Our new ‘spring’ package is gradually appearing on air and I hope ‘Jinglemadders’ will enjoy hearing the choices we made from packages as old as 1972 and as ‘recent’ as 1994! It’s mainly JAM, a sprinkling of PAMS, and thanks to Sean and iJingles we will have a new station song. We now focus musically on the years 1958 to 1982, which to me were the GREAT years for ‘Top 40 Radio’ and the jingles that were such a key part of it. Just mixing the two together a lot of the ‘work’ is done in re-creating that classic radio style.
To kick off I was very indulgent and chose a cut from PAMS Philadelphia Story which I ordered originally in 1974 as part of the first PAMS package used on ILR in Great Britain for Metro Radio. Now fittingly 40 years later I’ve had ‘City Line Avenue’ re-sung for Solid Gold GEM AM. I LOVED the Philadelphia Story package – to me PAMS at its 70s peak. The original vocal parts have been re-created and sung by the singers at JAM Creative Productions and recorded and mixed by Jon.
Here is the 1974 sing and the 2015 one!
February 9, 2015 at 12:11 pm #97061mbMemberWould it not be better to keep all the Solid Gold GEM AM conversations in one thread?
There are already several that this could have appended.
Maybe its time to revisit the structure and have a section for specific ongoing threads / companies / stations.February 9, 2015 at 12:27 pm #97062AdminYes Len was requested to keep everything in one place. The software doesn’t support merging of threads at the moment but we’ll see if we can do something to join them together.
February 9, 2015 at 1:02 pm #96016LenGroatI thought it was clear by calling it ‘2015’ that the thread was designed for a whole YEAR ? I did this BECAUSE I’d been asked ‘to keep everything in one place’
MB & Admin – did you like the jingles ?
February 9, 2015 at 1:27 pm #97064GrahamCollinsMerging all SGGAM threads would be good as this would continually keep it near the top of the leader board, as it is one of the few places where new/old jingles are championed and Dallas sound aficionados can get their fix.
I like Len’s reworking of an old classic and there’s much more on the way.
Please stand by…..
February 9, 2015 at 2:42 pm #97065mbMemberYes – always liked the PAMS Metro stuff – It was the first collectors package I ever bough the tape of from PAMS UK ( B&L )
I actually like a lot more of the 70s PAMS stuff Like Clyde, Shaft, etc than the 60’s stuff but maybe its an age thing
When choosing a cut for my Northern soul Show I thought about thrse packages but went for Do It Again Cut 10 but I love the SOUL POWER package from PAMS. ( although not sure the cuts with all these mentions of brothers are quite appropriate so relyricing is essential.
THe Metro / Orwell PAMS material still sounds big and Awesome.February 9, 2015 at 6:55 pm #97066radio_blokeMemberGreat jingle Len. I should have added that to my order before the door closed.
February 9, 2015 at 7:44 pm #97067radio_blokeMemberdoh!
I just realised that came from a door that’s not closedFebruary 9, 2015 at 8:29 pm #97068JohnLLen… Another great choice. I was always partial to the ‘Philly Sound’ package and had a couple of tracks from it resung by KEN R about a million years ago… and yes, we still use them! The JAM vocalist and the KEN R singers sounded pretty ‘close’ to each other, so I edited our version of the City Sound track into the end of yours to see if the experts here agree. The file below presents our original, followed by the edit… heard only here at Jingle Mad!

February 10, 2015 at 8:26 am #97070LenGroatThanks for the comments!
MB: do add the Orwell version of ‘City Line Avenue’, always interesting to hear comparisons.
John L: your comparison of the vocals is an interesting one – and both in stereo which I guess the original WFIL never was – 56 AM?
Here’s the next new cut – JAM ‘Warp Factor’ No.9 ! In fact it’s a ‘straggler’ from our last 2014 mini-package. The separate mix of the front is VERY usable with a multitude of other station jingles to follow – and the cut is a great slow to fast transition.
February 10, 2015 at 5:38 pm #97075UKJinglesMemberTalking about Orwell…You might be able to answer this one Len!
Didn’t Orwell get into trouble with the MU over their PAMS Cuts (Metro Didn’t?) and had to have them re-sung with English Singers (Emison?)Pete
February 10, 2015 at 5:49 pm #97076JohnLBest Recalled around these parts as ‘Serving The Universe’ on Z100… can’t go wrong with Warp Factor! Another great choice Len!
February 10, 2015 at 9:34 pm #97079SpoonsLoving these – especially Warp Factor #9
February 10, 2015 at 11:04 pm #97080mbMemberHere’s Orwell’s version

