The audio speaks for itself ~ the fourth of my recent ‘mini-package’….
Broke all my ‘rules’ by buying something short with few mix-outs, but hey.. it was from a GREAT year, I loved hearing Tony Blackburn playing it then ~ and it still S O A R S out of the speakers now!
Thanks to Jon and his vocal team for an authentic recreation….. it will be on http://www.solidgoldgem.am from September
August 9, 2013 at 7:48 pm #91282IainJohnstonLen – while rummaging through “another place” this evening – found a link to this video – anyone recognisable in there???
August 9, 2013 at 8:05 pm #91283Good Time OldieVery nice indeed, great job – oh the memories.
I can just hear the edits now…It’s great good morning…good afternoon
There must be quite a few Len Groats about if you have to keep letting people know you’re the “original”, I have the same problem
August 9, 2013 at 9:25 pm #91284UKJinglesMemberWhat an excellent little Video…..Who did those Jingles…Emison?
I like them and I have never heard them before!
Getting back to the thread topic…Great cut Len (my favourite of all your 21st century one’s so far…..)
So when are you going to have the “You’ve Got It” Song re-sung??Pete
August 9, 2013 at 10:12 pm #91285BigdaveThat’s the Trent Magic package,Pete…its a lovely set of cuts. Let me know if you’d like a copy – it’s on the hard disc here at home.I’ll try and post a montage of it on here over the weekend.
If my memory serves me right,I think it was another Johnny Arthey production done at Wembley. The main female lead was Stephanie De Sykes, the woman born with a smile on her face
Whilst you’re waiting, have a quick read of this lovely piece by another great Trent-setter, David Lloyd. There’s some links to some really nice audio and a great video called the Castle Gate Years too…
August 9, 2013 at 10:37 pm #91286UKJinglesMemberThat would be great Dave…Thanks!
Side tracking again…….Its amazing how back in the “Good Old Days” of ILR (and BBC Local) the diversity of the Jingle packages and the people who produced them!
(Capital, Trent, Piccadilly, Beacon, Devonair and the many others didn’t just go to the same few companies for their jingles!)August 10, 2013 at 11:59 am #91289LenGroatIain : that video is too much nostalgia….. ‘anyone recognisable in there?’ Yes they were all work colleagues! Announcer is our PC (briefly 78-79) Bev Smith brought in from ATV when Neil (Dave Dennis Big L) Spence left, dj’s include (of course) Dale, I’m in the red shirt, Guy Morris (later BRMB/ Victory) chats with me briefly, lady with ginger hair is Trish Foster on lunch time phone-in, John Peters (nearly always on breakfast ’75 to ’88) on the OB, MD Dennis Maitland (’75- ’80 former Big L salesman) moustached newsreader is David Foster (now on AlJazeera) commercial producer Alan Bailey (previously at 208 for years) and many others… The video is from after the ‘Bob Snyder years’ 75-April ’77, and before Ron Coles joined as MD in 1980, and pre-the Alfasound/JAM jingle packages.
Big Dave: We called it the ‘All You Need’ package, and it was meant to sound like Abba : I wrote the lyrics, it was produced by Johnny Arthey (he conducted and arranged for Mary Hopkin and Clodagh Rodgers in the 1970 and 1971 Euro song contests + produced Eloise for Barry Ryan)
The reason the vocals were (a little) better than the previous Trent packages were that I was ‘allowed’ to go to the sessions (Dennis Maitland’s domain) and ‘putting my head above the parapet’ managed to persuade everyone to get the 5 part vocal group to LAYER (stack) the vocals (but only two layers) This was STRICTLY against the ridiculous MU ‘laws’ at the time, the singers should have been paid double! But as we used them very year they agreed – though in my mind they still sound limp. Main fault with the package was that none of the cuts had INTROS , they all came in on vocals I recall (?) so did not work well out of songs… Thank goodness Alfa and JAM came along…. In fact at the time of the video I was briefly on drive before going back on mornings, and I had JUST (privately) bought my FIRST JAM cut which was another one from ‘Best Country’ – pity it’s not on the video!
Ironically, the video is from a new site whih opens soon, run by by Tim Disney who I took on in the later 1980s as a dj on Trent! http://www.findaclip.com
Now what was this topic about? Oh yes, the JAM ‘Best County ‘ cut.
GTO : “There must be quite a few Len Groats about if you have to keep letting people know you’re the “original”
I use that as it gives the singers an ‘L’ end to lead into my name + I get more ‘notes’ ~ just ‘Len Groat’ with just 2 syllables and ‘t’ end would be weak on this cut!

Excellent Thanks Dave…..Alf didn’t produce many Jingle Packages did he?
There was so much Jingle variety back in the 1970’s on both ILR and BBC Local……
Now look at it! ( -
