Sometimes for technical reasons, not every JMer can get their audio to post directly.

So on behalf of Glen, here’s some classic jingles from his collection,
for WSAZ 930 kHz Huntington West Virgina.

Love it. Kintel’s Lively Ones… originally syndicated for WGR in the mid sixties.

Thanks for the info TC – Glen wasn’t able to throw me any “background” on these to add to the audio post, so that “fills the gaps” for at least two of us!

Thought – these sounded vaguely familiar in style to something I heard many (…many!…) years ago – “Light & Lively WCOP” (Baltimore?). Would that be something from the same “stable” possibly?

By utter coincidence, I came across this reference this evening to a “Lively Ones” package …

“When Keener 13 first signed on, they used jingles produced by Dallas companies Richard H. Ullman, CRC (Commercial Recording Corporation) and Jodie Lyons. The latter created a package called “The Lively Ones.” All these jingles received a lot of airplay. Perhaps the station was unable to obtain jingles from PAMS of Dallas, the leading producer, because that company had an arrangement with ABC-owned competitor WXYZ until about 1965”

The text is by Ken R no less, discussing the history of WKNR Detroit (today better known as WNIC) at

The Jodie Lyons’ Lively Ones was a totally different package, sounding very much like PAMS 27 in many ways. Bill Meeks wrote a check to Jodie for the package, just to take it out of circulation.

Kintel’s Lively One’s were totally different with vocals sung in Atlanta by the late Rod Kinder and his ex-wife Majie (spelling may be wrong). As I recall, even Pepper had a package entitled “21 Lively Ones” so it’s easy to get confused without hearing the materials.

                    Thank you TC :)
Strange to hear the once-upon-a-time very “hip” WKNR with such “big band” sounding “swingin’ ” jingles (as KenR would call ’em)!

Historical stuff: Somewhere in the blurb I read, it suggested PAMS Series 32 was really written for WKNR in mind rather than the “usual 60 cuts per year quota for WABC whether they used them or not…). Might explain why the “Keener 13” air versions of PAMS 32 sound just a bit funkier vocally than many a re-sing of it (…and people know what I used to think years ago when “yet another PAMS 32 tape” thudded on to my doormat!) :-D

Wow TC, now I finally know where the second track of the ‘Lively One’ WKNR montage you posted came from.

I recall getting that track, along with the usual load of other rare and odd items on a cassette from Ken R 25 plus years ago, and instantly dubbing it as a ‘PAMS-ALIKE’ cut… bold, brassy, just a great bed to talk up.

Back in our original pirate radio incarnation, I used a version of that track from a package where the top sing was ‘Community Billboard Is Now On The Air’ and, er, ‘adapted’ it with some overdubs for use on Radio NewYork International. I still crack it out once or twice a year, unafraid to show how shoddy our presentation was back in our younger days, when the ‘RNI Singers’ ruined many a classic cut (before we purchased the hundred or so PAMS tracks we have used, edited, re-edited, and otherwise messed with since).

I’ve always wanted that track sung up correctly. Is any jingle production house in possession of that bed, and licensed to sell that track. If so, I’d have to steal from the retirement funds to secure that one. One of the great ‘lost’ PAMS tracks that was not made by PAMS. No wonder Mr. Meeks cut JL a check! Thanks for the post, even the ‘swishy’ MP3 is better than my noisy ol’ dub.

Given the lineage of the cut, the rights would squarely fall within the PAMS inventory of packages. The better question would be if the tracks still exist and have been transferred into the digital domain, which only Jon could answer.

Oh… and I didn’t know that my version sounded swishy?!

Thanks for your reply TC. If I ever free up the funds for the cuts I continue to ‘intend’ to purchase from JAM, I shall inquire of Jon about that track.

I have no doubt that your copy of said track sounds fine, but when reduced to what sounds to my aged ears like a 128 KB MP3 file (I believe that is the Soundcloud standard), the cymbals display that, for lack of a better word, ‘swishy’ sound. Otherwise, the sound is actually overall superior to my dub.

Although my cassette copy of that track is noisy as it is down more than a few generations from the master, it does not display that particular characteristic on the high end. I do believe you once pointed out in a posting here, (apologies if it was not your posting), how easy it is to discern a bad MP3 file from a WAV or lossless copy of a jingle, and how traders should strive to always source the best quality copy of material they have.

Of course when posting for quick downloads or using a Soundcloud type service, that is often not possible, or it may be size or bandwidth prohibitive. Whenever possible, when I share any thing from my modest collection, I post it to my website on my server, where I suffer no restrictions, and can post the best sounding files I can find.

Nonetheless, thanks once more for the post, that musical bed is too good to go unheard, no less unsold… assuming it still exist!

You are correct in that I compared sharing files in .mp3 format to making a photo copy of The Mona Lisa. The ONLY place that I listen to compressed files is in the car where my player won’t play .wav files.

Some more on behalf of Glen…

(RW and WB etc fans are strongly advised to go away and have a cup of tea or whatever while this short audio from possibly 1959 is playing… :-D )
