’s “single cut jingle package” of ONE main cut
(without any acapella tags either) from TM’s Phase II ! (…which I have here on a tape from the station…)Mind you, by the time most of today’s US and UK stations have got through a mind-numbing 10-12 item long break
(stop set for USA JMers) lasting longer than nearly TWO “records”, there’s likely no-one left to hear the jingle as they’ll
have re-tuned elsewhere to some other station, ready to then “hop” again once that next station starts yet another
10-12 item ….. ad nauseaum…May 26, 2015 at 2:20 pm #97834PKMemberIf only that single solitary jingle played was that KCBQ cut it’d sound much better, faster and tighter lol! WDJO 1480 in Cincinnati use that cut out of their Top Of The Hour Weather bulletins.
Smoth Radio, Heart, possible Capital and even on occasions Planet Rock all guilty of 5 minute commercial breaks up to the news bulletin at least 3 minutes of news and weather!
In the offshore radio days that would have been at least 3 records! They battled to banish the Musicians Union needletime restrictions for so many years, now so many of our music stations have so much waffle and long commercial breaks it often seems like more music might have been played when needletime was in place…….
June 5, 2015 at 11:29 pm #97892LenGroatHi Ron – sorry I’m the last to compliment you on this great re-sing – I forgot to comment when I first heard it – it’s good to see you and others exploring ‘other’ PAMS packages!
June 6, 2015 at 2:50 pm #97899martinlesterMemberHi Scott
Only Just got round to listing to this cut as can’t play embedded on Ipad but very nice Vocal’s sounds good
do you know what station this was originally sung for ?
June 6, 2015 at 3:56 pm #97900IainJohnstonAs Len says … “explore other PAMS packages”…”
I’d hoped JMW might have seen my “prompt” above about what or what not of rarer PAMS tracks/non-series items might be “available” in the digital domain, but I do appreciate it that he has enough on his plate as it is!
Martin – “wrong end of name “!
The OP is RON not SCOTT :^)June 6, 2015 at 7:50 pm #97901martinlesterMemberAs Len says … “explore other PAMS packages”…”