February 11, 2015 at 1:43 am #97089michiMemberI recently did something similar with J1’s Channel 4 Hot AC cuts.. mashed them up with the Channel 4 cuts done for Classic Hits WKQK Memphis. Embedded at home.recnet.com/soundcloud
February 11, 2015 at 7:46 am #97083martinlesterMemberThanks for posting Len
The new PAMS cut sounds better than your metro original
And never heard the Warp Factor re mix before sounds good
February 11, 2015 at 3:06 pm #97087LenGroatThank for the comments – the Orwell version MB – and Pete:
“Didn’t Orwell get into trouble with the MU over their PAMS Cuts (Metro Didn’t?) and had to have them re-sung with English Singers (Emison?)”
Well the IBA was very heavy-handed as we all know – under gov’t guidance they only allowed 19 stations to start with. Even before ILR was launched they’d made a deal with the MU that UK musicians had to feature on radio jingles. I had no idea of this when I ordered the PAMS for Metro in October 1974 and from order to delivery it was just 2 weeks – we’d been quoted 8 weeks by Emision which was one reason I was able to persuade the bosses at Metro to use PAMS !
Orwell got its PAMS in 1975 as John Wellington moved there from doing comm prod at Metro – he basically ordered a very similar cut selection.
The IBA finally became aware of the PAMS jingles in 1976 and pressure was bought to bear – but I left Metro in 1976 so never had to use the UK replacements thank goodness! In my opinion the PAMS jingles were a key part of turning Metro’s fortunes around as it suddenly sounded VERY together!
February 17, 2015 at 1:16 pm #97191LenGroatAs promised ‘more of what we are here for’ – jingle sings and re-sings – in this case a cut from JAM’s ‘First of All’ created for KDKA originally. This is the version for our breakfast show.
https://soundcloud.com/len-groat/paul-burbank-breakfast-show-jingle
Obviously it gives a great shorter mix from the ‘reveille’ !
To my ears this is a classic JAM package which blends well with cuts from the various JAM packages such as the WCBS FM, KOST packages, ‘Omni tracks’ and so on.
We also did a version for our ‘Early Show’ with a certain Graham Collins!
February 17, 2015 at 4:28 pm #97193ratnobMemberGreat jingle choices, as ever, Len – and produced to perfection. That ‘Philadelphia Story’ TOH cut has been on my wish-list for a while.
The most unusual version of it I know was featured on a Jon Wolfert jingle sampler for WNDR, Syracuse:

February 26, 2015 at 11:13 pm #97302LenGroatThe ‘jingle download fairy’ left something nice under my pillow last night. Our January order with JAM grew and grew (like Pinnochio’s nose) as some of our dj’s decided they’d like some cuts as well. But for the station we turned to a short sharp perfect cut Jinglemadders will spot instantly. As the JAM demo page says:
“The energetic feeling of ’70s top-40 radio is captured in LogoSet, which JAM created for WABC New York in 1976. It has been heard around the world on over 150 stations, and is still part of classic hits stations today!”
Make that 151 !
February 27, 2015 at 9:59 am #97305gameswizardMemberThat’s a great cut, Len. I really love the drum intro on it too.
I like the way that vocal(?) effect builds – that’s what is sounds like to me anyway – before “Solid” is sung. ’tis very good indeed.
February 28, 2015 at 11:51 am #97318radio_blokeMemberExcellent re-sing!
I think the vocal trick sounds like reverse echo and or reverbFebruary 28, 2015 at 1:26 pm #97325IainJohnstonUsed to do that “trick” over 40 years ago on a Ferro Series 7… far too “easy” with all this new-fangled Babbage-Engine Stuff!
February 28, 2015 at 2:08 pm #97327LenGroatThe LogoSet cut is now on-air – but you heard it here first! I love the vocal fluidity of the end acap, where “sev-en-t-sev-en” is “we-love-the-old-ies”.. GREAT job by Jon and the singers.
Okay – for a change no details – no package name + a very different lyric on a cut done for one of our dj’s who has quickly gone from starting his dj ‘life’ to being jingle lover/buyer in a year!
